Experienced and talented OL with two potential All-Americans. Also returning nearly the entire backfield and a young, but improving WR core. Top it off with our best TE on the roster back in the fold and a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Brandon Wimbush couldn't ask for much more in his first year as starter. This is all very good news, and promising for next year.
Since going 6-12 in its first ACC run, Notre Dame is 30-11. Duke is 28-13. Louisville is 27-14. North Carolina is 29-12. Only Virginia (32-9) has been better.
TV: Spoiler Irish247 insider Tom Loy and 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong bring you the latest they’re hearing regarding Notre Dame’s efforts on the recruiting trail. — The Irish are sitting on 15 commits and the nation’s No. 12 class with Feb. 1 and National Signing Day fast approaching. Here is a rundown on where things stand with each remaining name on the board. The highest-rated guy on the board is Top247 receiver Oliver Martin, who 247Sports ranks as the No. 11 receiver and No. 70 prospect overall. Martin will also be moving up later this week in 247Sports’s final Top247 for the 2017 class. A source close to the family told us last week that Notre Dame was out in front as they battle Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa, with schools like Auburn, Florida and Ohio State looking to make a late push. Sources around The Gug also feel good about where they stand with the U.S. Army All-American. Martin took December officials to ND and Iowa and was at Michigan State this past weekend. One source believes he could be done taking trips while a family source says they’re still ironing out the remaining two trips. No exact decision date is in place for Martin. He was one of the first prospects ND went and saw last Thursday and Brian Kelly is expected in home later this week. — Fort Wayne (Ind.) Snider receiver Mac Hippenhammer returns to the Notre Dame campus Monday for the first time since being offered. The Penn State commit now has the offer he always wanted in ND, but is it too late? Hippenhammer made it to Penn State a couple times this fall and has a great bond with his recruiter and potential position coach in Josh Gattis. It won’t be easy to say no to a place he’s grown to love. Regarding Notre Dame, Hippenhammer is obviously still interested or he wouldn’t be visiting. This will be his first opportunity to sit down with new offensive coordinator Chip Long. Today is an opportunity for Notre Dame to show Hippenhammer they want him in the class. Hippenhammer will official to Penn State this weekend and likely does the same with ND the final weekend of January. While we don’t have a Crystal Ball pick in for ND yet, we do think that things could develop quickly, so much so if ND crushes it today it wouldn’t be surprising if he didn’t take those officials later. We’ll see what kind of vibe Hippenhammer gets following the trip. Hippenhammer’s parents are expected to join him on Monday's trip. — Mission (Kan.) Bishop Miege four-star receiver Jafar Armstrong has seen his stock rise late on the trail as Baylor and Notre Dame are among the recent offers for the Mizzou commit. New offensive coordinator Chip Long is working hard here. We’ve been told that Armstrong is considering officials to Baylor this weekend and Notre Dame next weekend. If the Irish get Armstrong on campus, they’ll have a legit shot and he was excited about the opportunity. Armstrong’s quarterback Carter Putz is committed to Notre Dame for baseball. Armstrong has 45 touchdown receptions on the prep level with 36 coming from Putz the last two seasons. — Notre Dame is getting the last official visit of the process this weekend from Oklahoma City (Okla.) Midwest City Evan Fields. Irish assistant Mike Elston spent a lot of time with Fields and his family last week when he was in-home and he’s excited to get to South Bend and see what ND is all about. Arizona State was the leader going into this past weekend’s visit to UCLA. Notre Dame could be a game-changer. Fields fits from a personality standpoint. We’ll see how he takes to new defensive coordinator Mike Elko and Todd Lyght when he’s in this weekend. Fields and Lyght have been building a rapport in addition to Elston’s work here. We are close to picking ND for Fields, just want to see how things develop this weekend. — Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside cornerback Tre Norwood takes his official to Notre Dame this weekend. Both Loy and Wiltfong have him forecasted to ND on the Crystal Ball. Unless Norwood decides to slow things down and take an Oklahoma visit, as the Sooners offered last night, we think there’s a good chance he commits to the Irish while in town. There’s a lot of confidence around The Gug about where ND stands as Norwood has a good relationship with Elko and Lyght. This is one where Irish sources have felt good for awhile. Norwood recently decommitted from Louisville. — We think Stanford is in the driver’s seat for four-star athlete Connor Wedington, but he’s slated to check out ND the weekend of Jan. 27 and we’ll see what happens. — Sources tell us Tennessee cornerback commit Terrell Bailey will shut down his recruitment. We don't believe Notre Dame will pursue him any further and don't expect him to visit. — Cal safety commit Jordan Genmark-Heath recently told us he’s not sure what’s happening at Cal. However, he's expected to visit this weekend Notre Dame this weekend. The Irish could pull off a flip here. — Colorado athlete commit Chris Miller will visit this weekend. The Irish staff had the Lone Star State prospect on the radar dating back to the fall and confidence at that time was high they could flip him. He wants to play defensive back, but Notre Dame will likely make room for him regardless of what position works out. We’ll see how it goes this weekend. — Notre Dame offered Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy running back Deon Jackson late last week and we’re told a visit with his parents is highly likely. With that being said his mother told our Duke affiliate that they’ve seen it all and don’t need to get back to South Bend where they were in for Irish Invasion. Loy still thinks Jackson will visit, as do coaches at Pace Academy. — Vero Beach (Fla.) High receiver Michael Smith could be close to committing to Pitt and may not ever visit Notre Dame. At this point, we don't expect him to visit this weekend. — Notre Dame feels good that defensive end Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa will visit the final weekend of January, as they battle USC among others. Brian Polian has already been out to see him. — David Adams, Kurt Hinish and Drew White will be on campus this weekend for their official visit as well, as they’ll help recruit along with the early enrollees Aaron Banks, Robert Hainsey, CJ Holmes, Isaiah Robertson and Brock Wright.
This is gonna be a weak close- they need those DB's and WR's for depth bad hopefully they can get them
That's Killy's speciality. Killy is a marginal recruiter just as he is a marginal coach and why he attains marginal results.
I know its more common in bball but getting a 5th year grad transfer wouldn't be bad even for depth. Similar to Cody Riggs of Sebastian
You think he is above average because ND gets above average talent. Again, please stop comparing ND to MSU, Purdue and INdianna and start comparing ND to other Big time programs like OSU, Michigan, Bama, FSU etc. If Meyer, Saban, Kiffin, Jimbo etc were at ND they would have top 5 classes. This will be 4 yeas in a row ND won't have a top 10 class. Weis always had top 10 classes, way more 5 stars and a #1 class. You STILL can recruit elite talent at ND, but it requires a dynamic, tireless recruiter and Killy and his staff are anything but that. You hear pathetic stories of Killy making appointments to see kids on recruiting trips etc. Considering Killy is recruiting at ND he is doing at best a marginal job. The numbers prove this and his record proved that. Yes, ND has recently been out coached by lesser teams, but when they went up against a team like OSU they were not close in talent either.
There would need to be some disconnect there with the rate he's put players in the NFL. He can't be both a shitty coach and recruiter. It would have to be one or the other.
Also Greer Martini was the second name he mentioned when asked about the best NFL prospects on next year's team.
You shouldn't. The NFL is a place where guys kind find a spot with a niche or role. You've seen over sized college S be moved to LB and play well in the NFL where teams pass at a much higher rate. Tranquill will benefit more than any other player on this team IMO from Elko. That is if he's moved to a rover position. I've been saying for 3 years that guy is a LB and IMO could be a very good one. As a LB he has very good athleticism. As a S avg to below. He's physical enough and smart enough to handle that change. Size maybe only question but if he can get to 225 or so he will be fine as a rover. As for NFL prospects on this next years team I could see McGlinchy and Nelson both being day one picks. With a big year you could also see Mustipher or Bars round out near the end of the draft or be a UDFA. Nyles Morgan will get drafted. Everybody else is not good enough or young. Martini could be a UDFA and play special teams in the NFL.
Elko's Rover slides out and covers WRs frequently. That's not a spot for Tranquil. He'd end up in more man coverage as a rover than as a safety.
Well at a certain point every coverage becomes man coverage. When he's a deep safety with a receiver running at him, he's fucked. If he's in the slot at least there will be a safety on top of him to protect him.
I haven't studied Elko system. Going off more what Driskell has said as far as fit. Rover is usually a jack of all trades and when in man its a blitz or he's playing man under with help over. In that case I'm not worried because less of a chance of getting exposed because its not a base play. The guy is near the box and blitzes which suits him well. Think rover is a great fit
Larz at 18stripes is two articles into a series of film breakdown of Elko's defense. It's really good so far. One big takeaway is that Elko doesn't blitz his rover often. He's much more likely to blitz safeties.
Tons of new names popping up with crystal ball picks to ND. Elko and Long seem to be hitting the road especially hard. Hopefully it pays off.
So apparently ACCN thought Boston college Duke was a better game than Florida state nd. Should still be on espn3/watch ESPN, but I'ma little annoyed.
ND has 9 commits in the Scout top 300 Spoiler Whatever happens over the next couple weeks, Notre Dame is poised to bring in a talented core of prospects on National Signing Day. Nine current verbal commitments or early enrollees landed in the final Scout 300 for the Class of 2017. However the current Notre Dame recruiting haul finishes out, it won’t be short on talent at its core. Nine current verbal commitments or early enrollees are listed in the final Scout 300 for the Class of 2017. Notre Dame is currently sitting on 15 total commitments, meaning the vast majority of its pledges are ranked in the top 300 nationally. Tight end Brock Wright leads the way at No. 76 overall followed closely by linebacker David Adams at No. 88. They’re the only two ranked inside the top 100. Offensive tackle Josh Lugg is at No. 107 following a strong week at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Tight end Cole Kmet (109) also played for the East team at the Army Bowl. Kmet pairs with Wright to make up half of the top four tight ends in the country. Stanford commitment Colby Parkinson is the top-ranked tight end. Washington commitment Hunter Bryant is second. Wright and Kmet follow. Remaining Irish commitments in the Scout 300 include offensive lineman Robert Hainsey (129), defensive tackle Darnell Ewell (146), running back C.J. Holmes (155), offensive lineman Aaron Banks (163) and quarterback Avery Davis (189). Safety Isaiah Robertson and offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons are rated as four-star prospects outside the top 300. Robertson joins Wright, Hainsey, Holmes and Banks as early enrollees. They’ve all started classes at Notre Dame this week. Others will have to wait until National Signing Day to formally join the program. And the Irish staff is hoping to add more prospects to their ranks. Among uncommitted targets, four-star wide receiver Oliver Martin is the only one ranked by Scout. Martin checks in at No. 216 overall. He’s also considering Iowa and Michigan State, among others. On the flip side, some that have departed the recruiting class also find themselves in the rankings. Four-star cornerback Paulson Adebo, now committed to Stanford, is the highest rated at No. 125. Defensive end Robert Beal (167), cornerback Elijah Hicks (256) and linebacker Pete Werner (266) are also listed. Defensive end Donovan Jeter is rated a four-star prospect outside the top 300. Beal has been committed to Georgia since July. Hicks enrolled at Cal after de-committing from the Irish earlier this month. Werner is pledged to Ohio State. Michigan landed Jeter during the season. we had 6 in the 247's list and 8 in the Rivals 250 i know we are low on numbers but that's a pretty quality class i personally think Lugg is our best commit - he's a legit top 50 player with Rd 1 draft potential
Hello #Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans. Quick question: Before Diaco came to ND, were you guys running the 4-3 or 3-4?
diaco came with BK, before that we had a clusterfuck of a 4-3 defense under john tenuta, he still isnt finished calling blitzes for ND. diaco was good
Its a painful defense to watch but its shockingly effective- its pretty much based on tackle extremely well and keep the other team in front of you. He believes opposing offenses will just fuck up and give the ball back Its wild how much this comes true such as Michigan calling trick plays in 2012 etc
Not a great formula considering we're hitting 3s at a probably unsustainable rate so far and we're only tied.
Brey complaining about the refs. -Questionable offensive foul (moving screen) on Colson -Farrell whacked on a layup (FSU player conceded the foul) and still went for a no-call Bunch of other shit we're not getting calls on. Refs are terrible.
