For all the reasons for optimism about the MF era, I'm still pretty baffled by our handling of the QB position. Why no transfers this year to 1. push Buchner to compete or, 2. act as a backup since even a couple stairs took Buchner out of a spring game? Why throw all your eggs in the Dante basket all winter and spring just to seemingly pull out of it? If Carr is happy as a clam in 2024 why make it public to him and Dante that 2023 might happen instead of fighting for Dante? Why not move on to other 2023s if we have a chance and Carr doesn't want to reclass (technically him staying another year in HS should be beneficial for us if he wouldn't compete until 2024 anyway)?

Just a lot of strange stuff

Very possible, I’d just like to see happen incrementally and organically, rather than him pushing too hard and injuring himself or putting on bad weight. I realize it’s easier to do at that age lol. I just think it’s worth putting the full court press on Dante til signing day regardless of a commitment to give CJ that time if he needs it. If Dante came to ND he won’t be there as a senior, one way or another. CJ will still get plenty of time to shine

You likely aren’t getting a transfer in that’s better than Pyne and not a “starter”.

There’s one piece of continuation on our staff from the previous one - the guy who handles the QB position. While I’m very excited to see what Rees turns into as a playcaller, there are absolutely some managerial/organizational things he needs unlearn from the Kelly era.

Possibly true, but is that a bad thing if the transfer is willing to come in? If he's better than Buchner, than oh well; I'd love to see Buchner crush it this year but I want "whoever gives us the best chance to win" to be the starter. If he's not better than Buchner but is some fifth year happy to get a grad degree from ND, let him compete with Pyne and you'd just feel better about our depth. We're one play away from a season with Pyne, one play and one bad Pyne half away from "fuck it, let's see what Angeli's got" which is a scary spot for a team with playoff hopes

Who were they going to get? They 100% could not promise a starting position to anybody. There was nobody good enough that was going to be willing to come in and compete and accept the results. The top QB transfers all went into situations where they knew they would be the man.

It takes two parties to agree to a situation. They can't just will it to happen like fans seem to think. Any QB they could convince to agree to a competition was probably not only not better than Pyne, but perhaps even Angeli.

St. Louis (Mo.) Christian Brothers College four-star running back Jeremiyah Love is one of the most coveted backs in the class of 2023. The 6-0, 190-pounder is listed as the No. 71 overall talent in the country and No. 4-ranked athlete nationally due to his ability to play multiple positions at a high level.

Love just wrapped up all five official visits to Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas A&M. As I said at Irish Illustrated, I am not interested in the quick post-visit updates that are always glowing as much as I am the in-depth, detailed pieces that shed true insight into how things are trending with a recruit or how a visit truly went similar to my piece on five-star running back Richard Young.

That said, here is the latest I’m hearing about his recruitment and how likely it is that he lands with the Fighting Irish.

In checking with multiple sources, there is rising optimism at Notre Dame. No, we’re not talking about a silent commit or anything close to him being a lock to ending up in South Bend, but things seem to be trending well for Notre Dame to at least be a Top 2 contender and if he ended up with the Irish, it wouldn’t shock the current staff in the slightest.

Love took his official visit to Notre Dame on June 17. From what I gathered, things went really well. The connection to the Irish goes back to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. He was the one that offered Love well before he blew up and he was recruiting him behind the scenes before the offer was even extended. He did a great job of laying the ground work and making Notre Dame a player early.

Beyond that, I’m told Notre Dame as a program and a school checks off the boxes Love and his family are looking for in a school. The school, the degree, the brand, it all speaks for itself and that resonated well with Love. He saw that on the visit and I’m told he expressed as much on campus. The meetings, the tours, the conversations, it hit home with Love and his family.

However, the visit is where new running backs coach Deland McCullough was able to shine. I’m told that their time together was eye-opening for Love. I’m told McCullough left a major impression during their film sessions. He taught Love a ton during their relatively-short time together that weekend. I’m told that in 12 minutes, McCullough had Love understanding four multiple defensive fronts, multiple core pass protections and had the young talent beyond fired up to just get on the field and share what he learned. The talked about running styles, inside zone, outside zone, ball placement, and just the inner workings of becoming an elite ball-carrier. The detail, expertise and ease of the teaching combined with the easy-to-understand methodology hit home with Love.

Beyond that, I’m told the testimonies of McCullough as a coach, person and player from the likes of Andy Reid, LeSean McCoy, Le’Veon Bell and many others is once again something that made an impact. Their words, the video backing up what McCullough was saying and teaching, the intricate details of how he’d become a better player and person at Notre Dame, the combine prep discussion, getting to the league, the benefits of being a Notre Dame student-athlete now and in the future, there are a ton of reasons why Love enjoyed his time in South Bend.

Love is coveted and landing a player of his caliber is not easy. That said, the combination of McCullough, Rees and head coach Marcus Freeman will be tough to turn down. Love has a lot to think about right now, but one thing Fighting Irish fans should know is that these guys give Notre Dame the best shot at landing him and that’s all you can ask for.

That's fair, and I'm not an expert in the portal so can't name you four guys I think they should have had. Just saying that at the time Stuckey was leaking WR names left and right as potential transfers (ASU guy, UCF guy, etc.) Rees was sunshine pumping and getting Loy to write articles like "Buchner: Will Rees Mold Him to Be the GOAT?" type stuff. Seems like they didn't even try and now we have a bit of an awkward situation in 2022 (two plays away from a true freshman a lot of people were surprised was a "take" starting) and seems like we'll only get one elite QB between 2023 and 2024 (don't think Sayin is happening).

It's not a BURN IT DOWN situation but when you got the schools we're chasing (OSU, Bama, etc.) literally filtering through top 100 guys like crazy, its a bit disappointing.

The big differences are 1. WR has a gaping hole in the roster that is vastly worse than QB. In reality, three scholarship QBs is pretty normal for college football in 2022. 5 true scholarship WRs is nuts. 6 if you count a walk on who earned a ride. Still nuts. Add in that you can put up to 5 WRs on the field at a time and regardless, a rotation is normal even with a lot of 2 and 3 WR sets and any WR looking to transfer in would see a much clearer path to opportunity than a QB. More QB depth and competition is a want. WR is a need.

And in reality, there weren't any good options at QB who would be happy to comptete/back up. And the true starters really weren't guaranteed to be better than Buchner. Sure, there were a couple with more experience, but not necessarily more talented.

Loy's interview with Ryan Wingo...having Carr committed and recruiting is soooooooo important

that's what Dante should have been doing if he truly wanted ND and that's why I'd rather have Carr in 2023 than Dante even though Dante is an elite player

St. Louis (Mo.) University high school five-star receiver Ryan Wingo visited Notre Dame last week. Following his trip, the 6-2, 200-pounder spoke with Irish Illustrated and 247Sports about how things went for him in South Bend around the Fighting Irish coaching staff.

The No. 1 receiver in America had nothing but great things to say about Notre Dame.

    On the Notre Dame visit

"When I got there, they kind of toured me around the coaches offices, the players lounge, things like that. Then I went and watched some of the camp. Then I had a meeting with coach Rees and a meeting with coach Stuckey."

On Chansi Stuckey helping Notre Dame as the new receivers coach

"It's for sure a positive. I stay in constant contact with coach Stuckey. I'm in more contact with him than I was with coach Alexander. He's just real with you. He's a great person all around. We gel pretty well in my opinion."

On the highlight of the trip

"Probably when CJ Carr pulled up. We got food together and stuff like that. This was really my first time meeting him, but from what I've seen he's a cool dude. He's not arrogant or anything. He's a real cool, humble dude. He's a cool dude."

On the conversation he had that was the most meaningful

"Probably the conversation I had with CJ Carr. You get to see it from a commit's standpoint. It was just cool to see everything from him and that conversation."

    On offensive coordinator Tommy Rees

"Coach Rees was the one that offered me back in my freshman year. He was showing me videos of how they'd use me all over the field. It was cool to see because I do that in high school now. Being able to do that in college too would be a great opportunity for me."

On the personality of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees

"Coaching-wise, I've seen that he's real passionate. I was watching the camp and he's real passionate about what he does. I also watched them practice a little bit and he's really passionate about what he does. That's a good thing you want out of the offensive coordinator because he controls the offense. You want the ball and you need someone that is passionate about their job and someone who wants to spread the ball around."

    1COMMENTS
    On head oach Marcus Freeman

"That was my first time meeting him and first time talking to him. He's a cool dude. It was just really cool to be able to see his aspirations. He was showing me his message for Notre Dame football. It was pretty cool."
