I like this a lot better than the "coaches have to coach better, players have to play better" mindset which is just code for "none of this is my fault"

long-con by ND players. if ND beats OSU and day loses to Penn State and Michigan, he's firmly on the hot seat and Marcus is the Ohio State coach in 2 years. This way, Marcus stays and beats Day for years to come imo tbh iyam fwiw iykyk

Hah. I posted this right after before we knew about 10 men. (Thanks for the reminder, Goose). I guess we found out why there was nobody on that end of the line.

For as much as I was a huge Golden defender after Ohio State (and I’ll die on that hill), I’m equally as worried about what Caleb Williams is going to do to his defense. He doesn’t defend scrambling QBs well at all. It’s going to be a nightmare unless we can create fuckery.

It’s not. It would’ve been a free play if we got caught offsides trying to run another player on the field last second.

I've had the same thoughts. I wonder if it would be unabetted to the QB and whistled dead since they would be running on the field from the 30ish toward the goal line. I also think Freeman could have called TO (knowing that we didn't have one, but bet the ref whistles play dead and we get penalized).

I guess I was thinking they’d have someone on the line make contact to stop the play rather than trying to run someone on. Or have a coach run onto the field and get a personal foul to stop the play. But I guess coordinating with someone on the field was not feasible and maybe a coach doing something wouldn’t have worked either.

But doing nothing seems like the worst possible plan

I keep coming back to how did Bertrand not recognize and do just this. Not only would you think you’d notice a missing dude checking your run fits but also as the de facto coach on the field shouldn’t you be checking you got a full squad?

Can't help but think Joe Schmidt would've fixed this, and then subsequently been run over on the ensuing play.

Expecting someone on the LOS to look over at the sideline, hear what the coaches are saying at the loudest time of the game, and act on something they’ve never, ever practiced or prepared for is an unrealistic expectation of the players. Sure, in a perfect world JT Bertrand has the presence of mind to tap the center on the helmet to stop everything, but that would be an insanely heady play considering everything going on.

The only realistic way we could have expected a penalty without a free play in that situation is Marcus calling an illegal timeout. And even then refs are now schooled to just not award it.

I have no problem on not getting a penalty or Marcus’ comments. I have all the problem in the world getting into that situation…twice…after a timeout…after Ohio State substituted after the first play and the ref stopped them from snapping it to allow an ND sub…and also keeping our Nickel package on the field when OSU subbed to their jumbo package.

We keep making a big deal of only having 10 on the field, and deservedly so. But keeping our nickel unit out there after OSU subbed to jumbo is just as equally egregious. It’s fucking insane we almost stopped them still.

I'm sorry, but Marcus didn't know we had 10 men on the field until right after the game. We were given two chances to sub and we did not. They literally stopped the snap to allow us to run on a different personnel and we didn't. What makes it hurt even more is that OSU supposedly had another rollout pass called (per my buddy who is a massive OSU fan) and McCord subbed that at the line when he saw nobody there. At best, I give a 50/50 shot to that rollout pass working when running to gain two feet at a gap where there's no DL is pretty much a guarantee.

Putting 10 men on the field aside, the bigger mistake on that final drive was letting them convert the 3rd and 19 with no pressure. Free release, up the seam, 20 yard pitch and catch. Completely inexcusable. There was :15 seconds left in the game and they had no timeouts. You need to bring and least 5. A sack and the game's over. A pressure and the game is realistically over. Even a catch in bounds and they're scrambling to set up a final play before the clock expires while we have a luxury of taking a TO at the last second if it looks like they're gonna get it off to set up our defense.

Between the RPO on 1st and 10 when we needed one first down to win the game and knew they were bringing the house to stop run, and the free release on 3rd and 19, both coordinators have one play call that will haunt the team for the whole season. And that's BEFORE any discussion of 10 men on the field.

One other point, which my 8 year old that plays too much Madden made to me during the game, that I've not seen anywhere - OSU should have taken a knee on the extra point.

There were two ways ND could have not lost that game after the TD was scored.

One was a TD on the kickoff.

Second was a blocked extra point returned for 2 and forcing OT.

OSU could have easily negated the second option.

    .
I heard it on the cover3 reaction show as well.

I would have 1 counterargument: I think having a facemask/horsecollar on the kick off return and a free untimed down with schaeders booming leg is a bigger risk that a blocked kick returned for 2

So onto a positive topic because reading the ND Analytics team's summary of the game almost made me throw up.

Obviously, beating OSU would have been our biggest win in forever, beating USC in 3 weeks would be our biggest win in forever, etc. - but how would the Duke win rank in biggest wins of the last decade? Kind of silly to think about because they're a non-traditional power who may very well finish 7-5 or 8-4 (or 11-1...), but would this uhhh be one the five biggest wins of the past half decade? Kind of nuts to think about.

Yeah they initially put the offense out there and then changed it up. With 1 seconds left, there were shenanigans that could have happened on the kickoff/offensive play that could have resulted in ND winning with a miracle FG
