    He is already damn good

The most interesting player to me right now and a guy that could turn this whole team around is donte Vaughn. He was good as a freshman. He played injured last year and it showed. If he can be healthy he could really fill a big hole at boundary corner.

He was probably just thinking of the city but it was not the discussion at all. Sure miami is a top city and way over Gainesville but not as a recruit. Visiting miami must suck, nobody cares

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Brian Kelly spent part of last season’s idle week in Virginia because Notre Dame wanted Chris Tyree, the 5-foot-9, 178-pound running back from Thomas Dale High School who committed to the Irish on Thursday. The trip, which fell at the midpoint of an undefeated regular season, was more a show of intent than a specific recruiting pitch. Notre Dame was a contender for Tyree back then but not a leader, not with Alabama, Oklahoma, Penn State, Stanford and Virginia Tech in play.

This was not the kind of recruiting trip Notre Dame’s head coach usually makes, with Kelly tending to be willing closer in December on seniors more than a pounder of pavement in October on juniors. He made an impression anyway, one Thomas Dale head coach Kevin Tucker remembered.

“It’s more about just showing your face in the school. You’re not trying to break any NCAA rules running into the kid,” Tucker said. “But at the same time, it was nice for them to come down and get the chance to meet us.

“He sat down with me and my defensive coordinator, we had a game with playoff implications coming up, and we talked about some of our coverages and blitzes we were doing. That was pretty cool for him to sit down in-season, to take that time. Whether he was going to coach Chris or not, it didn’t matter to him. He was just talking ball with two high school guys.”

It was the second time that month that Tyree and Kelly had been in the same space. Tyree had visited Virginia Tech on the night Notre Dame routed the Hokies in Blacksburg. The Irish were already ranked in the Top 10 nationally at the point, about as high as they’d get with Tyree during the regular season.

Tyree showed only a small part of his hand when he announced his own Top 10 on Dec. 4, two days after Notre Dame booked its spot in the College Football Playoff. And though Notre Dame felt like more than a team on the list, it didn’t look like a favorite either.

Later that month Tyree visited Notre Dame during bowl practices and got a sense of how offensive coordinator Chip Long would use him, even if the trip lacked the resources for a deep dive into the playbook. There was a Playoff game to prepare for, after all. That fact alone had proven significant to Tyree, whose recruitment would ultimately follow teams positioned for titles, ending with Notre Dame, Alabama and Oklahoma in play.

“Any one of those three places you have a chance to play for championships, and there were other schools that got eliminated for that very reason alone,” Tucker said. “Who wouldn’t want to play in the College Football Playoff at least once? Some of those schools you might have chance to play in it four times.”

As Tyree watched Notre Dame practice that December day in the antiquated Loftus Center while the program’s glassy indoor facility construction continued across the street, he was still watching a program that only wanted him. Same as when Notre Dame offered in May of Tyree’s sophomore year, same as when Kelly stopped by metro Richmond in October, Tyree was talent at the top of Notre Dame’s recruiting board. This is not nothing. But it is not everything, either.

There’s a difference between wanting and needing.

The Cotton Bowl made the distinction obvious.

The autopsy of Notre Dame’s 30-3 blowout loss to Clemson on Dec. 29 revealed multiple causes of death. The Irish ran three plays in the red zone all afternoon. It didn’t post a run longer than 11 yards. It completed two passes of 20 yards. The old tropes of Notre Dame lacking team speed were dusted off and re-inflated, all while Clemson unleashed hell through Justyn Ross, Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne, two freshmen and a sophomore.

Roughly a week after the demolition, Notre Dame’s offensive staff gathered back at the Gug. The offensive no-show was frustrating statistically but encouraging strategically. The game didn’t reveal Notre Dame as close to the mountain top, but it gave the program a map to the summit. So a staff challenge went out.

Recruit better or Notre Dame would find somebody who could.

Notre Dame has never had the recruiting steamroller found at SEC programs, but now it had a College Football Playoff appearance and 22 wins in two seasons at its back. A program that hadn’t hit double-digit victories in back-to-back seasons in a quarter century could sell winning at the highest level without having to hope nobody looked too closely at the numbers. The “4 for 40” approach could be repackaged as Alabama football meets Stanford academics.

A week later, running backs coach Autry Denson left for Charleston Southern, taking the head coaching post at the FCS program. Two weeks after that, former Stanford running backs coach Lance Taylor replaced Denson, who had already been replaced by Long as the primary recruiter on Tyree.

“Coach Long is about as down-to-earth a guy that you’re going to meet,” Tucker said. “You’d never know he’s the offensive coordinator of a major college football program. That’s a good thing, I think. He’s one of those guys that everybody can talk to. It’s not, ‘I’m the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and I’m not speaking to you.’ And we’ve had guys like that come through the past from different schools.”

By now, Tyree was starting to focus his recruitment on Notre Dame, Alabama and Oklahoma. Kelly returned to Thomas Dale High School that winter with Long. Alabama head coach Nick Saban showed up, too. Same went for Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, who Tucker said could have been mistaken for a substitute teacher.

Tyree visited his three finalists during spring, starting with Alabama in early March before returning to Notre Dame for spring practice a couple weeks later. During that visit Long got more into the playbook, and Taylor got his first real chance to connect with Tyree. Notre Dame’s general pitch positioned it above Alabama. The Irish argued that the Tide don’t employ all-purpose backs like Long’s playbook does.

When Tyree departed campus with Tucker, Notre Dame felt like it had the running back it needed all but locked up. Then Tyree visited Oklahoma on the weekend of April 12. The Sooners turned Tyree’s head with both Riley’s offense and the show in Norman, weaponizing its spring game to become its recruiting event of the year. When Tyree left Oklahoma, it appeared the Sooners were the new leaders. Notre Dame knew it.

Taylor got on a plane to Virginia a day later. Long got on the phone with Tyree after Taylor left Thomas Dale. If there was a night Tyree also figured out the difference between Notre Dame wanting him and needing him, this was it. These were desperate recruiting pitches, but Notre Dame knew it was in desperate times.

“I felt like a No. 1 priority there,” Tyree said on Thursday after announcing a decision he actually made a couple weeks earlier.

Recruiting is about making prospects believe exactly what college coaches want them to believe. And on that front, Notre Dame’s biggest move with Tyree came in the 48 hours after his Oklahoma visit. He was needed. Notre Dame had known that since the Cotton Bowl. It just took Tyree a couple more months to figure that out himself.

And so, the Irish beat the Sooners and Tide for a prospect with 4.38 speed and a 3.89 GPA. Those figures don’t need to be mutually exclusive. It just feels like they are sometimes. Lance Taylor knows better, of course. That’s part of the reason why Notre Dame hired him in the first place.

Brian Kelly was wrapping up spring practice, putting a bow on the Blue-Gold Game before his coaching staff hit the road for the spring evaluation period. It would be Taylor’s first time out, with Tyree the first stop following that Oklahoma visit. Kelly talked about the reasons why Notre Dame was in position to challenge for the Playoff again, starting with one of the biggest reasons Long used to convince Kelly that Taylor was the guy to replace Denson.

“It starts with recruiting good players,” Kelly said. “You have to recruit good players. You have to develop them. I think our preparation has been really good. We have to continue to prepare the right way. There’s a clear mission for what we want to accomplish and a standard for what we all follow.

“There’s only one thing we’re after here and that’s winning a championship. I just think there’s a clarity in what the mission is and how we go about it on a day-to-day basis.”

In the month that followed, Taylor enhanced Long’s chase of Tyree while organizing Notre Dame’s running back board behind its No. 1 target. He recruited beyond the 2020 class, too, with the effort enough to take some work off Long’s plate, letting the offensive coordinator focus on different parts of the board. It’s part of the reason why Notre Dame landed four-star receiver Jordan Johnson and four-star offensive tackle Tosh Baker this spring, to go with two four-star tight ends and a four-star quarterback on the commitment list. Notre Dame’s recruiting staff is as deep as it’s been under Kelly.

And in the shrewdest move of Taylor’s first month on the trail, he appropriated one of his former employer’s traditions and made it Notre Dame’s. The guy who coached Christian McCaffrey, both at Stanford and with the Carolina Panthers, plus recruited Bryce Love, got Tyree to see those success stories in Palo Alto as previews of what’s coming in South Bend.

“Just being that Coach Taylor is there now and he’s coached players like me, like Christian McCaffrey and Bryce Love, that makes me feel really comfortable,” Tyree said. “I have really good relationships with the coaches and the teammates. I just felt really comfortable.”

That Notre Dame can take one of Stanford’s best recruiting pitches and make it its own would be like USC hiring Harry Hiestand and convincing elite line prospects that being the next Quenton Nelson or Mike McGlinchey meant coming to Los Angeles. As hard as that might be to swallow for Stanford, Taylor made it go down easy with Tyree. Now Notre Dame has its highest-rated offensive skill commitment of the Brian Kelly era. In the 247Sports all-time commitment rankings, Tyree slots between Kyle Rudolph and Stephon Tuitt.

“I give Notre Dame all the credit,” Tucker said. “Like Clemson, they’re recruiting a certain type of guys, guys that can fit their locker room, their campus lifestyle. Stanford is the same way.

You can’t just invite anybody up there. It’s got to be somebody that can handle the rigors of life at Notre Dame.”

On Thursday, Tyree told the college football world that taking on the challenge in South Bend was exactly what he wanted. That meant Notre Dame got exactly what it needed.

this brings me to a point. I know I really like this class but its gonna be a small one and there arent many guys left who can make a big impact in the ranking of this class unless someone comes kind of out left field. Next years class however could be even higher ranked.
Lets just take the guys who ND seems to be the clear CB leader for:
Tengwell, Dellinger, Johnsons little bro, Fisher, Dixon and now Rubio and those guys already bring it on par with this current class almost. Gotta keep in mind that the star power of the current class is coming from spots that arent that easy for ND to recruit usually

This class has probably peaked in its rankings spot, ND needed a perfect storm to finish in the top 10 and its not going to happen. Even one wild card player wont fix that

Some guys should continue to rise in rankings though such as Mayer and Baker
