while undoubtedly true here it’s a promising sign just to get these elite guys to come visit because sooner or later it’ll resonate with someone that would have never considered even stepping foot on campus under the previous regime

    weekend updates from D3

We’ll keep updating this as we get more intel, but here is the intel we have so far from the weekend.

*** As expected, things went extremely well with Ronan Hanafin this weekend. Notre Dame met him and fellow Massachusetts native Preston Zinter (a Notre Dame commit) at the airport with a dancing Chad Bowden, and that kick started what was a great weekend for Hanafin. He connected very well with Tommy Rees, and his time with Chansi Stuckey was especially impactful. Notre Dame needed a great weekend to close things out and they had a great weekend. We’ll see if Hanafin shuts his recruitment down or decides to take another visit or two. Notre Dame would like him to shut things down. We’ll soon find out if that happens or not.

*** The recruitment of Christian Gray has been a bit of a roller coaster ride, but Notre Dame has endured and continued to climb higher and higher. Gray came into the weekend a bit nervous about his pending decision, but Notre Dame did everything it needed to do to help ease those concerns. Gray was moved by the visit, and it started from the outset. Notre Dame has made it very clear to Gray that this is where he needs to be, and that message was very well received. As of right now he still has visits planned to USC and Ohio State, but Notre Dame has put itself in a tremendous position. Mike Mickens has done great work in this recruitment.

*** Linebacker Jaiden Ausberry made his third trip to Notre Dame this weekend and he had both of his parents with him. Ausberry is a great fit for Notre Dame and the staff did a tremendous job convincing him of that this weekend. His connection with the committed players grew stronger, and Notre Dame also put in a lot of work on the parents, as they know they will be very key to him being willing to decide to leave the South. Notre Dame blew his family away, especially his mother. The parents of Notre Dame’s committed players also did a great job on the parents as well. As he leaves campus today he isn’t quite done yet, but the way this weekend went it wouldn’t shock us if Notre Dame pulled way out in front.

*** Notre Dame pulled out all the big guns this weekend for safety Caleb Downs, who was absolutely blown away by the visit. This is a bit surprising when you consider how often he has been on campus, but the football/academic presentation for Downs was incredibly impressive. Just as important, Downs connected extremely well with the Notre Dame commits and some of the top uncommitted kids. We were told he was inseparable from Peyton Bowen and Adon Shuler all weekend. Bryan and I both have a hard time seeing him picking Notre Dame, but our “I don’t want to believe it” has been severely tamped down after this weekend’s events.

*** The Irish staff did a great job with wideout Rico Flores, and they especially impressed his mother. Rico is reportedly a quiet kid so he wasn’t quite as outgoing as others, but sources say he enjoyed himself a great deal and the Irish put themselves in a very strong position. Him visiting Ohio State is still a big concern, but the Irish have climbed to the top of his list for now. We’ll see if that holds coming out of his trip to Columbus in two weeks, but as of today Notre Dame has done extremely well with this recruitment. His mother would absolutely have no problem seeing Rico end up in South Bend.

*** We don’t have much on Micah Tease yet, but what little intel we had was very good. As we expected, Notre Dame and USC are the players here. Notre Dame gave him their best “you can play receiver if you want” pitch this weekend, which should give them a legitimate shot at beating USC, who we believe is the leader at the current moment. Tease will be in LA for a visit next weekend.

*** 1:35 PM UPDATE: This was the first chance 2024 quarterback commit CJ Carr had a chance to meet most of the members of the 2023 class, and according to sources things went very well. Carr made a very strong impression on the offensive players in the 2023 class and the ability to quickly bond was impressive. That’s a major positive for the Irish staff.

*** 1:46 PM UPDATE: We didn’t put anything on Jason Moore in the update yet because right now all we have is “He’s having a great time, he’s really hitting things off.” The one thing we are comfortable saying is Moore has really bonded well with the staff members and the other commits. Notre Dame has really done well here, but we just don’t have as much as we have with other guys.

*** 7:17 PM UPDATE: We had a chance to touch base with defensive lineman commit Devan Houstan. He spoke glowingly about the visit, telling me that he thinks bringing down a majority of the committed players really helped build and kickstart relationships with the uncommitted targets on campus. He took me through some of the things the visitors did together, including going to a driving range, Adventureplex, played Madden together and even made smoothies.

I also asked Houstan about Jason Moore and his impact on that visit. He told me that they both have a tremendous relationship and both being from Maryland has allowed them to mesh easily. They were together the entire trip and said that Moore had a great time. Houstan feels that Notre Dame has put themselves in a great spot for Moore.

*** 9:40 AM UPDATE: We spoke to someone very close to Jason Moore this morning. They raved about the interactions with Al Washington, who Moore waas looking forward to talking to individually. Notre Dame seemed to check off the last box and presently have a “great chance” for Moore.

Moore and his family are planning to finalize a decision early in July ideally. This one is trending very well. I was told that Al Washington did about as well you he could have presenting his vision for Jason.

    Gold Standard

With 17 official visitors on campus over the weekend, it was a crucial 48 hours for the Notre Dame’s recruiting efforts, and BlueandGold.com recruiting insider Mike Singer shares everything he’s hearing in this week’s Gold Standard.

*** From everything I’ve heard in talking to parents, recruits and sources on the Notre Dame side of things, it was a fantastic weekend. The recruits bonded, the parents bonded, the weekend was well-organized with a good mix of fun activities and getting down to business, and the family feel was present led by head coach Marcus Freeman. One parent mentioned to me how special it was to have the coaches with their significant others and children so that the recruits and their families could see that personal side of the staff too. I’m told the staff knocked it out of the park, presenting Notre Dame to the prospects and growing relationships.

While all that is nice, there’s no runner-up trophies in recruiting. Notre Dame needs to close on these big-time prospects.

*** Nine of the 17 official visitors are players already committed to the Irish, but Denton (Texas) Guyer safety Peyton Bowen and Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep EDGE Keon Keeley haven’t been seen as “solid” in their respective pledges because they’ve taken visits to other schools this calendar year. I’m only hearing good things about where the Irish stand with both per multiple sources. Notre Dame feels good about both, and from my conversation with Bowen himself yesterday, I got the vibe that he’s going strong with the Irish.

He still might visit Michigan, Oregon and/or Texas A&M this month, but those plans seemed very up in the air and would be unofficial visits. Remember, Bowen’s younger brother Eli is a big-time 2024 cornerback recruit and wants to get out and visit some schools with his family. That is a factor in why Peyton is visiting other programs. At the end of the day, I feel fairly confident that Bowen will stick with Notre Dame.

Notre Dame commits Keon Keeley (left) and Drayk Bowen (right) during their visit for the Blue-Gold Game April 23 (Chad Weaver/Blue & Gold)
For Keeley, the only way I see him ending up elsewhere is due to a big NIL push from some school that he couldn’t refuse. Everything is looking very good with the five-star pass rusher. I’m told his favorite parts of the visit were meeting with defensive line coach Al Washington and defensive coordinator Al Golden (separate meetings), as well as downtime with the Irish players at night.

*** We’re hearing good things about where Notre Dame is at with St. Louis De Smet cornerback Christian Gray and Burlington (Mass.) Buckingham Browne & Nichols School athlete Ronan Hanafin following their weekends in South Bend. Of the uncommitted targets, these are the two I’d say Notre Dame made the biggest move with. I’ve had predictions for both to land at Notre Dame for several months now, and I believe that the Irish are closing in on commitments from both.

*** Folsom (Calif.) High wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. is another prospect who I’m hearing really good buzz about for Notre Dame following his visit. He is scheduled to officially visit Georgia and Ohio State the following two weekends, respectively, so unless Flores actually committed to the ND staff and won’t be taking those trips, I can’t feel overly confident that Flores will pick Notre Dame because he has trips lined up. But again, I’m told his trip went very well, and I still believe Notre Dame will land him.

*** If Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab linebacker Jaiden Ausberry were committing this summer, I’d probably log a prediction for him to choose Notre Dame. However, he told me yesterday that he’s planning on making his decision around early signing day. A lot can unfold in six months, but for now, I do believe the Irish lead for Ausberry coming out of his visit after a conversation with him and talking to sources.

*** Notre Dame has been battling for Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek safety Caleb Downs, but most Irish fans following the recruitment have seen this story before. Downs is five-star player who has Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State as finalists and won’t pick the Irish, right? Maybe. You’d think he’d stay close to home and pick Alabama or Georgia.

But following this weekend, I’m hearing the most positive buzz for Ohio State of the four. Notre Dame sources feel that the Irish are very much in the mix to pull off the major upset. I’m far from projecting Downs to end up at Notre Dame right now, but Downs is far from making up his mind yet, and the Fighting Irish are very much in the picture.

    Caleb Downs (Chad Simmons/On3)
Downs keep his cards close to his vest so it’s tough to get a read from him on where he’s leaning. And various sources have varying opinions on where he’ll end up. But again, we do believe Ohio State has the slight lead currently, although Notre Dame feels it’s in a position to pull off a major upset.

*** Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy offensive tackle Monroe Freeling had a great visit over the weekend, but his recruitment is tough to gauge at the moment. Clemson, Georgia and Notre Dame are the three schools on top for him from what we’re told, and the Bulldogs may actually hold the momentum for him right now. Freeling has said he’ll be taking official visits in the fall. My personal gut feeling is that he ends up elsewhere.

*** Although I was told the generic report on Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington cornerback Micah Tease having a great visit to Notre Dame over the weekend, I don’t have a whole lot else on him. The overall vibe is that Tease is highly considering Notre Dame, but my gut feeling is where he’ll end up elsewhere. He officially visits USC and Michigan State the next two weekends.

*** Fort Washington (Md.) DeMatha Catholic defensive lineman Jason Moore’s time in South Bend went well, but no big news either way on him, as to be expected. He’s taking his June official visits, and we believe he’ll end up choosing between Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. I’d have the Buckeyes running third for him with the Irish having the slightest of leads over the Nittany Lions.

*** A side note on the visit weekend: Lawrence (Mass.) Central Catholic linebacker Preston Zinter checked in at 6-2, 229 pounds with a 33-inch arm length. I heard that Notre Dame was very impressed with this.

*** Saline (Mich.) High quarterback CJ Carr unofficially visited on Saturday. As far as him possibly reclassifying to the 2023 class, I am told that the plan for Carr is to remain as a 2024 prospect but it’s still not off the table. Notre Dame is in pursuit of Detroit Martin Luther King quarterback Dante Moore, and he is still very much listening to the Irish.

    Loy's scoop

Notre Dame just completed its first big official visit weekend of the summer. The list of visitors was loaded and Irish Illustrated already brought you some intel on the guys in attendance, as well as photos of their arrival inside Notre Dame Stadium.

Now let’s get to the juice.

Five-star DB Caleb Downs — Notre Dame did some great work here to put itself in position to land him. I’m told he connected well with the recruits on campus, every coach that has been recruiting him, as well as the current players, most notably Xavier Watts, Jaden Mickey and Ramon Henderson. Downs would 100% fit in at Notre Dame in all aspects. I’m told the high level of recruiting from a national perspective is appealing to Downs, who is ultra-competitive and a young man that wants to leave college with a National Championship under his belt. Notre Dame is under the impression that they have done everything possible to land his commitment and now the ball in his court. Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State are all major players here and it’s actually the Buckeyes that seem to have the most going in their favor right now. But we’re not ruling out the Fighting Irish yet. Of note, from a big picture perspective, I’m told defensive coordinator Al Golden is someone that made a great impression on Downs and his family. There is a lot of confidence that the defense can be great in year one under the new coordinator.

Four-star DL Jason Moore — This is an interesting one depending on who you talk to. Just to be clear, everything about this trip went well from what I’m told. “He absolutely loved it,” said one source. But Moore is quiet. He’s all about his business. He’s not big into the fluff and the bright lights. Moore is very detailed in his approach and that is a reason he hasn’t pulled the trigger yet regarding a commitment. Notre Dame, led by defensive line coach Al Washington, continues to push the right buttons here and I do believe they’ll eventually land his commitment, but it’s still a close battle with Penn State and Michigan.

Four-star OL Monroe Freeling — This is another interesting one worth tracking. For some reason there has been chatter going around or rumors, if you will, about whether or not Freeling has a spot in Notre Dame’s class. From what I can gather, he 100% has the green light if he wants to commit to head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The staff wants him at Notre Dame. Again, I’m not sure where these rumors are coming from but they are getting spread and just to clear it up — if Freeling wants in at Notre Dame right now, he has the opportunity to join the class. Clemson, Florida, Miami and Georgia are others in play for Freeling, but Notre Dame put itself in a good spot with a strong visit this weekend. He has hit it off with four-star offensive tackle and Notre Dame commit Sullivan Absher and they spent a lot of time together. In addition, on Saturday he was able to get around new five-star quarterback commit CJ Carr and the two had a blast getting to know each other.

Four-star LB Jaiden Ausberry — Depending on who you talk with, you may get a different perceived leader in this recruitment. Will he stay at home at LSU? Will he join his brother at Auburn? Will he carve out his own path at Michigan or Notre Dame? My gut feeling is that Notre Dame is the leader following his two-day visit in South Bend. The staff feels that was as well. Defensive coordinator Al Golden and defensive line coach Al Washington are doing great, great work here and have connected well with him over time. The relationship with the staff is what has Notre Dame in such a great spot. I’m told head coach Marcus Freeman had some “eye-opening conversations” with him according to a source, which obviously hit home. It should be noted that freshman cornerback Jaden Mickey continues to look like a top recruiter and host for on-campus visitors. Like with Downs, he made a big impression on Ausberry. I’m close to a Notre Dame Crystal Ball prediction here and one could be in by day’s end. I’m just putting my final touches on things and just want to make sure I check all boxes before doing so.

Four-star WR Rico Flores — Notre Dame has an opportunity to land some of the top receivers in the country and the duo of Chansi Stuckey and Tommy Rees are doing all they can to make that happen. Flores checks those boxes and Notre Dame believes it is the leader in the clubhouse right now at this point in his recruitment. I’m told despite playing it pretty close to the vest, Flores made it very clear that Notre Dame is going to be tough to beat. I’m told it was a “perfect visit” per a source. Flores said that “it was a great visit” and it was one he called “breathtaking.” Flores and four-star receiver commit Braylon James left this weekend as though they found a new lifelong friend, which can’t hurt. He heads to Georgia next and Ohio State after that, but I’m close to a Notre Dame Crystal Ball prediction here and one could be in by day’s end. I’m just putting my final touches on things and just want to make sure I check all boxes before doing so.

Three-star WR / DB Ronan Hanafin — Notre Dame continues to push the right buttons with Hanafin. A young man that is getting closer to a final decision, the staff is doing a good job of not putting any added pressure on him. They know he wants to be patient with the process and not rush into anything and they have been great about that since day one. I’m told the one-on-one attention from head coach Marcus Freeman went a long way with Hanafin and his family. The Irish could very well be the leader as of today, at least the staff feels that way following their in-depth conversations with him over the weekend, and I’m inclined to agree. Barring a change of heart, it looks as though Hanafin will take his official visit to Alabama next weekend and we’ll see if he locks in anything else after that. All that said, I think the overall fit, his relationship with the staff, the fact that they have treated him like a top priority and target for so long, and his relationship with his good friend Preston Zinter, a Notre Dame commit in the 2023 class, is all going to help the Fighting Irish in this one. I’m close to a Notre Dame Crystal Ball prediction here and one could be in by day’s end. I’m just putting my final touches on things and just want to make sure I check all boxes before doing so. In addition, I would be shocked if he ends up a three-star when all is said and done. He's a terrific talent and everyone seems to be taking notice.

Four-star CB Christian Gray — Notre Dame has long been considered the favorite for the St. Louis native, but LSU was a program that shouldn’t be counted out. USC and Ohio State are both very much in play right now, but this looks like a battle between the Fighting Irish and Tigers. Despite his extremely close relationship with LSU defensive backs coach Robert Steeples, I still feel good about my 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for him to land at Notre Dame. Come July 4, at least as of today, I believe he’ll chose the Fighting Irish.

Four-star CB / WR Micah Tease — As of today, I believe Notre Dame lands commitments from four-star corners Christian Gray and Micah Bell. It would give the Fighting Irish the size and speed at the position that they have been coveting. It would be a tremendous haul at the position. Despite a good visit to Notre Dame over the weekend, there isn’t a ton of optimism coming from the Irish regarding their chances with Tease, a two-way standout out of Oklahoma. The staff has been pushing hard for him as a cornerback, but I still get the vibe that his true love is on the offensive side of the ball. That may be a factor here, but I think he lands elsewhere barring a surprising development.

    Other News and Notes

Five-star quarterback commit CJ Carr — I’m told that our recent reports about CJ Carr potentially reclassifying still remain a possibility. I’m told the plan is for him to continue putting himself in position to join the 2023 class just to give him every opportunity possible, but a final decision hasn’t been made at this time. That said, he recruited his tail off on Saturday while on campus and hit it off with just about everyone he came in contact with. He worked hard on the offensive linemen and receivers especially. The Notre Dame staff is thrilled to have its prized quarterback on board pushing hard to build the team around him.

Five-star defensive end Keon Keeley and four-star safety Peyton Bowen — Notre Dame still expects Keon Keeley and Peyton Bowen in their class come the Early Signing Day. The don’t expect to lose either, especially after a great weekend in South Bend. They aren’t ruling out future visits from either, especially with Bowen and from an unofficial capacity, but they believe that when it comes time to put pen to paper, both will be Irish.

    40COMMENTS
Four-star class of 2024 defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain — He showed up to the Sunday Night Football camp and looked the part. He moves well, has good size, and reiterated how solid he is in his pledge. I’m not sure anyone will be able to flip him from his early commitment due to his connection to head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Al Washington.
