    Prister's ranking of the recruits

    Subtract one, add five.

That’s what’s happened to Notre Dame’s Class of 2023 since Irish Illustrated offered its last Ranking The (Verbally Committed) Recruits on March 11. One thing that hasn’t changed is Notre Dame’s current No. 1 ranking.

Since the second week of March, the Irish have gone from nine verbal commitments to 13 on the basis of CB-Justyn Rhett’s de-commitment from Notre Dame to his pledge to Georgia on April 25 and the addition of four four-star prospects and one three-star.

On April 19, WR- Braylon James (Round Rock, Texas) – 247Sports’ No. 67 composite prospect – joined the Irish fold. On the day Rhett de-committed, three-star interior offensive lineman Sam Pendleton (Pfafftown, NC) chose the Irish. He was followed two days later by No. 151 composite DL- Boubacar Traore.

On May 7, Notre Dame landed No. 191 composite Devan Houston (Sharpsburg, Md.), and on May 13, OT- Sullivan Absher (Belmont, NC) – the nation’s No. 274 composite player -- gave the Irish their 13th current verbal commitment.

By virtue of its one five-star (DE- Keon Keely, Tampa, Fla.), a nation-leading 11 four-stars and one three-star, Notre Dame sits atop the college football world in the Class of 2023.

The following is our order of Irish verbal commitments based upon our projected impact of these 13 players during their careers at Notre Dame. The pecking order is so close, particularly with the addition of James, Traore and Houstan, one shouldn’t read too much into the difference between, for example, the No. 4-5 players and the No. 7-8 players. These are a bunch of very good prospects, which has propelled the Irish to the No. 1 spot in the country at the present time.

    • Prister’s Analysis: Not the power back his father was at Michigan State. More of a scatback-type runner with wiggle and vision. At his best when bodies are scattered and he can pick and choose his way through traffic. Has a smooth, aesthetic running style. Glides around a football field, probing for opportunities to slice through a hole or cut it back against the grain where the chaos of a scattered defensive shell plays to his strengths. An excellent pass receiver out of the backfield. In fact, he’d make an attractive slot receiver, too.

Clocked a slow time at an Under Armour camp a while back. Doesn’t always show the quickness to run outside zone. Quicker and shiftier than he is flat-out fast, a la Kyren Williams, but not as elusive as Williams. Needs to be conscious of pad level and knee bend. Hasn’t always showed an inclination to play a physical brand of football but showed improvement in 2021. Needs to have a more consistent burst at his size with a more consistent physical approach.

    • Irish Illustrated Ranking: No. 12
    • Commitment Date: April 25, 2022 (10th)

    • Prister’s Analysis: A physical, brutish player projects more at guard/center to accentuate his strength at the point of attack. Pendleton plays with an extremely strong lower half and exceptional leg drive. A sticky blocker who makes it difficult to get off his block. Plays with very active hands and feet. Will not go to the ground unless he must do so to finish off the block. Does a nice job of really fighting to keep his outside shoulder free as he works his way to the next level and prevents his opponent from crossing his face. Once he gets to the second level, he’ll widen his base, which lowers his shoulder pads and makes him particularly difficult to uproot and circumnavigate.

Surprisingly adept is as a pass blocker. On the edge on the collegiate level, he likely would have difficulty with speed rushers because he doesn’t have the overall quickness or ideal length for a tackle on this level. But on the inside with his active feet and overall strength, he has a chance to be an exceptional pass blocker. Some issues to consider with Pendleton are technique- and body makeup-related. He can be a bit upright at times as a run blocker, due in part because he is so physically dominant over his prep opposition.

    • Prister’s Analysis: A tight end/linebacker prospect. Notre Dame prefers linebacker; most schools recruited him for tight end (the preferred position by Irish Illustrated). At tight end, he plows defenders into the turf. He has excellent hands. An H-back type in the mold of former Irish tight end Tommy Tremble with bigger and better hands. Shows a deceptive speed gear out of his long, powerful strides.

On defense, he uses his powerful lower half and fights to preserve every inch of grass. Versatile, physical and assignment correct. Will line up at Vyper end for Central Catholic and come charging off the edge. A tenacious tackler who steamrolls quarterbacks. He can struggle against big tackles when he gets squared up. A program glue-guy. Would be a nice tight end alternative if competition surpasses him at linebacker.

    • Prister’s Analysis: Massive, powerful, outstanding student, Notre Dame fit. A bull in a china shop, which is a compliment to this hard-charging, rampaging right tackle/guard prospect. More often than not, he sends South Point opponents careening like a compact making contact with a pickup truck. Shows good foot quickness and length, which is what makes him a right tackle prospect. He’s a prep basketball and baseball player, which shows some of his athleticism. He also looks like a young man who could be a 325-pounder down the road, which lends itself more to an interior spot long-term.

Outstanding lower-body strength and drive, and thus, the pickup truck vs. compact comparison. Has the mobility to play on the strongside edge but has a higher upside – in my opinion -- as a strongside guard. His pad level/overall flexibility is very good, although there is footage of alignment with a high-backside from a three-point stance. Also can be a bit of a waist-bender. Not fully convinced that he can reach all the outside zone stuff from the right tackle position that Tommy Rees likes to run, but he does show athleticism. A good tackle on the next level; a very good guard on the next level.

    • Prister’s Analysis: A prototypical in-line/attached tight end with the consistent ability to square up a defender and wall him off the line of scrimmage. Top-notch lower-body strength with rapid-fire footwork and a tenacious attitude. Outstanding knee bend allows him to get underneath most blocks. Will find another defender to block after he’s taken care of the first. Must avoid lunging into his blocks with his aggressive approach.

Fairly nimble as a pass-catcher. Can make the twisting, back-shoulder catch. Isn’t going to run away from most defenders but will run over them. Very difficult to bring down in the open field. A more athletic Brock Wright with additional pass-catching ability. Known for his leadership, work ethic and academic prowess. A comfortable Notre Dame fit.

    • Prister’s Analysis: Body language oozes a love for the physical nature of the game. Technically-sound football player who exudes the desire to get to the end zone with the football in hand or to undercut a ball carrier before he reaches full stride. Plays longer than his measurements indicate.

Spring-loaded run support safety who explodes into ball carriers. A well-rounded athlete who has participated in basketball, baseball, track and field, and boxing. Tends to the nuances of defensive back play. A stickler for fundamentally sound technique. Footwork and change of direction are top level. Every rep is an important rep on the practice field. No apparent red flags. Possesses a high ceiling.

    • Commitment Date: June 29, 2021 (2nd)

    • Prister’s Analysis: A beast with uncommon physical maturity for his age. A burly combination big end/three-technique. Tremendous lower-body power base. Opponents frequently resort to simply tackling Vernon to keep him away from the quarterback/ball carrier. Plays with a menacing presence.

Needs to keep working on his get-off and overall suddenness, which is why some are thinking more interior defensive line than edge defender. Readily admits to the need to keep slapping on muscle, improving his speed and quickness, and mastering his technique. Probably more appropriately listed now as a four-star after five-star recognition early but the ceiling hasn’t reached its peak. Extremely motivated with a high motor. Frankly, he looks like the kind of defensive lineman that consistently excels at a place like Ohio State.

    • Commitment Date: May 7, 2022 (12th)

    • Prister’s Analysis: Strikes a menacing pose as a versatile defensive lineman with Big end, three-technique and nose tackle attributes. Applies a variety of moves and techniques when he’s not simply overpowering the opposition. Has a nice combination of athleticism and power. On one hand, Houstan can overpower with a bull rush; on the other hand, he’ll apply a nifty little swim move that causes offensive linemen to lunge. Swim move is nothing short of sensational with a bit of wiggle to avoid being blocked. Can navigate around blocks as readily as he can power his way to the football, and then closes the gap quickly as he senses blood in the water.

Does an outstanding job of combining strength, footwork and hand usage to disrupt plays. His stop-and-start buttons flow together seamlessly. Keeps his eyes up and diagnoses where the football is headed. When he arrives at the ball carrier, he shows a consistent pattern of wrapping and wrestling the opponent to the ground. Once in his clutches, it’s game over. He can set the edge as a Big end in a three- or four-man front. His ability to play with power and then elude a block make him a three-technique candidate. Since he seems to do some of his best work out of a four-point stance, he has a nose tackle gene as well.

    • 247Sports Rank Among 13 Commitments: No. 7
    • Irish Illustrated Ranking: No. 5
    • Commitment Date: April 27, 2022 (11th)

    • Prister’s Analysis: Plays football with an enforcer-like attitude. Passionate player with natural aggression. Rapid-fire quick off the snap of the football and then uses his powerful lower half to explode into offensive linemen. Combination of strength and aggression makes it very difficult to keep him blocked. Lower-body strength and flexibility, mixed with a natural, imperceptible swim move, frees him up from blocks and launches him toward the quarterback/ball carrier. Epitomizes disruptiveness. The ultimate work hard/play hard competitor.

Traore’s get-off is that of a defensive end. He may not be done growing. His brother, Badara Traore (LSU), is a 6-foot-7, 320-pound offensive tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The younger Traore would be a fit as a strongside defensive end in a three-man front and a three-technique in a four-man front, both of which will be employed by coordinator Al Golden. Incongruous to call a four-star underrated, but with injuries and the pandemic, Traore has just scratched the surface.

    • Irish Illustrated Ranking: No. 4
    • Commitment Date: April 19, 2022 (9th)

    • Prister’s Analysis: Makes the spectacular look routine with his graceful, aesthetic strides and extensive reach. Showed football maturity beyond his age as early as a freshman. Has blow-by speed on the prep level, although his overall speed is more likely in the very good range as opposed to great. Makes spinning, twisting catches look easy. Can weave his way through traffic with vision and stop-on-a-dime cutback ability. His out-cuts are so sharp at times that they tend to be closer to a 75-degree angle as opposed to 90, which makes defending those routes nearly impossible and his cuts imperceptible.

Has the great habit of coming back to the football with authority, particularly when he notices his quarterback needs help. Resourcefulness comes to the forefront as he seeks and finds seams/holes within the coverage. Because he can align in so many places, he’s a threat in a variety of ways, including tunnel screens and slants in addition to the deeper routes in the tree. Uses “box out” ability to keep his opponent away from the football. Shows the consistent ability to win 50-50 balls with that long reach and an impeccable timing of his jumps. Not afraid to lower a shoulder and try to power through the grasp of a tackler. A willing, physical blocker as well.

    • Commitment Date: Nov. 3, 2021 (6th)

    • Prister’s Analysis: A blunt force object who subjects his opponents to a sideline-to-sideline physicality. Wound tight, Bowen brings the lumber with a powerful lower body. First and foremost, however, he’s a quality athlete. Comes off the edge as a pass rusher for Andrean with closing skills, a great use of hands, and natural block destruction. He has a triggering device that sets off his physicality in a blink of an eye.

Offers position flexibility at a likely Will linebacker spot. Can defend against the pass like a Rover with a high degree of explosion out of a backpedal and then comes off the edge with outside linebacker pass-rush skills. Has the innate ability to gear-up his body before impact, quickly loading with a bend of the knees and a drop of the pad level before exploding to and through the target. Only concern is a lack of quality height, but more than makes up for it in multiple ways. No. 2A with the next player listed.

    • Prister’s Analysis: Explosive football player with high-level make-up speed. Swallows ground in pursuit. A graceful athlete with an easy flip of the hips and burst. Jumps routes that don’t seem “jumpable” upon first glance. Upper percentile closing quickness. Uses hands effectively to fend off blocks, which makes him difficult to keep contained.

Shows the ability to peel off one target to assist on another when he detects the flight path of the football. A dynamic kick and punt returner. Could play wide receiver effectively on the next level with his high-pointing ability and graceful ball skills. Still reaching for increased strength and physicality. A bit clunky in his straight-back backpedal, and yet when he turns and runs, his makeup speed is special. A beautiful athlete.

    • Prister’s Analysis: An incredible first-catch for the Irish in the Class of 2023. Took his game from a very promising level as a sophomore, a likely four-star, to a level of talent coveted by the very best programs in the country. Plays with a passion for the game. He will pursue the football until there’s no more football field to cover. Aggression and high effort are a natural offshoot of his makeup.

Whether in a two- or three-point stance off the edge or holding the point of attack in the center of the line on the goal line, Keeley is light on his feet and bouncy. In short space, he flashes quick feet and the ability to handle a running back’s fakes without lunging. Started to really grow into his body as a junior after learning to “unfold” his length. A natural Vyper end with even more potential as a pass rusher than current Irish rush end Isaiah Foskey. Also has some of Foskey’s punt-blocking ability. A true five-star talent.

I really hope our days of “well, we can process them but they will get an ND degree in 2.5 or 3.0 years” doesn’t turn into “well, we can process them but they’ll get some nice credits to take to their mid-major school of choice”

First of all im totally with you, but I really do hope it leads to ND really pushing the low end of their class to EE because of this reason

Why? If you want to compete at the top you have to sacrifice something

If a kid leaves after one year to pursue opportunities/playing time elsewhere, it’s much better he went to ND than another school. I don’t see the issue?

Irish Illustrated and 247Sports have put together this piece in the past and figured it was about time to share the latest, from a big picture perspective, on the Notre Dame targets from the class of 2023. Some answers will be lengthy, while some will be short and to the point. Some will revolve around a commitment and where they may end up, while others will revolve around whether or not they will visit. Others may involve whether or not they will stay on the board much more.

Let’s start with the offensive side of the ball.

Five-star quarterback Dante Moore — My gut feeling is that he picks Notre Dame when all is said and done. Oregon, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M and others are in play, but I haven’t heard anything that makes me think he won’t pick the Fighting Irish. He may visit in June, he might not visit in June. He could commit next week. He could push it out a bit. The timelines is up in the air. Regardless, I think he commits to Notre Dame before he throws his first pass of his senior year.

Five-star running back Richard Young — My gut feeling is that it’s going to take a perfect official visit to pull off the upset. Notre Dame will get its shot on June 13, but it’s going to be a tough one to win. The fact Deland McCullough is able to get him on campus at all is a win, but now let’s see if, Tommy Rees and Marcus Freeman can shock everyone and make a real move.

Four-star running back Justice Haynes — My gut feeling is that I’m close to removing him completely from the Top Target board. Notre Dame is a contender, but it just seems they aren't gaining enough traction compared to other running backs.

Four-star running back Jeremiyah Love — My gut feeling is that Notre Dame could land him when all is said and done. The Irish have been all over him since they offered and from day one I was told to watch the Irish and Michigan. I feel that way as of now and he’ll take official visits to both in June. The dark horse outside the Midwest is Alabama

Four-star running back Jayden Limar — My gut feeling is that when he announces his commitment on May 26, Notre Dame will receive good news. The Fighting Irish, led by Deland McCullough and Tommy Rees, have done a terrific job with this recruitment.

Five-star receiver Jalen Brown — My gut feeling is that I’m just about ready to remove him from the Top Target board. Everyone I speak with has him staying in the state of Florida. I think landing Dante Moore would help the Irish and and I know Moore would recruit Brown hard, and who knows, potentially lead to a visit, but nobody seems to think he’ll leave the Sunshine State as of today.

Five-star receiver Carnell Tate — My gut feeling is that it won’t be Notre Dame when all is said and done. My Crystal Ball remains on Ohio State. Like others, landing Dante Moore would definitely help here, but this seems to be one that will be tough for the Irish to win. They have done everything possible to put themselves in position to win this battle and there is still some optimism, so nothing negative should be said about this staff regardless of how the recruitment plays out. Tommy Rees has been grinding relentlessly for three years and putting in the work. Any optimism seems to be more hope at this point than anything else.

Four-star receiver Dalton Brooks — My gut feeling is that Notre Dame won’t be able to make a real move here. He’ll visit Ohio State for the game vs. the Fighting Irish and that will be a chance for them to make a move with a road victory, but it seems the Buckeyes, Georgia, Oregon, Alabama and Michigan are the ones in better shape today.

Four-star receiver Jaden Greathouse —My gut feeling is that Notre Dame leads in this recruitment. I think Texas remains a contender, as well as a few others, but I think the Irish are in a great spot right now and a great visit in June could lead to good news. The staff is working hard to close next month.

Four-star receiver Rodney Gallagher — My gut feeling is that it’ll be Notre Dame or West Virginia when it comes down to him making a decision. Penn State is also in play, but my sources remain adamant that the Irish and Mountaineers are the two on top. Distance surely helps West Virginia here, as he’s only 30 minutes from campus. This recruitment has gotten difficult to read though. Notre Dame needs a great visit on June 10 to separate themselves. Virginia Tech is a dark horse here and he’s fresh off a visit to Blacksburg. He also has some coaches he is close with there on staff. Again though, for the Irish, landing Dante Moore will help here. They’ve talked recently, which is a positive. As noted, they probably need another great visit to land him.

Four-star receiver Aidan Mizell — My gut feeling is it’ll be an SEC school for Mizell when all is said and done. As of today, there is a lot of smoke around the Florida Gators. We’ll see if Notre Dame can get him on campus. But to add, I think this kid is really, really good. This would be a massive win if the Irish can land a player with his talent.

Four-star receiver Tyler Williams — My gut feeling is that it won’t be the Fighting Irish come decision day. Others seem to be in better shape including Georgia and Clemson. Alabama has turned up the heat, so they’re a threat. Chansi Stuckey gives Notre Dame a shot, but they lack optimism right now, which is exactly how I feel.

Four-star receiver Rico Flores — My gut feeling is that this could be my next Crystal Ball pick for Notre Dame. I think they are doing a great job with this recruitment and could separate themselves with a strong official visit in June leading up to his July 3 commitment date.

Four-star receiver Joshua Manning — My gut feeling is that Tommy Rees gives Notre Dame a shot. He and Manning really hit it off recently. He needs to learn more about the school and get on campus to give the Irish a real shot. He’s also an academic kid from an academic family, so if they continue pressing and turning up the heat, Notre Dame could be a dark horse contender.

Four-star receiver Malik Elzy — My gut feeling is that Notre Dame is in play, but not yet pushing. I think others are in better shape to land him strictly from the perspective of showing more love, but it’ll be interesting to see if the Irish go all in to land him. My guess, as of today, is that he lands elsewhere.

Three-star receiver Ronan Hanafin — My gut feeling is that this could be one of my next Crystal Ball predictions for Notre Dame. The Irish want four or five receivers in the class and I’m told without question that he’s a take for this staff. Notre Dame likes him a lot and to be honest, staffers on both sides of the ball feel this way.

Five-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola — My gut feeling is that Notre Dame won’t win this battle. The Irish are trying and could snag one of his official visits, but right now there isn’t a ton of optimism that he’ll be Irish when all is said and done. We’ll see if Harry Hiestand can work his magic.

Four-star offensive lineman Charles Jagusah — My gut feeling is that he’ll pick Notre Dame when it comes time for him to make a decision. He’s a great fit, Harry Hiestand badly wants him and there is a ton of mutual interest. Michigan is the biggest competition for Notre Dame.

Four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling — My gut feeling is that he’ll pick Notre Dame when it comes time for him to make a decision. He’s a great fit, Harry Hiestand badly wants him and there is a ton of mutual interest. The difference between him and Charles Jagusah is that I don’t have a Crystal Ball pick in yet. I think that is close to changing.

Three-star offensive tackle Elijah Paige — My gut feeling is that if there is room, I like Notre Dame to land him. The Irish are doing well here. But we’ll see how things progress.

    45COMMENTS
Three-star offensive guard Joe Otting — My gut feeling is Notre Dame will turn up the heat this summer and put themselves in a great spot. He will camp and if he performs as expected, I think that’s exactly what will happen. The staff already likes him a lot and thinks he’s one of the more underrated guys they are recruiting, so he could be someone that moves up the rankings in the coming months.

It's not upsetting to me if someone leaves after one year - they either weren't a fit or thought they had better opportunities elsewhere.

It would be more upsetting to me if someone like Litchfield Avalon - who we all probably thought would never play here at one year - was effectively processed after one or two years. Now he's processed after 3 years with a degree, goes to Rice for senior year, has an ND degree, good rep for the school, etc. Would stink to see kids like that sold on the "40 year decision" not have a scholarship after 2 years instead of 3 cuz we want to take 29 a year.

Lucky Charms from tonight...the note about Braylon is pretty interesting

Here are tonight’s Lucky Charms, a Monday-Thursday nightly insider notes article on Notre Dame football recruiting.

*** A report from On3’s Sam Spiegelman last Friday noted that Round Rock (Texas) Stony Point’s Braylon James, a Notre Dame commit who ranks as the No. 95 player and No. 15 wide receiver according to the 2023 On3 Consensus, was expected to take an official visit to TCU this upcoming weekend. While discussion about James taking the visit to Fort Worth was accurate, Blue & Gold sources say that the four-star playmaker is not going to take the trip.

Could the plans end up being back on? Sure, but again, that’s not what we’re being told. This Notre Dame staff has drawn a line in the sand — for the lack of a better term — on its commits taking official visits elsewhere.

As far as discussion on James potentially reclassifying to the 2022 class, there’s still no update on that at this time. We’re working under the assumption that James will remain in the 2023 class, but there’s still a chance that he enrolls in South Bend this summer. It’s quite interesting to have talks to James potentially visiting elsewhere on one hand with discussion on another hand of him graduating high school a year early. Regardless, we consider James solid with his Notre Dame pledge.

*** There has been some chatter about Notre Dame potentially turning up the heat on Maize (Kan.) High’s Avery Johnson, the No. 222 recruit and No. 12 signal-caller per the 2023 On3 Consensus. That’s something we’re told is not the case, and Johnson essentially confirmed that over the weekend. He told On3 that Kansas State, Oregon, Virginia and Washington are the schools recruiting him the hardest.

Johnson is expected to make his commitment to a school by the end of June. Notre Dame offered him last summer after he camped for offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, but it’s never felt like Johnson was a major priority for the staff.

*** In the 2024 class, Saline (Mich.) High’s CJ Carr, the No. 23 player and No. 5 quarterback per the On3 Consensus, is a top target for the Irish. Rees and Co. have been recruiting the four-star passer hard.

“Some of my top schools are Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Georgia,” Carr said at the Elite 11 Regional in Nashville over the weekend. “There’s definitely a few few other ones in that mix that recently offered me so I’m excited to grow all those relationships.”

Carr spoke highly of the Fighting Irish.

“Even looking at this next 2023 class, that’s a really attractive group as the No. 1 class in the country,” Carr said. “I think that’s an attractive piece. I also really like what Tommy Rees is doing with the offense and how he runs his practices and just the competitive energy that Notre Dame brings.”

This is major college football. Scholarships are not guaranteed for 4 years, 3 years, or 2 years — just 1 year at a time.

Litchfield seems like a good dude but I’d love to see players of his caliber move on before 3 years in exchange of a national championship

I agree, especially since he was 38 years old when he enrolled. I understand going back to college for one year as a midlife crisis type of thing but 3 seems a bit much.

The whole 4 for 40, academics, ND network, “what are you doing after football” thing is going to ring way too hollow if we start shipping too many people out without a degree. That seems to be still winning us a lot of recruiting tie breakers right now. Whole thing falls apart if you don’t walk out with a degree
