Even if he ran it properly, it’s still a 3 yard loss at best because Coogan missed the guy shooting the gap and it was a slow developing play.

Should’ve just ran power with Estime and tried to grind it out. The misdirection run was a dumb call, regardless of execution.

Too many of our coaches are from Ohio and can't count past 10.

Duke is going to be infuriating. that's about it.

Not sure, I just assumed all is fair in the NIL era, or maybe if he gets his degree?

The QB from NMSU isn’t bad either, probably not a true NFL prospect and could take the same path as Hartman, bigger stage, pro style offense.

Just perusing who could potentially be out there.

Am I mis-remembering or did last year Freeman mention they were hiring a gameday manager to manage key decisions on gameday?

Could have swore something like that. But between 10 men on the field, the delay of game on the punt, and the misuse of timeouts on OSU’s final drive, it’s clear the coaches need help on gameday

i was so so angry Sat night, my wife was not happy w/ me

i don't have much to re-hash besides what was a very depressing and humorous 15 or so pages

my biggest positive takeaways from the game is that we have an elite Oline (they seemed to really gell together) and probably the best CB tandem in the country. What both groups did is truly impressive Sat night

for all the complaining about our Dline not getting much of a pass rush, the OSU Dline didn't either (much less than ours) and they couldn't run it much either besides the one big run. Their 5star dline did almost nothing till the last 2 JT snaps which were very impressive

I watched that game and thought ND was the better team (I didn't feel that way last year) and it was a horrible shame how they lost. There is enough blame for everyone. I was disappointed in Hartman, especially if it's true that the first down run that loss 5 yards was his fault. I really didn't like the Offensive gameplan even though it was effective at the end of the game.

The officiating was awful, just plain awful

    D3's Intel piece

Hey y’all, we are busy collecting recruiting Intel from the Ohio State game this weekend. As we get more, we will update this thread. Here are some tidbits to know.

*** The day got kicked off strong when 2025 Bryant (Ark.) High School running back Daniel Anderson announced his commitment prior to the game kicking off. This was a decision that we were anticipating coming in… in fact we had a commit piece ready for it earlier this week. It was more a question of when Anderson would announce, not if he would. Before the season, Notre Dame really liked what they saw from Anderson when he camped with the staff. They continued to do their homework, kept contact and decided to really push for him. Notre Dame has been the leader for some time. Over the last couple of months, Anderson had been visiting several other schools. Going on those trips solidified for Anderson that Notre Dame was where he needed to be. He was searching for a similar feeling but nothing compared to the connection he has with the program and the staff. The most recent visit wasn’t the deciding factor… in actuality, this had been decided upon prior to making the trip.

*** The other commitment was from 2025 Highland Home (Al.) High School pass rusher CJ May, who was a slight surprise when he announced his decision after the game. Funny enough, I had actually told Bryan on Friday that we should be keeping a close eye on May coming into the weekend. Leading up to the visit, Notre Dame had done a tremendous job. You could tell by recent conversations that his timeline was beginning to move up, which was obviously positive for the program. I would have called Notre Dame the leader before the visit but really what sealed the deal was 2025 quarterback commit Deuce Knight. The talented signal caller deserves a big assist on this one. The two are very close friends and the minute that Knight committed, May became his top target. May will not shy away from that fact either. Knight is a big reason why he made that decision.

What impact can a big time quarterback have on a class? We are already learning less than a week after he committed.

*** One of the absolute priority recruits on campus was 2025 Chicago (Ill.) Simeon defensive end Christopher Burgess, who is an elite talent and only an hour and a half away from South Bend. Burgess has been high on Notre Dame for some time but he has absolutely been keeping his options open. The last couple of months have been about the Chicago star visiting different schools and developing a deeper understanding for the schools who really interest him. The next step in the process was to get his mother on campuses at these various schools. This weekend was her first trip with Burgess, which was a great sign. I’m told that Notre Dame did everything right with Burgess, which has been a consistent thing. I was also told that his mom LOVED the visit. She is very concerned with education, and a good environment that Burgess will flourish in. It appears she was very happy with how the coaches presented their vision for her son.

*** For the second time, 2025 Wautoma (Wisc.) High School offensive tackle Michael Roeske made the trip back to South Bend. He had last been on campus this offseason when he camped at Notre Dame. He has remained in very good communication with Joe Rudolph and the rest of the staff. Heading into the visit, Wisconsin and Notre Dame were considered the top two schools for Roeske. He spoke fondly of the staff on the trip, as well as the fans and energy around the campus. One important thing for Roeske was to have a real conversation about his rehab (tore his ACL and meniscus in his right knee a couple of games ago). He was able to talk to the staff about it and they made it apparent that they are still going to recruit him heavily. In fact, he said that having that conversation really solidified how highly they think of him. Roeske was able to bring his father and uncle to campus with him. Both enjoyed their time, especially his uncle who is a lifelong Notre Dame fan. If the staff opts to stay on him and push, I believe they will be in it until the very end.

*** One of the more interesting visits was from 2025 Omaha (Neb.) Westside linebacker Christian Jones, who had never been on campus. By all accounts, his first trip was fantastic. Jones is the teammate of 2024 Notre Dame linebacker commit Teddy Rezac, who accompanied him to campus. Despite being a really big recruit, Jones has been prioritizing his season and recruiting has taken a major backseat. Just getting him on campus was a major step, especially with him being able to see the campus and feel the energy around the Notre Dame community. If I had to peg leaders, Nebraska and Notre Dame would be my picks but it is very early. The recruiting process is just getting started for Jones.

*** Speaking of outstanding linebackers, 2025 Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s star Anthony Sacca also made the return trip to campus. In the past, he has spoken a lot about Al Golden, who he has known for a long time since he played with his father Tony Sacca at Penn State. It was great to hear Sacca talk about Marcus Freeman and Max Bullough after this trip, which he said he spent a lot of time with. Penn State is obviously the big competition for him. Notre Dame just quietly keeps plugging along and building more momentum. Seeing College Gameday and the game atmosphere were two of the things Sacca talked about most. He really, really enjoyed his time this weekend.

*** Now that Knight is committed in the 2025 class, Notre Dame can now get their eyes on some top 2026 signal callers more. One of the few who have been offered is Lake Mary (Fla.) High School quarterback Noah Grubbs, who made his second trip to campus on Saturday. Through four games as a sophomore, Grubbs has thrown for 23 touchdowns. The 6-4, 215-pound passer is very, very good. Grubbs made this trip with his father and private quarterback trainer. Each of them had a great overall visit. Grubbs talked about his chance to talk a lot with Coach Freeman and Gino Guidugli. He said that he had a really crazy moment when Coach Freeman walked up to him and his trainer before the game and said, “I’m very happy and excited you came here, now let’s get you to stay here.” Notre Dame is making a great early impression on Grubbs.

    (UPDATED 3:45 PM)

*** A player who isn’t often talked about enough is 2024 American Fork (Utah) High School safety Davis Andrews, which is understandable to a degree. One, there hasn’t been a ton of updates on him. Notre Dame has been in a great spot for some time now. Also with Andrews planning to take a LDS mission after high school, he wouldn’t in theory be available until 2026. Still the staff loves him. I was told that the visit over the weekend was “absolutely unbelievable.” I was also told that Andrews has set a commitment date for October 2nd. Notre Dame is viewed as the heavy favorite going into that decision.

    (UPDATED 7:45 PM)

*** I had the chance to chat with Venus Taylor, who is the mother of star 2025 Geneva (Ill.) Community wide receiver Talyn Taylor. He is an absolute priority in the class and the Notre Dame staff continued to make that very known this weekend. They were extremely complimentary of the Irish coaching and recruiting staffs, who they say have continued to make them feel at home every time they come. They described the game as electric and hard fought and have a deep belief in what Coach Freeman is building. As of now, they are staying firm on their timeline. They plan on taking official visits after the season and really getting as much information as possible. From there, it will be Talyn’s decision. I believe that Notre Dame and Michigan are the two early favorites but that can obviously change.

*** Another talented 2025 wide receiver is Scottsdale (Ariz.) Notre Dame Prep standout Cooper Perry. As I’ve said in the past, Notre Dame is in a very good spot with the Arizona pass catcher. His grandfather was a student at Notre Dame and he grew up with a fandom for the program. Perry described the visit as “seriously awesome” and noted the “crazy atmosphere. If the staff pushes, I believe they are the frontrunner for Perry. He continues to be very high on the staff and program.

**Trigger Warning for Doom and Gloom**

What happened on that series was literally the worst case scenario.

We had 1st and 10 from the 34 with 3 minutes left and OSU has 1 Timeout. Literally one first down wins the game. Your options HAVE to be one of the following three: 1. Pound Estime three times; live with the result, probably punting back to them around one minute left from the 40 or so, which means they are around their own 20 with no TOs and a little over a minute, 2. Run Estime twice and try to win it with (most likely) with one pass on a third and medium call, 3. Run your normal offense; get crazy and run play action to Evans in the flat for 8 yards, it's one first to win the game!

They didn't want to do #3 because they were worried about a turnover. First, Hartman has ZERO interceptions in 19.75 quarters to that point, but they didn't trust him there. Second, even if they get an interception, it's a short field with 2:30+ left and we have two timeouts, so if they score a TD its going to be with probably more clock than 0:01.

Instead we run a weird double RB PRO that loses 4 yards. BUT WHATS WORSE, is once you have 2nd and 14, you've got two options. We're either throwing twice and getting that first down to win the game, or we're running twice and burning their last timeout and :40 more clock after that. How they ran a screen pass then a run is BAFFLING. And THEN they committed an infraction to push the punt back five yards.

Leaving that series 4th and 17 with OSU still having a timeout was literally worse than just giving them the ball with an INT on first down. Baffling.
