Pretty sure they are. Kid has been coveted for a long time. Thankfully he grew up Irish and Mickens knows how to croot.

He is. I’m guessing the longer it stays that way the better. Only thing I can guess is Elston got back in his ear big time when he seemed lost and is at least stringing it out.

    Donovan Edwards update

West Bloomfield (Mich.) high school four-star running back Donovan Edwards is among the nation’s elite football prospects in the class of 2021. The 5-11, 190-pounder is ranked as the No. 3 running back in the country and No. 37 overall player this cycle per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. 247Sports ranks him even higher as the No. 2 back nationally and No. 22 overall talent in the class. Edwards offer list is now over 40 from the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Auburn, LSU, USC and many others.

So, where do things stand with the Fighting Irish? Can Notre Dame land him?

Here’s the latest we’ve gathered from a few sources connected to this recruitment.

Last week, Edwards was on a Zoom call with Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, running backs coach Lance Taylor, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, and special teams coordinator Brian Polian. Also on the call were Edwards’ father Kevin Edwards, and his high school coach Ron Bellamy.

From what Irish Illustrated has gathered, the call couldn’t have gone better for Notre Dame. We’ve been informed that Edwards was really engaged, as talkative as he’s ever been in the past, as he’s typically more on the reserved side, and came across extremely comfortable with the entire Fighting Irish coaching staff. We were told he was vocal about his excitement and appreciation for the call, and quality time with the staff.

For Notre Dame, this call was about continuing to build that bond with Edwards and making it known how coveted he is by the coaches in South Bend. That part, we’re told, is easy due to the fact that he’s a terrific football player and student, so the transition to Notre Dame would be an easy one. However, the key to this call was about making sure he knows that the Notre Dame staff is best suited to take his game to the next level.

Everyone knows that Edwards is going to make his next team better. He’s an elite back, so as soon as you put the ball in his hands, he’s going to make plays. But Notre Dame believes it will be able to make him a better player, while making sure that he is ready physically and mentally for a long career in the National Football League. It’s all about development. You can’t be the same back leaving college as you are upon arrival. That is part of their pitch to him from what we’ve gathered. Between Kelly, Taylor and Rees working with him on the field, and then Matt Balis and the strength staff helping him grow in the offseason, Notre Dame believes it can ensure tremendous growth year in and year out. That’s what their message is to Edwards and that was laid out during this latest call.

Taylor had success coaching Christian McCaffrey, a player that was dominant in college and has been even more successful in the NFL, and helped him at Stanford become the player he is today. We’re told Taylor believes Edwards and McCaffrey are similar in terms of skill-sets and has shown Edwards that using plenty fo film. In addition, we’re told Taylor and the Notre Dame coaches have talked about how similar Edwards is to Alvin Kamara and Saquon Barkley, guys that can be used in a variety of ways, and how he falls into that category of a new-wave running back, one that doesn’t need to just line up in the backfield and get 25 carries a game to make a true impact. We’ve told Notre Dame has been able to display to Edwards that he’ll be used creatively all over the field to truly utilize his playmaking skills.

At this point, there is a strong belief that Notre Dame is in the top group. Nobody is claiming the Irish as his leader yet, but the Fighting Irish have done a great job of climbing the leaderboard and putting themselves in striking distance. In talking to others closely connected to this recruitment, others mentioned as a top contenders include Michigan, Georgia, Texas A&M and Florida. The Fighting Irish will continue to have strong dialogue with Edwards, week in and week out, and the staff is working hard to make sure he gets back on campus as much as possible this year ahead of a decision that could come later in the process.

won't believe anything in this recruitment until he signs...this kid is all over the place

    Gold Standard

*** Notre Dame is continuing to work on Council Bluffs (Iowa) Lewis Central School’s

    Thomas Fidone
, the nation’s No. 3 tight end and No. 62 overall player per Rivals. He has never been on campus, but it’s a priority to him to get up to South Bend once the dead period lifts. His top six schools are Iowa, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Penn State, and I’d probably throw Alabama in there to make it a top seven.
*** He has been to Iowa and Nebraska on several occasions, so getting out to the other five schools is important. However, Fidone told Omaha.com last week that if the dead period is moved through September, then it will probably be his “last straw.” At that point, he’d likely go ahead and make his decision, and Iowa and Nebraska would be the heavy favorites.

*** From a Notre Dame perspective, getting him on campus is everything. There has even been conversations about hoping Fidone will drive up to Notre Dame to take his own tour of campus so he can at least experience the university. The longer Fidone stretches his recruitment out, the better Notre Dame’s chances are, but there is a catch. If things stretch into September and hasn’t been on a Notre Dame visit, then it seems he’ll shut his recruitment down, which would be bad news for the Irish.

*** My sources on the Notre Dame side of things are optimistic, but I still feel that Iowa and Nebraska are the tier one schools in his recruitment, while the Irish and others have to play catch up. He was going to visit for Notre Dame’s pro day during the spring and officially visit in June. The coronavirus dead period has really hurt Notre Dame in this recruitment.

*** Georgia is considered the leader for Napa (Calif.) High tight end

    Brock Bowers
, and my sources believe that as well. Notre Dame is likely among his top two or three choices, but there is a lot of confidence from the Bulldogs’ side of things. Oregon and Washington are still heavily involved as well. Like with Fidone, if Bowers decides soon, it’s probably not good news for Notre Dame, even though he has been to South Bend. He seems to be taking his time, but Bowers could pop this summer.
*** Notre Dame is making its pitch to Bowers, which has been impactful on his parents. His visit in March, the week before visits were shut down due to coronavirus, went very well too. He even visited Michigan that same week, but the Wolverines were eliminated from contention. If Bowers decides to stay closer to home, he has plenty of options. If he does want to venture out, then it does look like it’ll still be Georgia.

Notre Dame fans who follow my updates shouldn’t be surprised that I feel both Bowers’ and Fidone’s recruitments aren’t trending Notre Dame’s way. But the rest of The Gold Standard should excite the Irish faithful.

*** The Irish staff had been evaluating

    Terrance Ferguson
    and
    Erik Olsen
from Littleton (Colo.) Heritage, a pair of four-star recruits, for a while. From what I’ve heard, the staff liked Ferguson, but he was more of a wide receiver than tight end and would’ve had hard time getting caught up in his recruitment. Olsen may be a better long-term tight end recruit, and the Irish decided to make a move on him by offering a scholarship last week. Notre Dame seems to have made an instant impact in his recruitment, so I’d put the Irish near the top of his list.
*** The Irish hope that Olsen takes his time with the process, because he has never been to campus. We’ve seen prospects commit to Notre Dame without having taken visits to South Bend, but generally speaking, visits are very important and can change the tide of a recruitment quickly. Olsen does want to stay patient but also not lose a spot at his favorite school. Unless Bowers or Fidone want in or the Irish target a new tight end prospect and he commits, then Olsen doesn’t have to worry about losing a spot at Notre Dame.

*** I actually used to cover the Colorado Buffaloes and still have connections in the Denver area. Here is what one source with direct knowledge of Olsen as a player and young man said to me: “He’s a blue-collar type tight end. He’ll pancake block you on a run play and run by you the next. He’s humble and quiet off the field but can turn on a switch once he gets between the lines and welcomes contact. If I were to compare him to any professional player, it would have to be [San Francisco 49ers tight end] George Kittle, as he is a punishing blocker and great route runner.”

*** Bowers, Fidone and Olsen are the offered tight end prospects on the 2021 board. If any of them do commit, they’d be in addition to Hartwell (Ga.) Hart County tight end

    Cane Berrong
. I was a bit concerned about the status of his commitment to the Irish after Chip Long’s departure, but his pledge is stronger than ever. Berrong recently had a “virtual visit” with Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, tight ends coach John McNulty and recruiting coordinator Brian Polian. All is very well with the four-star prospect and the Fighting Irish.
*** The numbers for Notre Dame and tight end recruiting in the 2021 class are very simple. If the staff has the opportunity to take a tight end prospect who they feel is a difference maker, they’ll be happy to take him. If not, then they’re still excited with just Berrong. Notre Dame did just take two tight ends in 2020, but the numbers may not be as deep as you may think for the Irish here.

*** After this season, Brock Wright will exhaust his eligibility, and some people I've talked to believe that Tommy Tremble will declare for the NFL Draft if he has a strong season. That would leave the Irish with George Takacs (redshirt sophomore in 2021), Kevin Bauman, Michael Mayer and Berrong. Notre Dame likes to use a lot of two tight end sets and having more bodies here would be ideal. I never like to speculate on transfers, but if someone like Mayer does live up to expectations and passes up someone with less eligibility than him, you have to wonder if they’d look to go elsewhere. All in all, I think it would be wise for Notre Dame to take a second 2021 tight end if the numbers allow for it and if they like the prospect enough.

    2022 Tight End Recruiting
*** While the coaching staff is still working on the 2021 class, it’s never too early to get started on the class in the following cycle. The Irish already have three tight end offers out, which includes Dickinson (Texas) High’s

    Donovan Green
. Notre Dame offered Green earlier this year, but I have a hard time seeing him siding with the Irish. The Irish have a much better shot with the other two tight ends John McNulty offered in May.
*** I’m very close to placing a FutureCast pick for Milton (Ga.) High’s

    Jack Nickel
to commit to Notre Dame. I’m pretty conservative with my picks and tossing one out to a 2022 prospect this early isn’t like me, but I probably will do so this summer if this recruitment continues in a positive direction. If this were a normal summer, Nickel would probably have camped at Notre Dame and then committed to the Irish, much like we saw with Berrong last year.

*** Nickel’s father, Paul, played at Stanford, but he also was recruited by Notre Dame and nearly ended up with the Fighting Irish. The family loves Notre Dame and enjoyed their visit for the USC game last October. Nickel has family in the Midwest, and I’m hearing that he may take a trip up to see his folks and also take a self-tour of Notre Dame. If Notre Dame wants Nickel, then I fully expect him to be a part of the Irish’s 2022 class.

*** McNulty also dished out an offer to Pilot Mountain (N.C.) East Surry’s

    Benji Gosnell
the same day he offered Nickel (May 6). I do think Gosnell will be a tougher get, but he expressed strong interest in the Irish during my recent conversation with him. Florida, Georgia, Ohio State and some other high-level programs have also offered Gosnell.
Coach’s Take: Napa Head Coach Richie Wessman On Brock Bowers
    On Bowers in general …

“He’s a hard-worker, instinctive, incredible athlete. He leads by example. He’s a phenomenal tool to game plan around because he can do so much at a high level.”

On Notre Dame coaches, who have visited Napa High …

“They’re great guys, great coaches, very professional. They do a great job of representing Notre Dame.”

On Bowers as a young man …

“He’s very intelligent. He has an old school of mentality; he just wants to work hard and get better every day. It’s great to have him around because you never have to worry about a thing with him. You say something once, and he’ll do it the best he possibly can.”

On when he first knew Bowers was a big-time prospect …

“The first time I started seeing him in the weight room, him moving around and his build, I knew he was going to be special. That was February of 2019, the first workout I had as their coach. But there was a moment where he truly let me know the level he was going to be at. In the preseason, we were having a scrimmage in practice, and it was like a video game – he hit the stiff arm button, then the spin button, then the juke button and then the speed burst button. That was when I knew he was going to be big time, big time.”

Coach’s Take: Lewis Central Head Coach Justin Kammrad On Thomas Fidone
On Fidone’s growth in high school …

“As a sophomore for us we knew that he was going to be successful. We were playing a lot of juniors and seniors, and he was the only sophomore that played for us. That was because of his talent level and his upside that we knew. Last year, he was going to be a big part and a focal point of what we were going to do in the passing game and everyone else knew that.

“We had to find ways to sort of move him around to try and keep defenses from trying to bracket coverage him and double coverage him. There were times during games where that was no possibility. He had to learn to grow up real fast and know he may not get the catches, but there’s a lot of other things in the football game he can do and we asked him to do a lot of things. We started moving him down to play some tight end inline to block some guys. We started getting into the I-formation, which we hadn’t been in for probably five years. So asking him to do a lot of stuff put a lot on his plate. He responded very well to that and understanding that the game is evolving, and we’ve got to try and do things with him.

“He’s a competitor, he wants to be successful, he wants the ball. Now, it’s just taking that game to the next level. The little ins and outs, ‘How can I get better at the little things to make myself better than even I am?’

“He has that mindset. He always asks questions to get better. He believes that he’s good, but he knows he can get better. I think when someone becomes complacent it makes it a lot harder and he’s not like that which is why he’s going to be successful at the next level as well.

    On Fidone’s best traits …

“He’s extremely long and athletic. Once he gets more experience playing inside slot and tight end, he’ll blossom into an even better player and prospect. For us, he’s never played that, so he’ll be developed better with another year under his belt. He’s a kid who has always been very athletic – he runs track, state high jumper and obviously a basketball player as well. He’s played baseball in the past too. He’s a really all-around athlete.”

    On Fidone’s recruitment …

“Nebraska and Iowa have been to our campus quite a bit. Coach Harbaugh from Michigan came down for a basketball game. A lot of the Midwest schools are intriguing to him because they use their tight ends and develop them really well, including Notre Dame. Obviously, the SEC is interesting with the amount of talent they produce every year.”

On Tommy Rees, who offered Fidone after visiting Lewis Central in January …

“He’s a really good guy. I was impressed with his demeanor and what he was looking for in a tight end. They were there to watch practice to see how big he was and see if he moved as well as he shows on tape. I liked how Coach Rees approached that visit. Sometimes guys just come in and want to talk. He was more checking out Thomas to see if he’s a guy Notre Dame wants. Then I believe Thomas called him that night about the offer.”

On Fidone as a student …

“He does a really good job. He stays on top of everything, and I believe he takes some of our college dual-credit classes. He wants to go into medicine, but I don’t know at what capacity, but it’s valuable for him in looking at schools. Academically, you have to be in good standing to be able to look into that.”

Analysis: Ultra-aggressive interior offensive lineman. Powerful in short space and relentless approach to blocking defenders. Plays in full-time attack mode. Quickness off the snap and a fundamental blocker. Nice lateral slide as run blocker. Excellent concentration of power upon contact. Feet can be sedentary as pass blocker. Needs to fine-tune his weight. Needs to make a second block as opposed to pouncing on an opponent already on the ground, which is unproductive and an unnecessary cheap shot.

Analysis: Raw football player with a great frame, size and movement that could allow for success, more likely as an interior defensive lineman than in space on the edge. Quick first step with closing speed. Shows knowledge of how to keep outside shoulder free, yet reactive as opposed to proactive, which displays his inexperience. Change of direction can be stiff. Playing against poor competition, not as dominant as he should be, although his experience in the game is limited. Should be too physically advanced for his senior year competition. A project worth the investment.

Analysis: Makes difficult catches look easy. Plows his way through second and third levels of defense. As a blocker, plays with a wide blocking base and aggressiveness that makes it difficult to get off his block. Shows some maneuverability in traffic with a bit of an unorthodox galloping gait. Very-good-to-great hands. Inconsistent suddenness off the snap. Probably not as tall as listed. Actual length of frame could be a detriment, but has skills to compensate.

Analysis: High-level vertical skills. Vision in traffic but limited wiggle in space. Doesn’t always play to his speed on the offensive side of the football. Twitchier defensively than he is with the football in his hands, despite a stronger background on the offensive side. Shows natural instincts defensively breaking out of his backpedal, leveraging receivers against the sideline, turn-and-run ability and finds the football in the air while maintaining balance during his jump. Would be rated in the top five if projected at cornerback, but Deion Colzie de-commitment and verbal commitments from Philip Riley and Ryan Barnes likely keeps him at wide receiver. Current ranking does not reflect where I think he’ll end up. I expect him to move up this list during his senior season of high school.

Explosive downhill run defender with a quick first step upon diagnosis. Although slightly built based upon his overall body mass, he’s not small. He’s put together with a lean body mass, which shows by his high degree of physicality. Gets into lower body of ball carriers. Light on his feet with excellent change of direction. Four-star qualities, football instincts.

Analysis: A true quick-twitch athlete with first-step suddenness despite body mass. Strength and pad level stand out. Uses his hands as weapons. Great motor. Stays square to the line of scrimmage, which makes him difficult to navigate. Possesses short-space quickness; needs to continue working on side-to-side mobility. How well he can cover ground to his left and right will determine overall effectiveness because other fundamental pieces are in place. A pillar in the middle of the line.

Analysis: Strong, long and agile with what looks like natural strength. A prototypical strongside defensive end who uses a forceful rip move. Packs a punch and is a menacing force in pursuit of the quarterback. Also shows a disciplined game as a contain man on the wide edge. Avoids false reactions to running backs. Doesn’t give in to fakes and jukes. Doesn’t always have the best get-off on the snap of the football. Still a rawness to his game. Long-term upside is great. There’s been speculation of a de-commitment, but it hasn’t officially happened yet.

    • Commitment Date: June 6, 2020 (11th)
Analysis: Immediately jumped off the film to disprove his three-star ranking, which should change during his senior season at Quince Orchard. Offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma were further proof after Mike Elston’s visit in December that this is an elite talent. Capable of playing all four secondary positions, Barnes presses aggressively from a cornerback position, puts powerful hands on receivers after the snap and physically re-directs them out of their preferred get-off…and Barnes still has a ways to go strength-wise. Physical despite playing 15 pounds from his peak weight in college. Cornerback-quick acceleration out of backpedal. Avoids false steps. Plays with outstanding bounce. Joins Justin Walters as most underrated three-star-ranked players in the class.

Analysis: Excellent initial quickness despite expanding size. Plays with wide base, balance and forward lean but doesn’t lunge. Best in short space, which projects more to the right side than the left. Has a tendency to stand tall after initial contact. Needs to work on knee bend. Still growing into his body and learning how to control his mass. An emphasis on conditioning and movement will be key to his overall productivity on the next level. Listed as a tackle coming out of high school, Fisher has grown into a prototype guard.

Analysis: Press-coverage corner with length who has excelled against quality competition. Well-coached fundamentals include turning his head to play the football. Uses his length to make up ground. High-level ball skills/timing. Doesn’t give in to false movements. Excellent change of direction and balance/center of gravity. The length and versatility to play both cornerback positions or safety. Vastly better than his current composite ranking. When you play as effectively against quality competition as Riley has, he deserves to be higher than No. 313.

Analysis: Unique and somewhat unorthodox talent with short backswing/throwing motion, quick release and dart-like throws that frequently catch DBs unprepared for football’s accelerated arrival to WR. Gets more length out of throws than one might think upon release. Throws an extremely catchable ball. Great mobility within the pocket. Legitimate running threat. Flashes some Pat Mahomes-like ad-lib skills when the pocket breaks down. He’s the artful dodger under pressure who creates big pass plays out of collapsing pockets. Difference-maker; wish he was a bit longer.

Fisher is so under rated. His combination of size, strength and footwork is ridiculous. Saw him play last year and as a junior he looked like a college kid playing against middle schoolers. Barring any sort of serious injury he’s Ronnie Stanley 2.0

I will give this a shot. My ranking is based on how they will do in college. In parenthesis is the type of talent I believe they are

    1. Buchner (top 25)
    2. Fischer (top 25)
    3. Lo Styles (top 100)
    4. Gabe Rubio (top 150)
    5. Ryan Barnes (top 150)
    6. Philip Riley (top 150)
    7. Abiara (top 150)
    8. Berrong (top 150)
    9. Justin Walters
    10. Coogan
    11. Onye

I agree that we don't have as many top 100 players in this class yet, but who knows. The class is only half full at this point. If they land Spindler and/or Colzie/Thorton or someone like Edwards, it could really lift this class to the next level.

totally agree with this, that's why he's a legit 5* in my opinion and the #2 player in our class. I wouldn't trade Rucci/Milum/Spindler for him. Of the last 3 Oline classes, the only one I have ahead of him is Tosh Baker. Baker to me has top 5 overall draft potential and is a bigger version of Ronnie Stanley, same basketball background as well

ND sent out an email telling faculty, students, and staff that even personal travel out of the area isn’t allowed this fall. How they even think they’ll enforce that is an entirely different question, but it goes to that same issue. They aren’t going to let visitors come to campus from all over the country

This is also Kelly taking off a few games. Great way to showcase the coach in waiting to see what kind of response they get.

Backer will be a COVID hotspot, guaranteed. You'd be nuts to step inside that place any time this season. It's a biohazard risk on its own even during normal times.
