I agree with this. It's entirely possible that there were a lot of open receivers downfield that I couldn't see on TV, but short of that my only major issue with Wimbush was the crappy throws behind the line of scrimmage and at this point I put that on the coaches. That one screen play in the redzone that went for a loss of 3 because Finke had to go to his knees to catch it resulted in Kelly going for it on 4th down while up by 6 in the 4th quarter. It worked out but jesus thats bad. Also I think Vanderbilt just had a good defensive game plan. They took away the deep throws and for the most part contained Wimbush on the ground. I actually do think Kelly should have gone to Book, not because Wimbush was playing poorly but because Book's game was a better matchup for what Vandy was giving and they needed to be knocked off rhythm.
As much as I’d love to give Vandy’s DC credit for the gameplan, it wasn’t much different from most teams we’ve played since Miami put the book out on Wimbush last year. Soft corners, with one high safety to combat the deep ball. Stack the box to limit the run. Force Wimbush to beat you with short and intermediate throws, which he can’t do. Our response to that seems to be WR screens, which we look like a HS team at times trying to execute. What this offense needs is someone dynamic in the slot that can make a difference with the ball in his hands. As much as we want to pile on Wimbush for his lack of ability - which is fair - this offense lacks weapons that teams need to account for.
He won't be in the slot much, but I can't wait for Dexter to get back. Every time he touches it he's a threat to break it. Hopefully we can find creative ways to get it to him.
Would be nice to have a super fast receiver like Braden Lenzy in the slot. Or maybe a Dexter Williams.
With the feet of wimbush the idea should just be more run pass options and moving the pocket even more. wimbush is fine on the run. It usually limits the progressions he needs to go through and it actually forces the corners and the deep safety to commit as you allow plays to develop even longer. The deep ball of wimbush is acceptable-decent and he has plenty of range so exending plays is a good idea
I’m super excited to have Dexter back too because I think he’s the most talented back we’ve had since Prosise. But let’s be honest here, Kelly fucking hates him. I’d be shocked if he gets 15+ touches per game.
Id sign up for 10 touches a game to be quite honest. But with Tony Jones, Wimbush and Dex all getting about 10 carries with a few Jones catches and a few amstrong catches im good. That gives acceptable options
Our biggest problem is consistency on offense and it has been a problem for 9 years. The home run shots last year masked the problem
so when our good friend, Brian, retires after completing an undefeated, national championship-winning season, who is on your shortlist? your list may include tiers if you so desire. i love you guys RISE and STRIKE!
I honestly have no clue. Urban is now toxic, Saban ain't happening, Dabo is going to Bama if they want him, Franklin seems obvious but he's still not completely proven in my eyes. Peterson is not moving east. I'm honestly clueless who we chase is Kelly if gone on a good or bad note after this year.
ND is going to be ND regardless of the coach. There was a stat this weekend with all the high profiles this year. Their record was terrible. Frost, Chip Kelly, etc. Its not all about the coach. I’m not a Kelly fan but I hope they are smarter about the next hire and make it a smooth transition somehow.
Barring Urban or Stoops falling into our laps, Fuente. Matt Campbell's a maybe at this point, but could coach his way into the drivers seat this season or next. That's ignoring the Peterson/Franklin types that aren't realistic.
I just don't think he's prone to do that. He seems like a west coast guy through and through. I'd like to be proven wrong. You give him the ammo ND supplies and I think he could be great.
apparently he has recovered http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...t-chris-petersen-leave-boise-state-washington also kellen moore looks like he has special needs
That was rumored as to why he wouldn’t leave Boise...and he went to fucking Washington. Him and Fuente would be near the top of my list. Stoops and Tressel too...cuz why the fuck not.
The right players. I’m happy to see them going after kids that might actually stay in school with some upside as opposed to swinging for the fences with 5 stars. I like the defensive depth they have this year at the cost of a few down years. Hope to see it continue. I know the line is coming together after losing 2 top 10 lineman but it’s crazy to think what Josh Adams did last year when ND was hanging 49 points on everyone early. One or two skill players that could step up would take so much pressure of Wimbush. ND won’t win championships every year regardless of the coach. If you didn’t watch a single game of ND and just looked back at Brian Kelly’s record would you have hired him for his career at ND?
This topic got my wheels turning... this would seem like a good offseason to be shopping for a new coach (irrespective of which coaches might be available). Unless I'm overlooking someone, USC and, to a much lesser extent, Texas are the only national powers that I could see firing their coach this year for non-scandal reasons and I think there would have to be 2-3 more bad losses for either to pull the trigger. Edit: Auburn is probably more likely than Texas. They're kind of a loose cannon.
Mid season coaching debate at 3-0 is on the same level of discussing what everyone had for lunch in the Urban Meyer thread.
The full unquestioning support of the administration, including all paid and unpaid administrative interns.
it has nothing to do with this season, purely hypothetical once our brother Brian walks away from a truly mythmaking season at the helm of our lads
Just noticed USC is 25th in the 247 recruiting rankings right now. Helton is even worse than I thought.
Petersen would be my top choice followed by Fuente. My only worry with them is whether or not they'd be able to recruit nationally. Matt Campbell, Joe Moorhead, and Jeremy Pruitt could be really good but they're unproven. I don't think either Stoops or Franklin are realistic.
