On the morning of November 4th, 2019, three mothers in three vehicles, with fourteen children between them, set out from LaMora, a small family community in the mountains of northeastern Sonora. Two of them to see family in Chihuahua, and one of them to pick up her husband from the airport in Phoenix, AZ. They never made it. They were ambushed by the Mexican cartels; shot, burned, and murdered in cold blood. These were innocent civilians, American citizens simply trying to live peaceful lives. For 11 hours, their families all over Sonora, Chihuahua, and the Midwestern US waited in fear and horror for any news of possible survivors. The first vehicle was found full of bullet holes and completely ablaze. Nita and the four of her seven children she had taken on the trip were burned to mostly ashes and only a few charred bones left to identify that all five had been inside. It appeared that one tried to escape as the front passenger door was open and the remains were partially in and out of the vehicle. On another part of the road, about 10 miles ahead, were Christina, with her baby Faith in her vehicle, and Dawna with nine children in hers. They both were fired upon from ahead and Christina jumped out waving her arms to let the attackers know that it was women and children in the vehicles. She gave her life to try and save the rest. Dawna and two of her boys were also killed in the gunfire. After witnessing his mother and brothers being shot dead, Dawna's son Devin hid his 6 other siblings in the bushes and covered them with branches to keep them safe while he went for help. When he took too long to return, his 9 year old sister left the remaining five to try again. Devin arrived in LaMora at 5:30 pm, 6 hours after the ambush, giving the first news anyone had heard of his and Christina's families. Devin's uncles armed themselves with guns and returned to try and find the hidden children, knowing many of them were injured. They didn't get far before realizing they would be risking death, since there had been continual shooting for hours, all over the mountains near LaMora. The group of men waited a while for reinforcements, and around 7:30, found the hidden children. They found Christina's baby Faith with the vehicle around her riddled with bullet holes. Somehow she had remained untouched, and alive. She was in her car seat, which looked to have been hurriedly placed on the floor of the vehicle by her mother for protection. The search didn't end there. Mckenzie, the 9 year old who'd gone for help, was missing. Soldiers who'd by then arrived, and the men of LaMora and nearby towns searched for two hours in the dark until they found her around 9:30. The five of Dawna's children who were injured were picked up by a waiting ambulance and treated at the local hospital until a helicopter sent by Mexican military came to pick them up. Their father David who had by then arrived from Tucson, Arizona, accompanied them to be life flighted to another helicopter waiting at the US border, from there to be transported to Phoenix. Devin, his brother Jake, and Christina's baby Faith, all uninjured, are now in the care of their aunts and grandmas in LaMora. We lost 9 today. Right now we are waiting, for the morning, for answers, for justice. Sounds like it was a targeted attack. Kendra Lee Miller, whose sister-in-law Rhonita Maria Miller died in the attack, said, "Cartels have taken too many of our family members" and those killed Monday were "not the first." Miller told CNN her family has recently been threatened by cartels over where it can travel
Imagine how fucking scared that dude was for the last couple weeks. He had to know he was a dead man walking
The old saying is always true in Mexico if you’re a cop “el plomo o plata” either going to take a bullet or take money or both eventually
My Mexican hometown where I went to middle school https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-people-attack-Mexican-drug-rehab-center.html
good article https://www.projectknow.com/why-drug-cartels-keep-attacking-rehab-centers/ Rehab centers are filled with people who owe the cartels money. This leads to the cartels raiding the rehab centers to threaten and possibly wipe out people as an example. To the drug cartels, it's just business sense to do this. The problem with the majority of Mexican rehab centers is that they're unlicensed, which means that they have absolutely no controls or accreditation whatsoever. Predictably, these unlicensed centers are being run out of homes, sometimes by former addicts. This means security is nonexistent, which makes them easy to raid. In some cases, they are infiltrated by the cartels who then sell drugs to the patients, undermining the whole process in the name of making easy money. Additionally, it seems that some cartels are running their own rehab centers. The reason is simple: They make great recruiting grounds. The sort of people who attend these centers are often vulnerable and have issues with addiction, which is what, of course, these centers are supposed to treat. The cartels harass and intimidate the people in the center into becoming mules or runners themselves. They threaten to beat, maim, or kill loved ones to ensure the addicts who attend the center do the cartel's bidding. These people are then used as disposable henchmen or runners
10 were killed earlier this month and I talked to my cousin today and he said 100 been killed this week in the state of Guanajuato in general
I spent my first 18 years of my life spending at minimum 2 months there during the summer and I did 7th and 8th grade there as well.......personally luckily I never had anything crazy happen to me there but I definitely had classmates and family friends get kidnapped and some got killed even after the ransom was paid, that was in the 80s and 90s now it’s full out Cartel War.......it sucks because I have a young son who I want to take back and get to know his roots but my wife is like no fucking way
She’s right. So sad. Maybe he will have the opportunity in the foreseeable future. I can tell it means a lot to you. I would like to spend time in Mexico. I wish I had more bravery.
My parents live in Mexico (Im an only child so all my family is basically there) currently we still go back ( not now obviously) twice a year but my parents live in a safe area in Mazatlan but I hate the beach areas of Mexico tbh Im more of central Mexico kinda guy so it pains me it’s so dangerous down there right now because that is literally the best part of Mexico by far if you want to see something besides a resort beach town
I actually had that in my earlier post, but decided to delete it. I’m not that interested in Cancun, Veracruz, Mazatlan and the other touristy coastal cities. I’m interested in visiting the interior.
The state of Guanajuato for instance has San Miguel de Allende and the city of Guanajuato which are fucking amazing little cities to visit, and since it’s literally smack in the middle of Mexico you can be in Mexico City in 4 hours driving/bus or tons of cool other colonial cities within a couple of hours driving
basically have to do what the PRI did for so long and agree to an under the table truce where the cartels agreed to control certain territories without fighting each other too much with the government staying put for the most part and taking their bribe money........the PAN came into power without the relationships the PRI had with the cartels (PAN basically Mexican version of Republicans) and tried to fight the cartels head on like an actual war and like Mexicans always say till their rich neighbors up North stop with their gigantic appetite for drugs and their ability to send weapons south this can’t stop when ur talking that kind of money
just can’t see the cartels ever coming to a truce, especially with all that $$ and power on the line feel like the second someone did come to a truce another cartel would murder all of them
Never been, but I've heard about how beautiful it is and have wanted to go. I just know it's gotten pretty bad, violence wise, in the last ten years
Thats the problem with the strategy of dismantling the Big cartels all it caused was it to splinter into dozens and dozens smaller cartels
yeah basically in 2006 when Calderon came into power and tried to appease the Americans with his own war on drugs with the US arming him to try to fight this like a war that’s when it spiraled out of control
Not sure tbh at this point too many smaller cartels fighting, government way to corrupt, weapons flow easily from the US and Americans need their drugs so there will always be a supply to them
Everything flows down from our demand for the drugs, and given the success of every other "strategy" it would seem obvious that we should end the war on drugs and commit to a huge public health effort attacking addiction, and just, ya know, see what happens down there as a result of having significantly less demand for the product. * rides off on a unicorn *
Legalize drugs up here and stop exploiting Mexico, help them stabilize and expand their economy to greatly reduce the percentage of their population that is impoverished and desperate and without any option but to join the cartel or be slaughtered by them. Thats the fairy tale answer. None of those things are going to happen so idk what strategy we actually would try that would work. *we being the US
