Listening to Jurassic Park right now, will get to this after. It's going to be a tough sell to me as I'm tiring of this genre we keep going back to. However iirc jaimej recommended it. It seems she has good taste in beer and poor taste in spouses so we can use this to break the tie.
I dont think Ive ever seen jaimej post before. Makes me wonder what other regular posters are out there that I dont know of... Anyhoo - knocked out the first 6 chapters and Im really not feeling it. It's just a bunch of people complaining about each other. I'll stick it out a little more but... not looking good. Sorry to be a wet blanket. :(
Sidenote - I read Jurassic Park in HS and remember being surprised how similar to the movie it was because usually, as we all know, the movies dont do the books justice. end tweet.
Hi! I don't post all that often but I'm here! Yeah, it starts a bit slow cause there are a lot of moving pieces. It definitely moves quicker a few chapters in, and the payoff at the end (IMO) was totally worth it.
This is a really easy read. In 3 train rides to and from work, I've made it through 180 pages. I'm enjoying it so far but Spoiler FUCK are most of these women insufferable. The "interrogation" portions just make me already hate dealing with my future unborn child's friend's parents.
Not a lot of action in here. Is this the book that kills our precious club ? Also jaimej do you mind either PMing me or putting in spoilers how the book ends? I just cant comprehend how it becomes interesting or what twist there could be Spoiler I assume it has something to do with the divorcee killing the new wife, or maybe Ziggy turns out to be a little serial killer. Idk...
I'm about 60% through. I'll say this about Moriarty: I think she's a solid writer. This book isn't my thing and that's fine, but I think she does a good job of telling her story and having one page flow to the next. Some thoughts on what's going on plot wise Spoiler I'm through the chapter where Jane finds out about the petition to get Ziggy suspended. I don't have kids so I'm definitely ignorant of how all of this works, but I don't recall ever hearing of something around my elementary school where the parents were either this involved or this ludicrously influential. Sure, there was PTA and volunteers and all that. But man, Renata is driving me nuts. The whole Celeste storyline is sad and I suppose a good picture of how battered women think. Her character seems a little flat though. Hope she ends up getting the apartment and leaving Perry. But she keeps reconciling ways to stay. I think those of us who have made it this far (The whole single digits) understand some of the struggles with the story. But I'm doing my best to get what I can out of it. I'd like Moriarty to be stronger with the mystery angle. Because the chapters of just repeated complaining (however justified--and some if it is definitely justified) just comes off as tedious to me. It doesn't drive my interest nearly as much as the murder angle. Speaking of mystery, I'm still leaning toward Ziggy not being a mini psychopath who reflects the personality of his quasi rapist father. Something tells me the girl is being hurt by someone else. Not sure who. Luckily this is a quick read. I don't feel like I've invested much time and I'm already over halfway finished
Definitely not surprised you guys aren't loving it like I did, it is a more female-centric storyline. That said, the ending has a huge payout that IMO is worth finishing the book - especially since it's such a quick read.
How far in are you? Honestly think it's worth finishing but I can tell you if you must know. You're pretty far off with your assumptions FWIW.
Finished Spoiler I thought it had a pretty strong ending. I definitely saw Perry being the one who got killed, but I thought the Saxon Banks reveal was a nice twist. There were moments in this book where I rolled my eyes (daughter auctioning off her virginity, Tom's not gay!, etc.) and a lot of gossip we have to wade through (and several times really made this book a chore for me), but there are still some good messages in this story. I thought it was well-written and did a good job of capturing how victims of abuse are likely to think.
I did. I really enjoyed the reveal, but as most have mentioned, myself included, the women are just insufferable. I'll end up watching the show with jaimej.
