Hello friends. Going to be visiting for the first time over the week of 4th of July with my pregnant wife and 15 month old son. Have read through the most of this thread and assembled a list of restaurant recs people have made along with various other activities. Planning to spend a day at Biltmore and do some hiking and walking around downtown the other days. Anyone have some good hikes that aren't too strenuous but still provide nice views? We're planning on driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopping off at various spots, so proximity to the city isn't a big deal. I'm also looking at making some dinner reservations soon as I expect it'll be busy on the holiday weekend. Any festivities taking place for 4th of July in the area? Haven't seen much pop up on previous Google searches.
Love Asheville - been visiting every year for the last 10+ years and really want to eventually retire here. Couple questions out there to those local or in the know: Considering purchasing a home - something I could rent for the next 10-15 years, then live in when I retire. Any insight on favorite areas/neighborhoods? Any recommendations on a local realtor there? Any misc advice?
hendersonville seems more affordable and it’s got a really nice and enjoyable downtown and closer to a lot more hiking. my in laws live there and i love visiting
Any idea on the type/size of home you're looking for? More in-town or out with some land? I could def pass along some realtor recommendations.
Home is Indiana - and proximity to hiking is key. Minimum 1500 sq. Got 4 kids, and eventually it would be something they would come visit. Open to both in town and out - love the breweries/scene in Asheville - but will also be in my 50’s come that time and imagine we’ll gravitate toward a slower life pace. Would love a realtor recommendation as I’m just unsure where to even begin - aside from knowing that’s where we wanna be.
maybe brevard dupont is next door and it’s such a quaint downtown. love the white squirrel festival go every year
Yea, these would be great conversations to have with a realtor, but I can give my 2 cents. The best hiking is SW, W, and NE of Asheville, but to access all of it, you just would want to be relatively close to I26. Canton is an interesting buying opp because they just shut down the paper mill that caused the town to smell like shit but provided a shit ton of jobs. Varying opinions on what happens to the town, but there may be some value there. Weaverville/Jupiter/Candler would also be some interesting options. I'll DM you a couple of good realtors. There's no shortage of them in this town.
I’m coming up this weekend for Shakey Graves/Trampled by Turtles concert. Thinking about checking out the disc golf course at Highland Brewing Saturday
What about Waynesville? Can I get in on the realtor recommendation action? Similar position in that I very much want to get a mountain house in the next 2-3 years. Love Asheville but would prefer something a little more scenic, more land. That's why I thought Waynesville might be nice, but I don't really know much about it. That Canton info is very interesting though and looks like you can get some super cheap land there. That's an interesting option as well, to build my own place.
Will try not to spam the thread much more than this, but as some of you know, I've been working on opening a hostel in Asheville for years. Well, it's finally opening. The soft launch weekend is Sep 8-10 and the public opening is Sep 15th. If you're ever heading to town, looking for a cool place to stay, and would rather spend your travel budget on excursions instead of hotel beds, give me a shout. If you have friends coming into town and could mention us as an option, I'd certainly appreciate it. https://lazytigerhostel.com/ https://www.instagram.com/lazytigerhostel If you have that weekend open and would be interested in participating in the soft open, let me know.
There’s a couple restaurants, coffee shops, and a farmers market you can walk to. I imagine most folks will uber or bike to go drink somewhere
Drop the kids at grandmas and bring the lady to a tourists game. Mock Mr Moon for a few hours then crash in a deluxe queen mattress.
I’m not sure where else to ask this, but is there anything worth seeing at UNC or Duke’s campus? Or any good restaurants near them?
I've walked around both before as a tourist just killing time. Duke is smaller and more all together. The architecture of the buildings looks fancy like Hogwart's. I was able to go in the chapel and hear someone practicing organ, which was cool. I was able to go in Cameron Indoor Stadium AND WALK AROUND ON THE FLOOR which was beyond cool. (Was just kind of wandering the concourse, saw some maintenance people, they said go ahead. This was in the summertime). Chapel Hill was a little more spread out and not as obvious what's campus and what's not. Saw the well but didn't spit in it. Saw the Dean Dome from outside but couldn't go inside.
he’s not for a blue cup. franklin st just got decimated by covid and higher rent so a lot of the older places are closed. really like al’s burger shack. top of the hill is good on a nice day to people watch
Pics. This was in 09 when Gamecocks went on the road to play NC State on opening Thursday. Stopped through on the way back Friday (Tobias avert your eyes) Spoiler
Hopefully their food hall chicken location will stay open. I'm still sad about blue dream Curry house. Take my energy red ginger and chai pani
As far as I know it will but IMO the chicken sandwich isn’t as good there. they’d at there’s announcement coming - I wonder if they’ll move Chai Pani there to get more space after their James Beard award
Wtf that's awful. We were just talking about looking forward to going back on our trip up there this year.
wife just informed me we are visiting her family in two weeks in hendersonville Room 15 let’s grab one last sandwich
Some guests went there tonight, said it was really crowded and the food was good. very interested to hear the scoop once it leaks out
I did Art Loeb Trail from Canton to Brevard over the weekend. Recommend if you're in marathon shape with knees made of steel
