forgot to search for an Ashville thread but I did spend 4 days in a cabin in Weaverville last week with my wife and 3 kids. We had a great trip that involved going into Asheville each day and doing some touristy stuff. We did Sierra Nevada, Ashville Pizza and Brew, Luella's and Daddy Mac's. (My daughter loves mac and cheese and it was her fifth birthday so we had to do it). Daddy Mac's had ELITE buffalo chicken sliders though and a good bar setup to watch bball. The Biltmore was a lot more fun than I expected and my 7 and 5 year old actually loved it. The oldest was pissed we only got to see the 20 or so rooms because he expected to see all 100. the rest of the trip was spent hiking around the cabin building fires, swimming in the hot tub and watching basketball. It's a lovely family trip for a long weekend that I would recommend to anyone with youngish kids. also we came through Hot Springs NC on the way out and it's a cool little mountain town. would have loved to hang around there longer.
Bummer about the old Pisgah Brewing taproom/location. Went out there last night for dead cover band. Noticed different address and obviously much different spot. Talked to the owner Dave during set break, basically said it was Covid and new landlord of the building. Loved that old spot so much, one of my fav breweries
The videos from Asheville and Boone have legit made me sad. We enjoy our yearly trip up there. Seems like that won't be a good idea this year. :/
My god. That's awful. I want to cry and we only visit once a year. I feel awful for the people there.
Signed up for a couple shifts to sort and package food this week and next http://volunteer.foodbankcenc.org/
Everything I've seen for the Highlands and Cashiers is mostly just loss of power and trees down. No big flooding concerns.
Friend stayed in Highlands through the weekends and she said nothing too bad. Trees down and power outages but no bad flooding.
How are things up there? I'd written off our trip this year but saw a video saying they need the tourist money so now thinking about going, even if it won't be like normal.
Not good. It's very hard to even access roads still. It's cool you want to help, but it's still a nightmare up there. I wouldn't do it, just donate if you really want to help. Greenville, SC, where I live, still has roads you cannot access and it's been almost a month.
We were supposed to go this weekend, and our host advised us not to come. Some places have reopened, but there’s still widespread devastation and a lack of potable water throughout the area. Not to mention the roads and other infrastructure as Phil Brickma mentioned. Like you, we want to get up there and help the local economy but we also want to be cognizant of not using valuable resources for pleasure when other people are suffering so much. It’s just a bad situation. We’re hoping to reschedule for early 2025 fwiw.
Appreciate the responses. Yea we want to support the area but don't want to be in the way. Might just order some shit online.
I wonder what they'd charge me to freeze and overnight me an entire sheet of their sriracha sausage. https://biscuitheads.com/products/biscuits
We're booked in Highlands for New Year's. Host said we should be fine by then but will keep us in the loop. Fingers crossed. Didn't sound as bad there as further East and North.
Yup in my part of the county I have roads still closed because of the bridges effected by all the water. Throw in all the trees still down. It's better than WNC of course.
I hope your NYE plans are staying at your rental and hanging out. And that's not at all hurricane related.
Food would be great. Although there is a water shortage, I saw on the news that Asheville is requesting people stop donating water. Instead, they are asking people to donate clothes, food, etc. - basically the essentials that people lost when their houses were destroyed.
Ugh. I saw Boone got rocked, wasn't sure about Banner Elk. Man this sucks so bad, feel awful for the people up there. Such a beautiful area.
If someone was thinking of moving there, what would be the best area to look for housing? What area has best schools? We are always on main roads and never really looked at housing like that.
hendersonville is really nice imo. has a pretty idyllic downtown area and you're still plenty close to asheville (presumably at a more reasonable price). not sure on the schools. in laws live in etowah and its gorgeous out there
Didn't someone on here start the Blind Tiger there? Just saw it advertised on an Afar daily email I get. Looks awesome.
