I was trying to find out where it was coming from and saw Matt Walsh say something like “I’ll support everything this guy ever puts out.” Then the next link I saw was a Texags thread.
If you’re going to that check out Shadowgrass too. Saw they announced they would be there. Them and Into The Fog are my favorite up and coming newgrass/jamgrass.
I have my ticket and camping pass, but I’m back on the east coast so it’ll be hard to pull off. Missing Dicks for the first time in like 5+ years
So Yonder had Coleman Smith from Rapidgrass with them on fiddle. I thought he played well with them, fit in better than Allie for my tastes. Not sure if they try to get him for permanent replacement I like Nick Piccininni on mandolin and he’s pretty good on fiddle himself. He’s a bit cheesy. He’s not as good as Jacob Jolliff before him, who is just technically incredible on mandolin. I always end up in the same place with them though. Still fun but when Ben or someone else they have starts singing a Jeff song I just start missing him. Railroad Earth and Leftover haven’t evolved all that much but they still got it.
Found this last night. A bit of them are more popular versions instead of the original recording artist. Seems pretty comprehensive going back to stuff they don’t play any more, but is missing some newer ones like Nutshell. Still a pretty good playlist. May start from this and trim some things down and make some replacements/additions.
Yeah man. Lot of gems in that one. That place looked awesome. I think Alex is one of the best improvisationalists I’ve ever seen in any setting.
Yeah, the Orion. It is a cool spot. Super easy to get in, huge drink selection, multiple food trucks inside the venue, and they have bands playing within the fence of the venue after the show. Different bars focus on different drinks, so there’s an IPA bar, seltzer bar, bourbon bar (with some hard to find stuff), tequila bar, etc. I may be partial though because I had the best French bread pizza I’ve ever had in a lot before. Got it both nights and each time the chef had a balloon in his mouth. Some damn good za
Pretty Daughter setting up a fire run to close this set. He was feeling it for sure. ♫ Now Playing Billy Strings:Dec 13, 2019 at Ogden Theater, Denver, CO on @nugsnet https://2nu.gs/2PH2CE5
Hot take incoming: Billy needs to release some new music because his shows are becoming predictable/repetitive
They’re working on one but that is pretty spicy. I consume a lot of Billy content but you seem to burn yourself out on bands pretty fast, no? Maybe you had too much too fast, maybe you had too much too fast. Or just over played your part
Another one from Cory Walkers album, this one with Rodney Dillard. Seems like this will be a good one.
Anyone going to IMBAs? Coming up at end of Sept. For me it should be on the Bluegrass bucket list with Merlefest and Telluride, though outside of the awards it’s geared towards smaller acts and has fewer big names. If you play a bluegrass instrument then no question, endless opportunities to jam. The week approaching downtown Raleigh will have “Ramble” nights highlighting upcoming acts in local venues. Awards show and performances on Thur 2 day festival and convention on Fri-Sat with stages in the streets and two nights of main stage acts at Red Hat. Main Stage this year:
Saw Into The Fog open for Big Richard on Wed. Last year Into The Fog added a full time electric guitar and he’s pretty much taken the fiddle spot/role now. It works pretty well and they’re really coming together with that lineup. He’s able to get after it when soloing but not drown out the others. They are a lot of fun. I had not seen Big Richard before, but they were great as well. All female newgrass and some good if not awkward stage banter. Mando, fiddle, cello, bass. Will catch them again for sure. One of the best versions of The Two Sisters murder ballad I’ve ever seen, where they harmonized and sang the last two verses together at the same time while all singing different lines. They brought some local talent out with them. Trey Wellington on banjo, Pattie from Hank, Pattie, and The Current on fiddle. She’s damn incredible
Ramble schedule https://worldofbluegrass.org/ramble/ibma-bluegrass-ramble-schedule-lineup/ They haven’t released the weekend street stage schedule yet, but will be here sometime soon I imagine. https://worldofbluegrass.org/festival/ Lot of unofficial stuff in the triangle that week too.
Willie is making a Bluegrass album. https://www.texasmonthly.com/arts-entertainment/willie-nelson-bluegrass-album-review/
https://spotify.link/bUrBtWYkcDb The album I didn’t know I needed. Really like Still Is Still Moving To Me
Starting to transcribe Tony Rice solos and working with my teacher to break them down into licks. Should've started this a while ago, it's such a challenge and a lot of fun. I've only done Blue Ridge Cabin Home so far, started On and On this week. Starting to be able to hear patterns rather than slow it down and try to pick out phrases note by note. The state bluegrass association jam for Oct is on the 14th, thinking I'll make the 2 hour drive to go play this month
Nice. Playing with others will propel you for sure. I went to a new jam for me last week. Ended up being a bunch of white beards. Playing stuff more like Beach Boys, CCR, Beatles, random oldies, with some traditional tunes and bluegrass mixed in. I haven’t really done all that many vocal tunes compared to fiddle tunes, so it’s going to be good practice. I’m getting now to where I can take/fake a break on about anything if it’s in G, A , or D, and it’s not going crazy fast.
Last night's show will definitely get a few extra listens. 3 hours. 30 songs. Glad I turned it on after the Braves game. Maybe my favorite Wargasm. LA Woman is my favorite Doors album so always love HH cover on top of sandwiched between Creek. So Many Miles is my jam. He was in a story telling mood for sure. Show had a little bit of everything. Caught these guys last night. Loved them. 4 piece right now and the fiddle player from this set is gone. Sounded like they’re fine to stay at 4 for a bit. Mandolin player is excellent. He swept first place at Rockygrass on mando, guitar, and fiddle instrumental contests last year.
Sierra is getting around in the jam scene a lot lately. Billy. Billy and the Kids. Daniel Donatos Christmas jam. I’m sure stuff I’ve missed. Love it.
I was robbed seeing her with Sturgill at the Ryman. I have spent the last 22 mins figuring out expense costs for NYE instead of working. Thanks. I just don't have a babysitter for 4 days for a 1 year old. And I'd like think I ain't dumb enough to fly solo and leave bae at home.
With Phish not playing the Sphere for NYE, there’s a good chance I’ll be in NOLA. TBD at this point since my bday is 12/30 but NOLA is currently the main contender.
Ready for the Scramble. Free audio for everyone (nugs trial) and free video for subscribers. Should start around 19:15 EDT.
