This is her and my little cousin. They used to play together a lot, as he used to play bluegrass shows all over the country.
At Railbird, Billy played like 8 songs in 2 hours. Every song was an insane jam session and it was amazing. I seriously felt like I was watching a modern day Clapton or Hendrix. I was completely blown away by his guitar playing.
Billy is on another level.. watch/listen to his electric work with Billy and the Kids. It’s the best show I’ve seen all year.
I got a stringdusters cd off an Oskar Blues 12 pack maybe 8-10 years ago and that is when I found out they do indeed fuck
Yonder’s set from Bonnaroo 2006 is one that I’ve listened to literally hundreds of times and it will forever hold a place in my heart now that Jeff is gone. Early 2000s YMSB sent me down the Sam Bush and John Hartford rabbit holes (and their progeny and everything related thereto), and I’m quite glad Jeff’s “enthusiasm” caused that. Currently in the midst of exploring Garcia & Grisman (Holdin’ is a John Hartford cover)
Would also like to the add the caveat that, while Sam Bush and Bela (in the above video) are true bluegrass musicians, 100% bluegrass musicians/bands cannot have a drummer. Please forgive my faux pas of posting a vid with a drummer in the bluegrass thread
Catching two nights of Sturgill's Ryman run in November and one night of Billy Strings: String the Halls at Marathon in December
The only negative about this genre in 2021 is that dudes in fuckin Brooklyn who like it dress the same as dudes whose fathers died from black lung.
Yeah, the Ryman would have been ideal obviously. I was hoping for the Brooklyn Bowl. But I will get to Marathon early for that poster.
I saw in him Asheville for Halloween. Not sure if you’ve seen him before, but be prepared to have your mind blown. It’s a downright religious experience.
I sold beer at The Farm show. I was so busy during the first set, it was harder to keep up. Plus fucking chompers everywhere while in line. I got off shift in time to see a badass Highway Hypnosis and the last 25 of the set. Included Dust in a Baggie. I'm pumped. Not sure how we are going to divide poster and rail, but we shall see. Also jealous as fuck seeing that Halloween run.
Two masters talking to each other with their instruments. Love the nods when one of them impresses the other. Really excited for Bela’s foray back into bluegrass after so many years of world music and other stuff. Crazy it has been more than 20 years since he put out a bluegrass album. His bluegrass stuff doesn’t often have lyrics, but in addition to being a world class player, he also always surrounds himself with other world class players no matter the style of music.
I couldn’t agree more. Benjamin Tod Flippo is a national treasure (and i think my favorite living song writer) and Matt Heckler isn’t far behind. Logan Halstead (Arlo McKinley is bringing him along nicely) may end up more in Americana or Folk genres, but is making the press on a lot of Bluegrass news outlets lately. Edited for spoiler: ramblings about what I’m listening to Spoiler Ad nauseum rambling Here’s a good one gone too soon Nicholas Ridout. He used to hop trains with Benjamin Tod and they, along with their wives, had about 10 different band names that you can find music under. and his widow my favorite two Heckler tunes right now Clifton Hicks has that pure Appalachia sound and has quite the collection (and knowledge) of old banjos. I have to ignore some of his videos for what it’s worth. Charlie Parr with my favorite version of moonshiner ever. He might be the most talented 12 string picker I’ve ever seen or heard love. Joseph Huber of 357 String Band. I like his solo work more. This particular song gets better with every listen.
Yeah buddy. If you haven’t heard Bryan Sutton he is a top notch flatpicking guitarist. Sierra Hull on this one too, her second run is amazing.
Billy Strings in Nashville tonight. I'm ready to go stand in line right now. But I think I better wait a few more hours at least. Getting that poster is important shit
People in Asheville were lined up for Halloween posters by this time. He absolutely burnt the Eastern down last weekend, so you’re in for a treat!
And this is a standing room only show so it will be worse because of the rail. It's raining here now, and I have a few errands to run before leaving.
Hahahaha fuck me. Not even a make up show. Fuck, and Knoxville is sold out. I was going to get a free poster cuz I had an extra ticket for a dude and being the DD. Mother fucker.
At least I got to see some of his set this summer on the Farm while I bartended. This makes 2 straight Bonnaroos, 2 tours of Sturgill where I had two nights each, and now this Billy Strings show. It fucking sucks. First world problems though. Edit add on: Still going downtown. It's Nashville. May hit up the Station Inn and see whats up while keeping our ear to the ground for any appearances around town. That or Moon Taxi at the new Brooklyn Bowl to check out the new venue.
Pivoting to this Spoiler The Trevor Clark cat seems like a wanna be Music Row radio county bro. Not idea about Mosey Magee.
