Been on a huge bluegrass kick the past few months -- was literally going to create a thread until i saw this. Is Caamp bluegrass? I hope it's not country. Big fan This has been on repeat this week, I love female vocals with some pickin
My favorite local bar is this divey bluegrass venue that is so much damn fun. Tuesday's are open mic bluegrass jams:
Caamp is awesome and would be more Americana. Their earlier stuff skews more to the bluegrass side and they have expanded from that a bit. I would have never called them a bluegrass band, but this thread is for all of it. I would say there is plenty of Country music I like though, just not the shit pumped out through the pop charts. It’s all mostly bluegrass or Americana based. My favorite shirt I saw at Merlefest was a plain black Tshirt with white letters “That Ain’t Country Music”. I would love to wear that around to the Myrtle Beach Country Music Festival to see the reactions.
Billy and Alex sat in with Sam Grisman Project with Peter Rowan. Won’t be and to catch them on this tour. I really hope they come back through the SE with Peter. Hopefully with Dom Leslie on Mandolin, and Vic Furtado on banjo like this one too. The core lineup is much better when they are there.
New Billy Single. I can already tell I’m going to burn this album out. Spoiler This is probably my favorite piece of music off the new record. I veered off and followed my instincts.. even though I barely knew what I was doing on protools at the time (still don’t) I made the first part late one night when I was at home messing around on the stratosphere guitar (a 12 string guitar with each pair of strings tuned in harmonic intervals. Some major 3rds some 5ths I think? I’m not sure but it’s a really cool sound. The first time I heard it was Stratosphere Boogie by Jimmy Bryant and speedy west.) It started when the main guitar part revealed itself to me. After I recorded that guitar part, then I recorded myself whistling this little melody over the chords .. then I thought”well what if it wasn’t a whistle at all and if that melody belonged to the lyrics?” So I took the whistle out and wrote words to fit that melody.. I just chased it for a minute and it presented itself to me and I’m soo happy it came together. To me this was always a 2 part thing. Not really sure why, it’s just the way it wanted to come out.. the second part (I believe in you) is maybe some of the realest shit I’ve written.. from the mire. From the part of my heart that just wants everyone that is struggling to be okay. I believe in you, it’s true. Thank you for listening. I love you. Hes really getting out there with a bunch of people: New Sierra Hull Single/cover:
Quintuple post. Just put on the new Fruition album. Great Americana band. Like many of them they started out as a string band.
How was it? I was crushing pretty hard on Nick’s drummer when we saw him. I don’t find myself listening to them repeatedly that much, but love their live vibe. He is a character for sure.
Both were excellent. First time seeing Nick even though he's from Arkansas. Actually playing a free show around town in a month or so and definitely making it to that. I was never a punk rocker type but I appreciate the ethos and he's definitely still that guy just playing different music now. And yeah, his drummer was smoke. Nick was definitely happy to be done with this tour for then and go back home, he kept giving Arkansas lots of love haha. 2nd time seeing Sierra Ferrell. First show was in a club and was oversold. This venue in Memphis (Overton Park Shell) was pretty nice, all GA with a lawn and standing room pit, merch lines sucked but the show rocked and was nice to enjoy some songs in the lawn and walk up pretty damn close for the encore despite probably being twice as many people as the April show. And she had switched up the set list a bit and the band jammed out a couple songs in ways they definitely did not before. So they're obviously catching a groove touring so much.
I think he said his current style of country was honed in New Orleans with this current band, which makes sense because it’s pretty gritty.
That definitely makes sense to me. I also learned he designed his own merch, and he's done design work for one of the better/old breweries in the state that's always had good art. Loved the sticker selection, definitely kopping merch at the next show.
Saw that these guys made Renewal and became quite embarrassed I haven’t yet seen them live since they’re from here smh
They’re at the top of my list to see, but haven’t caught them yet. Feel like this album is going to bang, and they are on the edge of blowing up. Think they could leap frog some of the other upcoming/middling jamgrass bands. Josiah Nelson is the fiddle player. He used to be in the Trey Wellington band. Trey is from around here and has come to several of the local grassroots org open jams to kind of lead them. I sat with his band and Josiah in a busking tent at IBMA for about an hour last year. They are way above my skill level, but I could get in some breaks on songs I called or if someone calls something I know. Otherwise I play chords and try not to get in the way.
Musically I think Failing lags the others a bit. But that tenor vocal is calling Ralph Stanley right from the grave. And I would pay top dollar to watch Alex play whatever he wanted to solo for a few hours.
She has been around the Nashville scene for a while but this is her first solo album. She has a bunch of vids on her YouTube channel Instagram. That other female on guitar in the video is the East Nash Grass fiddle player.
