Thought Manny handled Thurman’s power all night. Was hurt a couple times but never got taken advantage on.
Seeing those cards, Thurman's going to feel sick for weeks watching the replay. The fight was right there on the table for him.
Yeah not mad at the decision or the cards. Thought it was a close fight. Thurman gonna be pissed about the first round and losing all momentum early.
Canelo going on to rule the world and pacquaio still beating people 6 years later have done more for floyd's legacy than anything else.
There have been two athletes in my lifetime whom I have felt privileged to have watched in person. The first was Pedro Martinez. The second is Floyd Mayweather. I don’t mean to say that Floyd and Pedro were the two greatest athletes of the past 30-something years — certainly, there’s a sense of reverence one gets while watching LeBron, and that Michael Jordan guy wasn’t bad, either. But I believe in a very cerebral version of sports genius, and there’s nothing more thrilling to me than when one athlete mentally outmaneuvers his opponent to the point of paralysis. Floyd Hell happens to every Mayweather opponent. Its symptoms are simple yet irreversible: At some point during every fight, you will get so confused and frustrated by Floyd that you will forget pretty much everything you ever learned about boxing. You will lurch forward, hit low, throw elbows and wild haymakers that will miss Floyd’s chin by two, three feet. You will stop moving your head and you will grimly eat jabs and right hooks because you have forgotten that there are ways to avoid getting punched in the face. On Saturday night, Floyd brought his entire hell onto Canelo Alvarez. ... He stood in the pocket, jabbing repeatedly through Canelo’s guard. He circled to the left and to the right and snapped Canelo’s head back with power punches. Floyd seemed intent on humiliating his younger opponent in about as many ways as he could fit into 36 minutes of action. In the eighth, Canelo finally got Floyd within range and threw a five-punch combination. Floyd dodged each punch by moving a different part of his body. He ducked, sidestepped, swiveled his hips, and then hopped backward out of range. It was like watching The Thing on Oxycontin trying to punch out Mr. Fantastic. -Jay Kang, Money's Inferno.
I'm good with a rematch. For the first time really, I'm good with Pacquiao-Spence given what we saw tonight. I'm good with Pacquiao-Crawford as well. Any of those 3 seem realistic and more than acceptable.
why do you want to see manny get sent into retirement in horrifying fashion? He's done enough for the sport.
I mean, if he wants to fight Andre Berto and walk-off into the Philippine sunset, I'm all good with that too. But he showed enough tonight that I'm ok with him taking another massive fight if he wants to take it.
I think Manny did more than enough tonight to justify a match Spence or Crawford. I will say Thurman was the best opponent for Manny and he took advantage of the speed advantage. Won’t have the same luxury against the other two but he’s a vet and will fight his ass off
Shout out to the judges tonight. Way to often in this sport do we watch a close fight like this and see cards to the extreme. I think 114-113 for Thurman and 115-112 are on the money for what I watched tonight. Anything beyond those scores in either direction and you give fuel to those who like to shit on the sport because of the judging.
Manny doesn't need to get in the ring with Spence or Crawford. He fought the lesser of the 3 for a reason. Ride off into the sunset.
“Please god don’t fight Thurman.” -everyone last year Manny can handle (ie make it a good fight) with anyone around that weight. Spence should be his next and last fight.
Thurman went life and death with joseito Lopez while returning from a 2 year hiatus and isn't half the talent Spence is.
I have never considered Thurman an incredible talent and I say that as someone that lives by his gym, is a fan, etc but nonetheless that is a good win for old Manny. Let's not forget Thurman beat Porter and Garcia. With that being said, I've been big on 2 guys for years now... Spence and Devin Haney. I obviously respect Spence, but god damn Pac is an incredible talent. Father time is ticking, we need Pac vs Spence and I have no problem betting (small) on Pac by decision.
Had it 6-6 in terms of rounds with the knockdown giving Pacquiao the win. Thurman avoids that knockdown and he wins. If he avoids that body shot later in the fight, he also probably wins. Was looking real bad for Thurman and he stormed back nicely. Thurman turned it into a great fight with plenty of drama at the end. The commentary was brutal. Obviously those guys are still invested in Pacquiao, but it's a bit laughable when they are talking about how Pac is dominating the fight while the graphic showing Thurman's punch count keeps increasing over Pacquiao's. Hopefully everyone watched at a party with the volume on low or completely off. I hope Pac retires. His age showed up in the latter half of the fight, and he won't be getting any better with another 6+ months off at this stage. The only fight I'd like to see would be a rematch with Mayweather as he likely won't take any punishment in that fight. He was eating some hellacious power shots from Thurman. Just retire with the W and enjoy the rest of your life while your wits are still with you.
Terrible news. Poor corner is going to question if they should have thrown the towel earlier. Awful to see
Video on twitter showing his corner pleading with him to stop the fight, he obviously was saying no, but corner called it anyway. Also interview with trainer saying one more punch could be the last one, and it's not worth it to stay in the fight. sad stuff.
