Great fight. Biggest GGG guy you'll ever see, but I can't hate on calling it a draw. Was extremely close and both guys fought their asses off (which is what makes 118-110 so egregious). Can't wait for rounds 13-24. Hopefully it happens soon, because time ain't on my boy Gennady's side.
I think in some/most instances money or even conspiracy isn't involved. It's just politics. She was obviously trying to help Golden Boy or whoever. Maybe she'll speak.
Bet $$ on GGG, didn't watch fight (wedding) but should I be pissed at result? Turned on ESPN and Atlas going crazy (doesn't seem out of the norm tho)
I mean, one guy landed more punches than the other. By coincidence it was the same guy that fought like a champion. Meanwhile one guy stayed on his heels.
I think most people saw a close fight with a slight edge to GGG. A draw isn't entirely unreasonable. A judge scoring it 118-110 in favor of Canelo is what all the drama is about.
Ggg landed more but you could easily make the argument that canelo landed more meaningful shots. There were a ton of rounds where I felt it was a toss-up as the round ended. Just a really close fight. Not to mention, canelo won the final 3 rounds on all 3 cards. He closed like a champion. Nothing but respect for the kid. Had ggg won one of those, he likely would've broken the 114-114 draw on the 3rd scorecard and won the fight. And ggg is a stalker and canelo is a counter-puncher. We all knew that going in. I don't hold it against canelo that he "fought on his heels" because that's his style and he pulled it off really well. Like I said, I would've given the edge to Gennady. I thought he was busy enough to win. But there's a difference between disagreeing with the judges and claiming robbery. I don't think anyone got robbed.
I do need to do that before I speak too definitively. But when the fight ended, before the scores were announced, I told my buddy that I thought ggg won, but I wouldn't be shocked if it went the other way. If that's my gut reaction, I can't act like a draw is a robbery, even if one of the scorecards was preposterously bad.
It makes me question the Judge that scored it even. I'm not saying it wasn't close but maybe that was his gift to golden boy in his eyes. we really shouldn't have an even amount of rounds lol.
I had it 115-13 Canelo I think a draw of for the fight is fair and have no issues with that. But once again a terrible judge will take the spotlight away from a fantastic battle between two guys who landed some bombs tonight. looking forward to the rematch. I think GGG will look at the first 3 and last 3 rounds of this fight and see where this fight became a draw.
Disagree. That judge is out of her mind, but that alone didn't determine the outcome. Had it been a 115-113 canelo decision from her, the outcome of the fight still would've been a draw and you wouldn't hear a single complaint. Notice there's no one complaining about the 114-114 score. Thus, not a robbery. Robberies are clear cut. This fight was not clear cut. It was extremely close.
I had rounds 1,2, 3 and 10,11,12 all for Canelo Pretty sure all three judges have Canelo rounds 10,11,12 I agree GGG easily won most of the middle rounds.
I think its a shame that ESPN had a nearly 30 minute segment about this mega fight and used maybe 2 minutes speaking about the in ring action. ESPN should be better than that but sadly they aren't. Just looking for the talking heads to have massive arguments and scream like idiots.
It's hard to not get cynical with the sport as a whole. Scorecards like that are by design because controversy sells.
Are you going to ban everyone else that made similar comments? That was a great fight to watch and all anyone is talking about is the scorecard. The worst thing is nobody was super surprised by it. That shit hurts boxing, and that sucks bc again that was a fantastic fight to watch as casual boxing fan.
someone who knows something about boxing: how is it unclear who won when both fighters landed a similar number of power punches at a similar rate and one of them landed a significantly larger total number with, again, similar hit rates?
Think of it as if football was scored only by who won each qtr. Team A scores 21 in the 1st and never scores again. Team B scores 7 in the 2nd, 7 in the 3rd, 7 in the 4th. Both scored 21 but Team B won 3 of the 4 qtrs so they win the game. *I know very little about boxing
One thought canelo won, one thought Gennady won, one called it a draw. I rewatched it and I could easily see someone making the case that canelo won the 1st 3 and last 3 rounds. That's 6/12 right there. I get the outrage with 118-110, but I don't get the outrage with saying that fight was a draw, even after rewatching it. It was an extremely close fight and I have no issues with not handing out a loss there. Let the guys sort it out in rounds 13-24.
Noob question... but why does boxing not stick with only odd numbers of rounds? Doesn't prevent a draw but at least makes it less likely right?
like i said, 2 didn't think ggg outright won. But i need to rewatch. you thought maybe rd 10 to canelo?
Not sure. Wasn't that long ago that most big fights were 15 rounds. As fighters gained more leverage over promoters, they began shortening rounds for fighter safety. Not sure how they landed on 12 though. I thought you could make a case for canelo, yeah. He landed a ton of big shots early in that round. But there were a lot of rounds like that in this fight where you walk away from it thinking it could've gone to either guy. What helped canelo in the later rounds is he upped his output and was really pushing the pace. It's rare, but rounds themselves can be draws. So an odd-number of rounds would decrease the probability of a draw, but wouldn't eliminate it.
Because boxing is scored by rounds and winning an extremely close round is worth as much as winning a round where you landed 35 more punches than the other guy. Also compubox is just four guys sitting around the ring hitting a button when they think something landed, they're far from perfect. Canelo landed the heavier and cleaner punches throughout most of the fight.
It was a great fight that lived up to the hype. Unfortunately a horrible card is what is being discussed. I thought GGG won but I have no problem with Canelo winning or a draw. Just 10-2 is fucked. It makes me think the idiot didn't even watch the fight.
