Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Cotto/Foreman Coverage at 10:15 Main Event~11

Bout to head over to my friends apartment, War Miguel! Think he wins a fairly close decision, getting inside Foreman and body punching will be the keys. Hopefully Manny has got Miguel back to his sustained body assault like he had before the Margo fight. Problems are Cottos height and the fact that he fights even smaller.

:curses: at HBO for not showing all the undercards, some good fights going on according to the ESPN live blog from the Stadium, says they are expecting 30K and Pac Man just arrived ringside

I remember when HOB didn't show Calderon/Mayol, was pissed about that. Typical HBO.

Manny is definitely rooting for Cotto. Would love for Cotto to win but I just don't see it.

Yeah. Only have 1 round for greene. But if greene continues to work that eye. Could cause some serious problems.

Watching a fight at yankee stadium would be amazing. Having big fights outside of Vegas is good for the sport.

I didn't like how Cotto was talking with Max. It sounds like he thinks he's done. Fucking Margo.

59-55 cotto. Unless cotto goes full retard this is over. Yuri doesn't have the ability to turn a fight around with his punching power.

As i type this yuri gets hurt. Can't move it's over.

I didn't really know either. But that is just something I'd like to see. And Cotto is a true champion he'll fight anybody. So I'm glad he has a belt (even if they don't mean that much anymore) because he is what a champion should be.

Unless it's a rematch with Shane there isn't anything for him at 147. Floyd would fuck him up and he'd absolutely outclass Berto.

He's got more options at 154.

Agreed, Cotto would be stupid to go down to 147, personally I thought he looked much more comfortable at 154. At this point in his career, I just don't see him going down to 147 for a Mosley. Cotto can't fight PBF or Pac-Man, and Berto isn't a big name yet that Cotto would want. I for one thought Cotto would lose tonight, but he was a completely different Cotto than I was expecting. He still has some gas left in the tank, so where he goes from here will be very interesting.

from ESPN looks like Foreman's wife told his corner to throw the towel in:

"Between rounds, Foreman's wife leaned over the railing and implored his trainer to stop the fight. Someone in Foreman's corner threw in the towel early in the seventh round, but referee Arthur Mercante Jr. angrily tossed the towel right back out. He asked Foreman if he wanted to continue, and the aspiring rabbi with the compelling back story elected to fight on."

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

I don't give a fuck who told the corner to do it. The fact is, the corner threw in the towel. Mercante is a fucking clown to have thrown that towel aside. I understand not stopping it right away, since you don't know where the towel came from. Once it was clear that it was Yuri's corner who threw it, that should have been enough. As I said before, no real fighter is gonna stop the fight themselves. It is up to the doctors, refs, and the corners to protect the fighters. Yuri is out there on one leg, taking punishment, in a fight that he could not win. This guy should have his license revoked for that display.

Of course Yuri wanted to keep fighting, he was fighting to keep his title. I applaud Yuri for keep fighting, showed alot of heart, but there was no reason for the ref to blow off the white towel. Once you see his corner wants the fight stopped and throw the towel, you stop it. Yuri isn't going to tell you to stop, so stop it when the corner says too.

The cornerman denied throwing in the towel though when Mercante questioned him, thus the confusion. Mercante was under the impression that nobody from Foreman's corner threw that towel in. He learned after the fact that it was in fact the corner who threw it.

I can't blame him if the cornerman lied about it afterward.

    - "Did you throw that towel in?"
    - "No."
    - "Ok good, cuz I see no reason to stop the fight at this moment. Let's keep going".

    Pretty much what happened.

He was way more "look at me" than that. Dude was screaming at Yuri to keep going.

I thought in the middle of the round they asked the trainer if he threw in the towel and he said "Yeah".

We can even ignore the towel. When Yuri slipped the 2nd without contact that should have been enough as well.
There were multiple times this should have been stopped and he didn't do so.

Yea, I love Berto, he is one of my favorite up and coming guys but that is what he is right now, up and coming. He isn't ready for a Cotto yet at this stage in his career. I'm hoping it is mostly just talk and this doesn't happen, because I'd hate to see him fight Cotto and lose and mess up his career. Dude has a bright future, but in no way is he ready for Cotto.

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

It's interesting. There seems to be two different streams of thought in the Berto camp. I think his management realizes that while he has a good following of fans who think he is an up and coming star, he needs some more fights before he fights a big time guy. On the other hand, I know Berto and some people around him want him to fight a big star like a Mosley or a Cotto. I don't know how different Mosley will look when he is not fighting PBF, but Cotto for sure would be death for him. He was asked what his plan was if he had his way a couple days ago, and here was his answer " Really, I'd fight just about anybody. I'd love to get another title. I'd love to fight Manny Pacqauiao. I believe, you know, Shane Mosley, he's still a star. He's got a huge name. You know, Jan Zaveck's got a belt, and I'd love to get another title. And at the end of the tunnel, definitely, any and everybody wants that Floyd Mayweather fight."

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

    1. I agree wholeheartedly it should've been stopped sooner.

    2. It was an awkward time for the towel to be tossed in. The two just came out of a nice exchange of blows and Foreman wasn't hurt in that exchange whatsoever, then the towel randomly comes flying in. According to Mercante (until I hear otherwise, I'll go by his word), he asked the corner if he threw it in and the corner said no, so he disregarded it and kept the fight going.

I'll blame him for not stopping the fight the second time Yuri went down because of his leg, but I won't blame him for keeping the fight going after the towel fiasco. Personally, I think he handled that perfectly. It was a weird time for the towel to come in, so he asked the corner to verify that they threw it in, and they said no. So he kept it going. As long as he wasn't lying about the corner saying no, I think he was right in that situation. JMO.

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

I don't think Berto is ready for a big time fighter right now. I really think he needs a new trainer. I would like to see a lot more growth out of Berto. He's gotten by on his natural abilities so far IMO. When he goes against fighters who have the skills to match, he's gonna be in trouble. He finds himself off balance far too much and he should really jab more to set the table.

I think Berto's best options are someone like Clottey or Mosley. I personally find Clottey to be a C+ type of fighter. But Clottey is a big guy, with a fine defense and a solid (but overrated chin). Shane looked old as hell and couldn't pull the trigger the way he used to (some credit goes to Floyd). But Shane still presents plenty of problems. If he wants these big time fighters, I commend him and HBO will make it happen. Maybe after a L against an elite fighter, he realizes he needs to shake up his corner.

Fair enough. That situation was indeed very awkward. I don't know why someone would throw it in, lie to the ref about it, and then admit it later. The whole thing is very odd to say the least.

Even without the towel fiasco we agree that this fight was handled poorly.

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

Completely agree. Berto has alot of natural talent and ability, but that's all he has at this point. He is a very raw, brutish fighter who gets by on talent alone. I think Clottey would be an interesting fight. His fight against Pac-Man wasn't as one sided as some thought. Of course, he wasn't near active enough to win but he hurt Manny a good bit. Mosley looked really old, but i really want to know how much of that was Shane being old, and how much of that was Floyd being Floyd. Berto seems to want one of these big guys, and just like you said maybe an L will be enough to switch some things up.
