Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Congrats to Cotto- A True Champion

I was went to the fights last night. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. It was definitely entertaining withe HUGE Puerto Rican/Hispanic population there. Here are some thoughts on the night:

    - I had seats on the 300 level, but of course my buddies and I just sat in open seats on the lower level. Something you can do without much shame when you're young. It turned out that right before the main event they stopped checking tickets at the lower level next to the field so we sat in the best seats possible that weren't ringside.

    - Overall I thought the undercard fights were pretty, meh. The Joe Greene fight was decent though.

    - This was my first time in Yankee Stadium (new or old). The stadium is very nice and the jumbo screen in the outfield has unreal clarity.

    - The Latin women there... :moar: The women were amazing. From the cougar/young gold diggers that were sitting ringside, to all the good looking girls in the stand. There was a lot of eye candy walking around, it was great. Got eye fucked by a cougar, but naturally she proceeded to walk down to ringside because she was a trophy wife.

    - The dynamic between the Jews and the Puerto Ricans was pretty damn funny. Jews of course aren't very loud, but some of them got rowdy during the fight. The Puerto Ricans on the other hand...they were insane all night. Seemed like everyone had a flag there. It was actually pretty cool, although I definitely encountered a few dbags on the night. Specifically some 5'6" white dude with beer muscles that was apparently so fucking huge he couldn't help but walk into people. Nice verbal altercation there.

    - Saw 2 guys get into a fist fight on the 300 level. That was pretty funny. The one dude got pummeled until a cop came in and just shouldered the one guy to the ground.

    - Regarding the main event. You could feel the excitement there when the fighters came out. Like I said the undercards weren't all that great, but once they main event was starting you could just feel the energy rise. I thought the fight was really even until Foreman hurt his knee, although I had Cotto slightly ahead. My seats for the main event were as good as they could have been without sitting ringside, but from that distance it was still hard to not watch the jumbo screen. When Foreman fell the first time, did they say if he slipped in the ring, or if his leg just gave out on him? It was hard to tell. Once Foreman's corner tossed the towel in the place went ape shit. People immediately left too, which I thought was funny when they restarted the fight moments later. I was impressed with the way Foreman was fighting through his injury. My friends and I were hoping for some Rocky type gutsy ending where he could knock Cotto out, but his knee just wouldn't allow it.

Overall it was a cool experience. Being in Yankee Stadium for the first time and for the first fight was cool. The ending was disappointing of course, but it was a good fight up until that point. You've got to feel bad for both fighters. That's a tough way to lose a belt if you're Foreman, and the win just doesn't feel the same if you're Cotto. I'm hoping there will be a rematch.

Here are some pics I took on my phone:
My seat during the main event
    [IMG]

    Cotto on the jumbo screen
    [IMG]

    Foreman on the jumbo screen
    [IMG]

There were tons of dimes there. The place was crawling. Here was TMB 3 that was sitting a couple seats down from us. Trust me, her body and face were amazing. Here's some crappy pics I took while I was drunk.

Great stuff Pat ive never been to a fight but thats definitely on my list of things to do in the near future.

I think Mercante did a pretty good job with the fight. Foreman was not taking serious punishment and he himself wanted to go on. Obviously theres some cases in which a ref has to do the right thing but I dont believe this was one of them. If he stopped the fight earlier a lot of people(right or wrong) are saying Foreman is a bitch, etc. Instead Foreman developed more fans and a reputation as a guy who will fight on no matter what.

Didnt see this till today but apparently the Arabs from Abu Dhabi approached Arum with a "way bigger" offer for the fight then Jerry Jones $25 million. It would still be in Vegas but they would bring in all the Asian high rollers, I assume with a temporary stadium.

Glad it lived up to the hype Pat. Hopefully there are more fights at the stadium.

I always thought an outdoor stadium would be the best way to do it, the garden isn't that big. But for selfish reasons i want it to stay in the MGM.

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Andre Ward=Beast, Cotto/Berto?

    Cotto/Berto at 154 possible.

This would be very interesting. I have had some time to think about the Cotto win. It very much reminds me of Shane's win vs Margo. Guys who were coming off rough stretches (Shane lost to Margo and wasn't very good as Mayorga) and Cotto got beat down by Manny, struggled vs Clottey (the eye had a part in that). Faced guys who had weakness that Cotto/Shane could exploit and had new men in their corners to provide fresh perspective.

I'll admit I overreacted to Shane's win vs Margo. It was good but not as good as many people made it out to be. The same goes for Cotto. He moved up and fought a guy at 154 to did not fight the bigger man fight. Cotto exploited the lack of punching power and that was that.

Perhaps I'm being overly cynical but that's just my take. I still think Cotto would beat Berto (comfortably IMO) but not nearly as bad as I had implied before.

if the fight ever happens. Vegas is just the perfect place for this fight despite not having a huge stadium. The atmosphere of a fight week on the Vegas Strip can't be matched anywhere else

Thanks for posting this. Hoping this doesn't happen, as I think Cotto would beat Berto as well. I just don't know where Berto would go if he doesn't fight cotto/mosley. Berto has said though that he wants to stay at 147, but if he can get a good payday from Cotto he'll probably go up and do this fight. Fuck

    Couple of things...

    1. Very excited for Ward-Dirrell in Stage 3 of the Super 6. Ward is becoming a star and I am a fan of Dirrell.

    2. I don't think Cotto beats Berto as easily as some have said. At 154 though he would have an obvious advantage as Berto had talked about dropping to 140 for fights. Berto wants these fights so let's put him in and see how he fairs with Cotto or an aging Mosley before he even thinks about Money or Manny. Berto/Clottey would be a nice way for Berto to start his fun and then the next level (Cotto, Mosley) then the top two.

    3. David Mayo, a writer from Mayweathers hometown GR, says he doesn't believe a deal is close and he is pretty close with the family and Ellerbe. But I did see an interview with Floyd and 50 Cent talking about a CD they were coming out with that will drop around the time of "biggest fight in the history of the sport" so take that FWIW I guess.

    4. My friend asked me this the other day but I didn't know the answer..How do you become a boxing judge?

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Andre Ward=Beast, Cotto/Berto?

Berto has said he could move to 140, dont think he would do well at 154. Hes been down a few times and was rocked by a non power puncher in Collazo. Cotto wins this by KO.

Ellerbe doesnt do shit but look like a faggot. Apparently the testing has been determined its now about $$. Floyd asking for 60-40 is ridiculous, Pac probably needs to accept less than Floyd but something like 53-47 is acceptable.

Probably need to apply with the state athletic commission. From that I know they show you taped fights and you score them, if your card is reasonable and you can explain it they probably start you out at lower levels. Shouldnt be hard to get a job in Michigan since the retards running the commission dont even know the difference between a split decision and a majority decision. Berto will crush Cotto.

Cotto was ruined by Margacheato, got a gift decision against mosley and then got crushed by a blown up pacquiao. Hell, Yuri Foreman is nothing at all special and gave cotto life and death.

Cotto had been seriously overrated even before Margacheato, its just as bad now.

The fight would have to be at 154 to because I doubt Cotto moves back down so that would be the big advantage to him. At 147, it's a good fight though I think.

53-47 is fine with me but Pac does need to accept less of the split. It will get done.

No way in fucking hell. Berto can't crush anyone that isn't a C level fighter.

I agree it would have to be at 154. Cotto looked very comfortable fighting at that weight.

He seemed to carry the weight well and looked to be in great shape.

Berto got dropped by Collazo , that's fucking weak (I know styles make fights). This is a huge step up in class for Berto. Cotto has been in the ring with great fighters, Berto has not. That counts for something. Berto is so extremely raw that Steward is gonna have a great gameplan. You know Miguel can execute it. Cotto has the experience, corner, and good skills. He'll get the job done. Hopefully Berto shakes up his corner after this because his lack of growth is sad.

I give credit to Berto for wanting this fight.

I know I am late to this convo but not a chance in hell Stewart puts Berto in the ring with Cotto if he thought Berto couldn't win easy.

I am in the camp that Cotto is washed up full disclosure but I do think this will be a good fight

Re: Official 2010 Boxing Thread- Andre Ward=Beast, Cotto/Berto?

As I said, if Berto is getting rocked at 147 and claims he can make 140 then going to 154 to fight Cotto is stupid. Since he will probably never get to fight Pac or Floyd then he should drop to 140 and try to get involved there. Mosley is gonna try to fight Sergio Martinez at a catchweight although it looks like Martinez is gonna wait to see what happens with Pac-Floyd negotiations. There arent really any other options for Berto. It is good he wants tough fights but 147 isnt as deep as it was a few years ago.

I couldn't see a fight against Sergio going well for Shane. Personally hope he retires.

I'm not that confident Berto can really go to 140 like his camp implies. To start at 162 and drop to 140 would be crazy to me. But if he can that's where he needs to go 140 is a hot division right now with Alexander, Bradley, Khan, Maidana, etc. A lot of big fights to be made there.

Been hearing alot of rumors about Bradley/Berto at 147 because Bradley could be/is/might? be moving up to 147. No way could I see Berto go down to 140, I just don't think he can get down to that weight and be successful. Berto/Cotto would be an interesting fight, Berto could pull it off, but Cotto would be by far the best guy Berto has stepped into the ring with. Berto has a bright future but he needs some work before he starts getting into the big fights.

Recently defeated Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) will be making his ring return on September 18th against former World Boxing Council light middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s), according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fight will be taking place at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Exciting unbeaten Saul Alvarez will also be fighting on the same card against a still to be determined opponent. It’s curious that the 38-year-old Mosley has selected Mora to fight, because Mosley hasn’t always looked good when facing bigger light middleweight fighters.

The fucked up thing is that this fight is holding up a lot of other guys, namely Williams and Martinez. If Floyd wants to wait or whatever then just admit it. Of course that is relying on what Arum says being true, if its not then who knows what actually happened.

Bert Surgar: Mayweather is not necessarily afraid of Pac, but he's afraid of losing.

It makes sense to me. Bert said that Robinson lost, Ali lost but Mayweather likes being able to say that he's never lost. He says that he's been ducking Pac for a while with the retiring then coming back shit, plus all the drug testing stipulations he wanted and now wanting more than 50% of the purse fighting a guy that many consider to be the best p4p fighter in the world.

Mayweather has to decide by midnight tonight if he's going to fight in Nov.

    By Mark Vester

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum held his conference call to announce the outcome of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. negotiations for a November 13 showdown in Las Vegas. A proposal was sent to Mayweather a few weeks back. Mayweather was given a July 16 deadline to approve the deal. He never responded.

Arum said he was never negotiating with Golden Boy Promotions or their CEO Richard Schaefer. The negotiations took place between Arum and Mayweather's manager Al Haymon, with HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg as the middleman handling the talks between the two men. Arum never spoke to Haymon directly. Greenburg handled the negotiations between them, likely to avoid any disputes that would possibly crash the fight.

Arum said a fight with Mayweather could still happen. The date of July 16 was simply a deadline agreement with Greenburg - that Arum would notnegotiate or finalize any opponent until Mayweather gave an answer.NowArum is free to negotiate with the other two options, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

"We now have to go out and secure an opponent for Manny Pacquiao," Arum said.

If Mayweather comes around and decides that he wants the fight with Pacquiao in the next few days, Arumwill be ready, but there is not a lot of time on the table. Arumsaid that he needs to finalize a deal withan oppo nent for Pacquiao, within ten days time, because of everything involved with making a big pay-per-view fight for November 13.

Arum speculates that Mayweather did not accept the fight at this time because his uncle/trainer, Roger Mayweather, has a trial scheduled for an assault charge in August and there is a good chance that he might do some time in prison. Arum doesn't see Mayweather going forward with a Pacquiao fight without Roger being the trainer.

"I am sure there is a very good reason that Mayweather did not commit to a fight at this time," Arum said. "Greenburg told me that Haymon really tried to put the fight together."

"I don't think any of you guys should be hard on Floyd. I really think the issue with the uncle has had an effect. I can understand Floyd not taking a fight until there is a resolution with the Roger situation.

"If nothing comes about within the next few days, Arum will attempt to make the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in May 2011. But he will now move forward with trying to match Pacquiao against Margarito or Cotto in a junior middleweight championship bout.
