http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6045017 Source: Dave Wannstedt, Bills near deal Former University of Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt and the Buffalo Bills were working on a deal Friday morning that would make him assistant head coach and linebackers coach, a source who is part of the negotiations told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The deal was close but not done, according to the source. Wannstedt has worked previously with Chan Gailey, who this season completed his first year as the Bills' coach. When Wannstedt became coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2000, he hired Gailey as his offensive coordinator. Gailey spent two seasons with the Dolphins before moving on to coach at Georgia Tech. The San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns also had expressed interest in Wannstedt for various coaching roles. Wannstedt, who was forced to resign at Pitt last month, has served as a Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the Cowboys and head coach for the Chicago Bears as well as the Dolphins. The Bills' defense was last in the NFL against the run in 2010, allowing 2,714 yards rushing -- the second-highest total in franchise history. Buffalo allowed 200 yards rushing eight times. Wannstedt was ousted after six years at Pittsburgh, and following a 7-5 season in which the Panthers were picked to win the Big East. He declined the option to finish the season with the team, and was not on the sideline for Pitt's 27-10 win over Kentucky in the Compass Bowl.
In spite of the fact that Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey and general manager Buddy Nix have been generally positive in their remarks on quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, they are still scouting QBs throughout the draft season. "We certainly like Fitz," Nix said this week, per the Buffalo News. "[His performance] wasn't more than we expected because I knew Chan would get him to play better. We counted on that and he did. I really like him. I think he's got a lot of qualities you need. We just need to keep putting good players out there." Nix would not rule out using the No. 3 overall pick on a QB -- ESPN AFC East blogger Tim Graham notes that Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert would be the logical choices if they do -- but there are positions of greater need on the roster. As for our draft gurus, Mel Kiper, Jr. had the Bills going defense in Round 1, while Todd McShay had them going gaga for Gabbert:

- already knows the ins and outs of the 3-4 - excellent at 3 technique when Buffalo runs a 4 man front (if they run it) - good spin and swim moves, great bull rush - better against the run than Fairley - needs to work on staying low
I wouldn't mind picking up Dalton. I know people are a little scarred with Bowers... But picking him up in the second round would be a steal IMO
This times a billion. If someone would have told me would grab Bowers & Dareus I would have nutted. But Carolina may snag him up.
I don't give a fuck about workouts. If we have the chance, take BOWERS. No questions asked. I would go after Mallet before Dalton as well
i think mallett is a more prototypical NFL QB than dalton but i don't want him on my team such a huge fag
just realized the pats pick first so we could probably still get him but im starting to wonder how bad that knee is for him to fall this far
may be a reach or im not sure but Rudolph at TE may not be terrible, give us another "weapon" on offense after we sured up our need for DT already
true, idk i was just randomly thinking of guys i never get too in depth with draft coverage so im not sure who all is out there, just really hoping it's not fucking Dalton or Mallett
i want nothing to do with mallett and apparently bowers' knee is way worse than anyone expected so i dont blame them for not drafting him
