Lando is a secondary character. He wasn't Han, Luke, or Leia. That is want Finn was supposed to be.
Put some respect on Willrow Hood’s name
Yup, believe one of my major beefs with TLJ was throwing away the interracial romance and making Finn seem useless
Grizz Frix people. Come on.
They had too many characters.
You already had Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2D2, C3PO, and Lando. That’s seven characters to include in three films.
You then add: Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, Rose, and BB8. There’s another six.
So now you have 13 characters to try and fit in just three films, and the new characters need some sort of a backstory, right? No. Not enough time. It was doomed from the get go.
I remember amongst many other problems with TLJ was that I was listening to Rose tell her life story to Finn, and I couldn’t believe it: We don’t even know, or really care about this character, and we could be spending time building Finn or even Poe’s character.
I know it’s trendy to say TLJ is so great, but fuck that movie had as many issues as the other two.
Honestly it’s difficult for me to talk about the new trilogy without blood pressure rising when thinking about how they ruined Luke.
I mean he doesn’t even speak, and we see him for 30 seconds In the first film? What?
I remember watching the scenes with Abrams/Kasdan and crew talk about how it was hard to introduce Luke anywhere in TFA because the audience would be immediately drawn to whatever his character was doing and it would dilute the rest of the story ...
Well no shit. That’s what happens when you try and bring in the main character from a trilogy.
My god these people would have been better off getting UCLA film students to write the script.
Last one -
You only needed Rey, Finn and Kylo.
I like Poe, but too many characters.
This way you could do your force connection thing with Rey and Kylo, and make Finn a badass character, with a great backstory.
They were real cowards about that.
Fin literally joined the rebellion because he had a crush on Rey. He lead the suicide mission to rescue her. It was the most relatable thing about his character and they botched it.
People being vaguely mad at Disney know damn well it was the dumb bitch's fault for how that sequel trilogy went from every terribly idea she had and yet she's still got a job. Thanks a lot, Kathleen Kennedy.
Eh, a lot of people combined to fail that franchise.
The biggest disappointment to me was the failure to adhere to any themes with the whole thing. The original trilogy had the daddy issues, imperialism vs autonomy etc. I still can’t figure out what the overriding themes were in this latest trilogy.
Yeah and it started at the top.
Has it been revealed how many episodes are in Mando season 2?
Haven't read the full article, but I'm confused from the snippets how Boyega is talking about the minorities in the story being written horribly, but then says to leave JJ alone. JJ wrote/directed two of the three movies
I think his criticism is kind of dumb, personally. His character was good in the first one, but wasn't easy to move forward beyond that point. They tried some stuff and failed, but it's not like they benched him. His character just had the background that was better served for one movie than three.
Seemed like JJ wanted to do a love triangle thing with Rey, Kylo, and Finn. Then Rian decided to add Rose for Finn and focused on the Rey/Kylo thing, and then the internet went weird, people lost their minds, and we got the mess of a “conclusion” we did.
This. He has every right to be pissed that such a great character was botched in 2/3rd of the trilogy. But everyone was botched. It wasn’t because of his skin color. It’s because leadership failed the entire cast.
Agreed, but that still makes the criticism weird to me because he criticizes the way Rose was written out of the story and JJ wrote that story. I feel for Boyega because being in that universe can't be all that fun, especially when the movies legitimately disappoint. I just feel like he's venting his frustrations in a way that tries to make himself look better in hindsight, and I think it's somewhat unfair to throw those specific criticisms out there when the real issue was just incompetence at the top.
I think he’s completely justified. They clearly made an effort to put together a more diverse cast, which obviously is a good thing. They did nothing w most of the people of color in that cast. Whether that was an specific decision to push aside those characters storyline or just sheer incompetence (def the latter imo), the end result is a bad looking empty tokenism. Either way i dont blame Boyega for feeling like he was used mostly as a diversity prop. Especially as a guy who was such a big Star Wars fan.
It’s sad. He’s gone from a a dude all in to someone so jaded. Remember the clips of him watching TFA trailer for the first time. It was awesome. Now he hates it. Such a bummer.
That's definitely fair and I guess I'm just looking it from the perspective of "all the new characters except Rey and Kylo were a jumbled mess," which included people like Poe, too. His perspective would obviously be different.
I can understand why he feels that way. I don't think ultimately he was a diversity prop. I think he was a tough character to move forward after the first movie, and he got caught in the Johnson/Abrams/Disney mess in the last two movies like other characters did.
It's weird how much he hates Rian when JJ was the one that used him as a marketing ploy to try and hide the fact that Rey was the Jedi of the new trilogy. Rian actually gave his character some growth (even though people hated the story used to do so) before JJ just turned him into a generic action star that just yelled in TROS. Don't get me started on how JJ treated Kelly Marie Tran.
This is so dumb but I laughed
Sounds to me like John thinks Rian fucked the whole thing up with his shitty movie
Quite possibly. I still blame JJ. Rian obviously changed what JJ has in mind, but there was still a path forward with Finn after that movie. Finn got plenty of screen time in TLJ. But JJ was too busy worrying about adding Keri Russell and the Emperor and making sure Kylo got his mask back on to actually figure out what to do with Finn.
Here's the problem with that theory though. Luke Skywalker was botched. White dude. Captain Phasma was botched. White woman. General Hux, White guy.
If anyone should be complaining, its Gwendoline Christie. She was marketed to be the bad ass secondary villain to Kylo's main big bad and she ended up being nothing more than typical storm trooper cannon fodder with shiny armor.
The cast is littered with failed character arcs. It's not just the minority actors. The whole damn trilogy is filled with failures from behind the camera. It's an absolute travishamockery what happened to Finn and Rose. But they weren't the only ones. The whole cast is owed numerous apologies from Disney.
Liked for traveshamockery
The problem has been and always will be that they didn't just do a completely new trilogy away from the original story. We didn't need anymore skywalker shit, it's Star Wars. Tell a new story, it's no coincidence their two most popular things in this Star Wars revival was The Mandalorian and Rogue One.
I think Finn was doomed as a character soon as they decided not to kill Poe in TFA (which I believe was rumored, but Isaac said he wouldn't play the part of the character died). Once Poe was there for the long haul, it's hard to carve out a path for Finn to be a super important character in that trilogy. Rey's the one who has the force, and Poe is the one who is going to be the badass pilot/military guy. Finn's kind of stuck in the middle there.
That's why I say Finn's story was great in TFA, but it was always going to be really hard to make his character anywhere near the same level as Rey's the rest of the trilogy, and Poe was always going to be easier to write because of his background and the options that provided.
Poe dying saving Finn and becoming Finn's inspiration to become part of the Resistance would've been dope. But that takes balls something Disney clearly lacks or else we would've actually gotten a real trilogy and not whatever the hell this was.
Also let's not forget they made Finn a joke from the get go. Remember he only worked in sanitation in TFA.... Honestly TLJ treated Finn much better than TFA and TROS.
Also, what Boyega is saying about the Finn character seems somewhat similar to why Harrison Ford wanted Han to die in the original trilogy. Solo was a much better character, but the end result is kind of the same. It's hard to be a main character in a movie when one of the heroes has super powers and you don't.
I wonder how much he voiced his opinion during filming? He should have walked. 1/2 of a decent movie and the rest of the trilogy is trash.
My favorite part about the trilogy is how you had two major powers in the universe (First Order and New Republic) and one of the major power is quite literally never seen...... Like wtf
Started the new thrawn book this morning. I have super low expectations after the last couple. Only 5% in but I think this is going to be a good one. Basically setting up the world building of the Chiss and the poltical infighting ect.
Now that I’ve posted this, it will prob end up sucking
Question that's probably been asked-
Why is there another 3P0 type Droid at very beginning of a new hope?
Do any others appear?
So he's a common type of Droid like the R2's?
Yeah and I guess in canon it's common enough as a design type for a slave boy in the middle of nowhere to build one to that style and spec
I think the point in Anakin building is to show how uncommon he was..
And he worked at a droid shop....
Sure but he still built a robot that looked exactly like all the other models in the galaxy.
A droid built from spare parts is going to look like the droids from which the spare parts were taken.
This right here. They killed the EU (rightfully) so they could move away from all that nonsense, but in the end they just made the same kind of messy bullshit that was typical of the EU.
I always viewed 3PO as the Toyota Camry of droids
And if any of the uneducated want to experience the EU on all it's fuckery, I suggest the Expounded Universe podcast.
Protocol droids are a necessity for how many languages are in the universe
This feels like a subtle joke since 90% of everyone in the SW universe speaks English (Basic)
More about technocrat automation taking translator jobs
So does Jar Jar and he could have used a translator at times
Started Clone Wars last night. Never really seen any of the episodes of the automated series offered (maybe seen an episode or two of Rebels as my roommate and his ex were watching it through). Looking forward to it. Rebels will be next.
