Just got out of film. Thoughts: Spoiler 1. Not enough R2D2. He and C3PO were insignificant in comparison to BB8. 2. I liked how Rian created his own Star Wars universe. The kid at the end was the symbolism of that. 3. I thought the fight between Finn and Captain Phasma was awesome. 4. Great movie but still a lot to process. Episode IX they have to bring back Lando.
Spoiler As has been said by others, wow, a lot to process for sure. I think having just seen it, similar to what CF3234 said, I'm having a hard time separating my attachment to Luke from my overall perspective on the movie. Thought the movie was amazing, but wasn't a fan of how Luke went out. The whole "astral projection" thing was a cool idea, but was hoping he was really there and that after the order to fire on him was given that he would stop all the bolts like Kylo to the tenth power or just start dropping walkers with his power. Also thought that after the Yoda appearance it would have been cool for Luke to lift the X-Wing out of the water and come full circle, seeing it just sitting there real quick and then never coming back to it was a minor letdown. When he went, while I was somewhat expecting it when it happened, it was still like a punch to the gut of my childhood in a lot of ways. Going to be interesting to see what they do moving forward now with the current status of the Big 3 what it is, assuming as others have said that they'll rely heavily on force ghost Luke and I mean if force ghost Yoda can set a tree on fire, who knows what force ghosts are capable of. I believe the next movie will be the first of the Episodic ones to not have a living character with the last name Skywalker, right? Again, great movie overall, will definitely see it again multiple times, but hard for me to move on from that aspect of Luke right now. Lots of other thoughts that I'm sure will hit me tomorrow and with future viewings.
just got out Spoiler i have to think about it a lot more. my first reaction was that it was okay; i liked some things a great deal and i strongly disliked some things a fair amount. - i liked the throne room scene... i think. it's weird that, as others have written, that parallel the climax of the OT and yet that was midway through ep. 2 of this trilogy. i had no idea where the story was going. the rey/ben solo story (and their acting) is phenomenal. - the three perspectives on the ben solo/luke fight were great (the original lie, ben's version, and then luke's corrected version). - finn flying into the battering ram was a really great scene. i liked some of what luke was saying re: the jedi; that's what i wanted to hear with regards to their failure. rey's journey to the dark hole was cool. - leah surviving the way she did was dumb as shit. if you're going to do something like that, just have her get blasted into the ship when she's near the doorway or something. it was laughable, i thought. - luke's dialogue was pretty awful, i thought. i don't want snippy luke skywalker. i want distraught force user who has realized upon reflection that his religion he's devoted himself to is a failure. same thing with the brushing the shoulder thing. - who the fuck is going to train rey? and yoda as a force ghost can do shit? since when? - good god, the finn/rose romance was awful. A-W-F-U-L.
"I have to think some more about the Star Wars movie I just watched" Jesus Christ Sounds like it managed to incorporate some Rashomon, though. Nice.
I liked it. I have a feeling that people with either love or hate the movie. I think Episode IX can either enhance or hinder the Last Jedi. Spoiler I thought the acting was awesome and cinematography was beautiful. I didn't care for the Rose character at all. Captain Phasma sucks...... the Boba Fett of this trilogy. I knew Luke was going to die and still got teary eyed. I want force ghost Anakin to talk to Kylo in Episode IX, but it doesn't make sense story wise now and JJ doesn't have the balls to do it anyway. I wonder what type of lightsaber Rey will build and if she'll use the crystal from Anakin's lightsaber. I wonder what they'll kill off the Skywalker bloodline in IX. I will probably have more thoughts later.
Spoiler i thought it was okay. there's just something missing. no one who matters ever seems to be in any real danger. i thought 90% of the jokes were bad and forced, but maybe i'm just getting old and grumpy. those birds
Damn dude. Spoiler If you hate porgs, you can seriously fuck right off. What the hell is wrong with you?
Spoiler snokes bodyguards putting up a better fight than that old fuck did No sound during the kamikaze hyperspace probably made some physicist happy since there wouldn’t be any sound in space Felt like a weird time jump between first and second to suddenly have a much stronger first order and mini rebellion almost wiped out when in the first movie they were an unofficial thing confronting it while trying to get the new republic on their side and to step up and do something. What happened to Luke’s green lightsaber from the flashbacks? Probably should’ve been a giveaway that he wasn’t really there when he lit up the lightsaber that Rey and Ben had just broken. Sucked they didn’t show him lifting the xwing back out but probably included it so people wouldn’t make long YouTube videos in British accents asking how he got on that planet. What if that guy with the red flower wasn’t who they were supposed to find and mas knew they’d find the other guy?
there was a jedi smoking a cigarette outside the theater before i went in. smh it's hard enough out there for the jedi without having to deal with lung cancer.
Spoiler: Some Holy shit! moments Leia using the fucking Force. I can't already can't wait for the book where she learns to use the Fuorce, but ultimately refuses to walk that path. Yoda. "Missed you I have, young Skywalker!" The link between Kylo and Rey was cool. The battle in the throne room was amazing. Spoiler: Way too early Ep. IX speculation It will take place a few years from now. The FO has already essentially won right now. The Resistance (while never large) is left with literally only a Millennium Falcon's worth of folks. The intervening years will be spent building the Resistance back up. Finding and banding together all those allies in the Outer Rim and people like those children on Canto Bight grow who know that fighting the FO is the right thing to do. The movie will be a jump in time to a final conflict with the FO after the Resistance has rebuild it's strength
So you all did notice Spoiler The Jedi texts were on the Falcon at the end. Yoda did not destroy them. He knew that Rey had taken them already and wanted to fuck with Luke one last time (or use it as a teaching moment, whatever). I've seen more than a few people online saying that they missed that those were the Jedi books in that drawer.
Spoiler Leia flying through space was gayer than Jar-Jar Binks and should honestly be viewed through the same prism of "You're destroying the fucking saga with shit like this" as his character was. Could have done without 75% of the forced humor. It feels like Disney ran this story through the Marvel formula because for those movies it works really, really well so why not? For Star Wars, not so much. Even with all that said because the movie was so long it provided a ton of development and possible content for the future. The battle scenes were stunning and I find Kylo Ren as much more of a bad dude and much less of a pussy now which is what Star Wars needs, a real bad, bad guy.
Saw it last night and left underwhelmed. It wasn't bad by an stretch but maybe I just had to high of expectations. I left the theater wanting more than I got. There were some great parts and some not so great parts that could have been cut or at the least trimmed. Will definitely need to see it again to form a better opinion. I still think Rouge One is by far the best of the new movies.
Spoiler Thoughts: 1. Only thing I didn't like was Leia's flight back to the ship from the vacuum of space. Not that it happened (because that's totally fine, the Force is amazing), but the way it was shot. Looked really hokey and bad. Like real bad. Like it will always bother me. 2. Everything else was pretty much amazing. The Throne Room fight scene is the best lightsaber scene we will probably ever see... and that's great. 3. I knew from the moment he walked in that Luke wasn't physically there... they did a great job with that, though. 4. At Luke's death... 2 suns, looked like one setting and one rising... very nice. 5. I have no idea what to expect for Episode IX... Leia has to die somehow and her estate already said they don't want CGI again... sooooooo? Benicio del Toro needs to play a role (and I'm 99% sure this is how they sneak in a Lando cameo). I agree with whoever said there wasn't enough R2, he remains king of the droids and needs to be there more. I fully expect we get to see Rey build her own lightsaber... so that's gonna be great. 6. I have a whole mess of other thoughts, but I'll let those form more coherently as I watch it a couple more times in the next couple weeks.
Spoiler If you noticed, no one said "I have a bad feeling about this" My theory is BB8 says it in the beginning about Poe's plan. Leia even responds "I'm with the droid on this one"
Spoiler I really hope JJ doesn't retcon Rey's parentage in IX. It would be really disappointing to suddenly make her a Skywalker, Kenobi, etc. and just dismiss the whole anyone can be a hero narrative that Rian layered into the entire movie
Spoiler I knew Luke wasn’t there immediately. They made such an effort to show the red salt moving every time someone moved, then Luke shows up and makes zero impact on the ground. My first thought was that Luke was already dead but that was just around the corner.
Spoiler Someone else mentioned it but there were a lot of complaints and concerns about Kylo Ren as the villain and I feel much better about that now
Spoiler The lightsaber was the giveaway Luke wasn't actually there. Is there something I can read to get some more Snoke back story? Having just watched VII and VIII his development is lacking Thought they did a good job overall, really excited for IX
Spoiler When Leia and the gang got sucked out into space I sadly thought it my head "It was not a trap." RIP in peace to a legend
Spoiler They reeeeeally needed to give him more anger to play with for the whole emo kid thing to work. This film obviously does that in spades. Hard not to feel for him, just like Anakin. That’s what makes bad guys work.
Spoiler I thought this movie did a good job of him growing thru the whiny emo kid we saw in VII to a more mature, yet still impulsive villain. Adam Driver did a hell of a job selling it too.
It's sad that because this is a Star Wars movie he won't get the credit he deserves in the acting community
Spoiler I agree that he did a great job of selling that he grew a lot. It's even more impressive that this movie essentially takes place immediately after VII and goes for about another 36 hours so the growth had to happen fast but still be flawed. outstanding performance by Driver.
Another thought Spoiler For people who don't like the Kylo Ren character...... he did something that Darth Vader couldn’t do. /SPOILER]
I’m not going through the spoilers if this was mentioned But did people notice... Spoiler The kid at the end is force sensitive. The broom just gets pulled into his hand when he puts his hand out Force sensitive kid inspired to join the resistance
Imo this movie’s main courses and characters were money and I don’t think he cared much about the secondary and tertiary ones. Just kind of had to do what he had to do with what JJ gave him. Very much looking forward to what he can do with his own beginning movie
Spoiler: Spoiler As has already been mentioned, the Leia transport back to the ship was awful, cringe worthy (jar jar) stuff. Loved Ren's character development. Loved Yoda's return and loved the defeat of the resistance. Under Rey and whatnot, the rebuilding of the resistance should be a main focus IMO for the next movie. Hated the Rose character and Phasma sucked as well. Like I mentioned earlier, still very enjoyable movie 8/10.
