My wife at first was like "hell no, no minivan," but after having doors open and seeing how easy it is for others with vans/sliding doors she wants one now. So my old research is coming back to fruition. But FML buying a new house, renovating some things, and buying a new car. :killme:

When we switched our oldest from a crib to a bed with rail he still yelled for us in the am to come let him out of bed. This went on for a few months and was glorious.

It is weird. When he first climbed out of his crib the first couple times, we laughed and applauded him out of his range for his physical prowess and skill but corrected him and said he can not do that unless we are in the room and tell him he can. So now when he is in timeout or nap time or bedtime he stays in the crib, even though he can easily get out. Then when we come to get him, we let him crawl out and he loves it and likes to show off. I think he sees it as a reward for being a good boy.

We’re in need of a new ride as well. We really couldn’t care less about what we drive, so we’re typically very pragmatic when it comes to purchases. Recent events have us seriously looking at Class B’s and conversions as a second vehicle so we can test the nomad life / nope the fuck out of society and regroup with a permanent exit plan if needed. And hey if we collectively figure out a way to not make my kid start developing PTSD when he walks into kindergarten due to active shooter drills and threats in a few years, we will made some expensive but good memories along the way

And just as a fun fact I didn't know before starting this: you can find a high quality used conversion or class b for around 100k. Seems absurdly expensive until you learn you can finance the stupid thing over 15+ years. I mean it still is absurdly expensive, but who's going to come after me to collect the tail end of those payments when the US collapses and we're jetting around south america

My wife drives a Pilot and it’s been great. The captains chairs were not in many males when we got it so that is clutch. And as the boys have gotten older it has plenty of space. You don’t realize how many 14 and 15 year olds parents don’t take them to do shit so you’re essentially the fucking friend group Uber. Plus sports equipment only gets to be more and bigger.

10/10 would recommend. It’s not flashy but it’s a monster

Speaking of minivans vs SUVs. My brother and his wife had decided to get her a brand new Telluride. Everything was set, they were going in to sign the paperwork and drive it off the lot. When they get there the sales guy was like look I'm not trying to get you out of this BUT you had mentioned interest in a mini van and we just got this pristine used one in the other day that is like $15k less than the Telluride. He took a 5 second look at it, and without consulting his wife says SOLD WE'LL TAKE IT...she wasn't thrilled. And then like a month later he bought a $20k boat

Son is almost 3 months and dad Fartz knows he and mom need to start putting money away for college.

I’m tying to determine if I go the 529 route or invest the money in mutual funds, Roth, etc. The major downside of the 529 is the 10% hit if he didn’t go to college. I am also not stock savvy one bit, so the mutual funds and stocks seems risky, but it seems like it may yield the bigger benefit ($$$) in 18 years. I’m stuck.

do you have the captain seats? Our's has a bench in the back so only way for the big kid to get back there is climb over. it's doable but much easier with captain seats.

nope. I have Touring model with the bench. If someone wants to get into the 3rd row (which we rarely ever use) you're going through the trunk. But really we have 2 kids and keep the 3rd row down for the extra space for (waves hand at everything)

ah yeah, i would imagine 3 car seats across the bench would be tight. We have 3 so got a car with bucket seats to avoid that. the 5 year old runs back there and can click himself in. very gratifying after 5 years of having to do it!

With the first, it was about 2.25 after a trip when his car seat was front facing and there was no going back. With #2 it was on her 2nd birthday because she was terrible to listen to cry and whine. With the 3rd, he turns 2 in a month and we will likely wait 6+ months because he is smaller and handles it well.

My wife is a car seat stickler and has sort of turned me into one. If she had it her way our kids would be rear facing till they hit one of the weight or height limits. I am not as anal as her but god damn some parents out there really either A. Don't have a clue or B. The old "mother knows best" really putting their kids at risk switching them wayyyyy to early.
I don't know that any 1 year old that should be forward facing to be honest, but really age shouldn't even be mentioned, it's all height/weight. Best piece of advice there is keep them rear as long as possible. Pay attention to the height/weight guidelines of your seat. Also, at certain weights the clips are not as effective as pulling the seat belt through so check your car seats for that as well.

The day she turned 2 we moved her to front facing because she had hit the size limit months prior. You need to check your local laws and manufacturer recommendations. In WA the law said minimum of 2 years old, so we followed that.

My son met the height and weight threshold that many sources provided at 1 year. But we used common sense and left him in almost a year longer. So basically, you just proved my point from my post before made. No one agrees!

529 is tax advantaged (ie no income tax on gains) so I think that benefit far outweighs a potential 10% fee. You can also change the beneficiary of the 529 pretty easily if you had another kid that needed it.

Both of my kids' 529 plans are with Vanguard in a targeted date fund. There's a fund for each year and I pick the one that corresponds to when they turn 18. Vanguard automatically adjusts the investments so it's most "risky" in the early years and then will slowly transition to more stable investments as the target date gets close. It's a pretty hands-off approach and has worked well for me.

I'm sure most places do this, but Vanguard also has a web site you can send to people that allows them to deposit money. It's pretty handy if family members/friends want to gift money to the kid.

I really don't think any chart/recommendation should be based off age. I could see many a parents opening that chart seeing forward facing starting at 1 and throwing their 12 month old 20th percentile kid forward facing. And that's what I meant by at 1. 12 months and 21 months is a huge discrepancy plus the discrepancies between kids. At the end of the day like I said the best piece of advice there is is "keep them rear facing as long as possible". And I'm not trying to act all high and mighty cause we switched our oldest when he could have been rear longer. There just really seems to be a lot of parents who either ignore or don't read a lot of the safety information out there and in what they see as helping their child because of reasons like "well I wouldn't want to be rear facing".

Rear facing is truly the safest position they can be in. Wife has seen plenty of ER car wreck patients where the kid in the rear-facing seat is just fine and the rest of the passengers are in bad shape. But hey if your kid meets the guidelines and screams the whole time rear facing but doesn't front facing, front facing is probably a safer setup.

That's fine and there are plenty that do. Including the American Academy of Pediatrics. I'm sorry but I won't agree that putting a definitive age on it is good guidance. Again, that's not to say a 1 year couldn't be an appropriate height and weight to switch.
    1. All infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the seat's manufacturer.
    2. All children who have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit for their car safety seat should use a forward-facing car safety seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed by the seat's manufacturer.
