My son is 11 weeks old today. He is still a ball of colic no matter what combination of formula, medicine, etc we try. His reflux has gotten better over the past few weeks, but he's still a long ways away from sleeping flat/in his crib. This has easily been the most challenging stretch of my life and I feel like I'm being being robbed of all those baby feels because my little dude is just so upset all the time.

I also want to punch everyone who tells me, "Don't worry...it gets better."

Yeah that sucks man. You are going through the hardest part of being a dad right from the get go. It hurts seeing/thinking/feeling like your kid is in pain and there's nothing you can do. Hope it passes soon.

    Dont worry, it gets better.

Just kidding man. As a father of 4 i always tell my friends that the first 4 months pretty much suck. You have a baby that doesn't smile, doesn't reciprocate love, and just cries and shits. After the first 3-5 months they start smiling and getting on a regular schedule and it gets much easier and much more fun.

The new baby slept for 5 straight hours last night, so we were happy about that. Maybe that will continue, but I doubt it.

yeah, expense is definitely a concern. We have been talking a little bit about swimming too, he's pretty good at it but i'm not sure how he would take to competing.
    Thanks for the insight

I have two daughters - 12 and 2. A babysitter and a baby respectively. I highly recommend this approach. I think I need to participate ITT.

The 12 year old is from a one night stand. Not my wife's kid.

    Doesn't matter had sex.

    And have full custody.

My 12-year-old really liked swimming laps a few years ago, so we decided to try the local pre-comp swim club/team. Within a month he wanted to quit because, even though he loved swimming, he didn't like being told by a coach what to do and how fast to do it, forget about the water in your goggles and keep swimming, yada yada. Too bad, because Chelsea the swim coach had a killer swimmer's body, and at least I was getting something out of the practices.

Anyone have advice for dealing with a stubborn child? My 5 year old is the most stubborn child I have even met. He is potty trained but if he decides he doesn't want to stop playing he will just shit/piss himself. He will refuse to eat meals and has gone to school many mornings without breakfast. His teachers think he behind the rest of his class but when we review the material at home he knows it but apparently refuses to answer his teachers. I am coaching him in soccer and half the time he plays really hard. The rest of the time if he decides he doesn't want to play he will just stand in the middle of the field like a statue.

We have tried everything from positive reinforcement to spankings. Nothing seems to faze him. If he decides not to do something nobody can motivate him. We had a special education teacher evaluate him just to make sure it wasn't something else. She said he was very intelligent but that when he decided he was done with a task that was it.

I would appreciate any advice you guys could give me. My wife babied him a lot when he was younger because he almost died as a baby and was in and out of the hospital his first year with respiratory issues. I put a stop to that over a year ago but it has not mattered.

Sounds like a more or less typical 5 year old.

Try a star chart to earn small gifts. Or have him checked for constipation. Kids who are severely constipated have accidents.

I want to throw out a big fuck you to doctors that tell pregnant women they've gained too much weight. It's bad enough having a 34+ week pregnant wife at home, but holy shit she gained 4 pounds in 2 weeks and needs to keep a food journal now... Nevermind that she's gained a total of 35 pounds in 34 weeks, they said 1 pound per week, she's pretty fucking close doc. And oh yeah, my parents were here for 9 days and my dad includes bacon and potatoes in every meal he cooks.

We tried the chart for almost a year and a half. It had little to no effect on him. He has had some constipation issues so you are probably dead on about that. That is the only behavior I am not all that concerned about.

Been up rocking the new baby out in the den to give mom a break. She just wants to be held so no repeat from last night. So far the 2-1/2 year old is excited she's here. I imagine that will change some later when she realizes it's not leaving.

Went camping with my 7-year-old this weekend and his Cub Scout pack. He spent half the time in the tent, playing with Pokemon cards.

I hate those things and their poorer cousin, Yu-Gi-Oh (which he likes better, but we temporarily took them away for some reason). Fuck the Japanese and their shitty cartoons.

Word of advice from an old hat at this dad stuff: You know that song, "Cats in the Cradle" about the dad that doesn't have time for his son then suddenly, the son doesn't have time for the dad? That shit is true. Make time for your kids.

I'm lucky that my job allows me to be there for him, even if I only get to see him every other week, its still a lot more than some dads get, I try to never forget that.

So Half Knight is on the very high end of the ASD spectrum, he really only has a couple issues. One is communication and socializing, that's pretty easy for him in most scenarios though. The bigger issue we have with him is food. The way this manifests itself is, when it's something he doesn't like, he will chew the food for like 10 minutes per bite, and we will end up sitting at the table for an hour arguing with him for not eating the shit we put on his plate. Occasionally it will turn into a full meltdown when he sees certain things he doesn't like in his food (had enchiladas and he freaked out when he saw the green and red peppers from the salsa).

Anyone have any experience in this with kids or relatives? My current attempt is to set a timer, dinner will last 30 minutes, when the timer goes off, he loses time from fun things he wants to do for every bite left on his plate. Will see how that works out. I almost dread dinner every night, it is literally the only issue we have with him on 99% of the weeks he is with us, he's such a good kid, it kills me every time this shit comes up.

I took little Odin to the liquor store with me on Saturday. He likes going because he knows he's going to get a sucker. I was paying for my booze and he was standing behind me playing with his little Batman action figure with me. The clerk struck up a conversation with him.

    Clerk: "Is that Batman?"
Little Odin: "Yeah. He's a superhero." *about 30 seconds of unintelligible ramblings about Batman*
Clerk: "Does Batman's cape make him fly faster?"
Me: "No, he wears it because it matches his underwear" (referring to the fact that Batman wears his underoos outside his pants)
Little Odin: drops his pants and looks at his underwear "Nuh uh. These are Ninja Turtle underwear."

So we just moved the 20 month old's mattress from the frame down to the floor. I have no idea if this will help. It's been like having to re-sleep train, but there's no crib to essentially trap them in so they just get up and walk out of the room. She'll lay there if we're sitting next to her so I think we're going to start the thing where you move the chair back a foot every night.

The last two nights our 5-month old, who has generally been a good sleeper, decided he doesn't like sleeping anymore. Every time he wakes up he cries instead of self-soothing back to sleep. It has been about once an hour. The only thing that will make him stop is picking him up and either nursing him to sleep or walking him around the bedroom until he falls asleep in my arms and can be placed back in his crib. He is giving some signs he may be teething so I'm really hoping it is related to that and this doesn't continue.

We fed him his first solid food on Sunday. What a mess! He improved a lot on Monday but it was me feeding him on Monday and my wife on Sunday so it could have been some element of who was feeding him. I think she found it really cute to have it all over his face to take pictures and send to our mothers while I was focused on minimizing my cleanup.

Pretty sure at 5 months their sleep cycle changes a bit and acts more like an adult. We went through this same thing for about 2 weeks about 2 months ago. Our little one figured out how to get her self back to sleep. My only advice is try not to intervene, as you don't want to have to rock, nurse, walk him every time he wakes up or more importantly needs to go to sleep at night. Stay strong and you will get through it fast.

We've been fighting with little hippo not wanting to go to sleep the past few nights, in my head the worst thing is to pick her up, or engage her. I would go in, pat her back, and try to keep her laying down. If she went to stand up, I'd pick her up just to lay her back down on her belly- took about 30 minutes but it worked.

Last night she turned on the roomba- she's done it before, but normally we're right there to turn it off before it gets going. Last night we weren't sitting right there, and didn't move quick- she turned it on, and it started back out then turned right for her. I've never seen such a look of panic and horror on a babies face. It was hilarious- she didn't cry, just looked scared, and once we picked her up she started laughing and clapping. So that may be our new fun game

The problem has been her waking up and crying for an hour. We moved the bed from the game to the floor for safety because she would stand up and start jumping and we were afraid she lose her balance and fall over the rail.
