15-year-old sophomore son doesn't talk to us parents much anymore. He's had a stomach bug since Saturday that's kept him home, so when we emailed his carpool driver yesterday morning she wrote back "Oh, I'm sure he told you, but it's so cool that he's going to prom!" First we'd heard about it. Turns out he was invited by a junior girl last week, said yes, she's excited, and now he needs a fucking tux by Friday. Asked him when he was planning on telling us all this, and he said "I dunno." This is all very unexpected. Two days ago I'd never heard my son talk about girls, or express any interest in them. Now I have to send him on his way Friday night with a corsage and a pack of condoms. Oh, he used to climb out of his crib, too.

I know I got to that point once I turned like 13, so now I'm thinking back to figure out why I got that way so that I can hopefully keep it from happening with my kids. I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with how you communicate with them as kids and the type of relationship you have
Found out today my kid's daycare is closing in three weeks. The owner sold the building to a developer and let everyone know this morning. We are lucky that my mom lives here. 20 employees and over 100 kids will have to find a place to go quick. Toying with the idea of just going the nanny route moving forward.
easter at MIL's place usually a pretty packed event (that story belongs in the shitty family thread though), but it was just us so the boy dominated the egg hunt this year
Walking around the neighborhood tonight with the family because the 2 year old got a new toy shopping cart from MIL and all she wanted to do was push it outside. She was following me and the dog and every time the dog lifted his leg to pee on something, our 2 year old ran over and lifted her leg at the same area. It was hilarious.
My 2 year old got food poisoning Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I didn't sleep at all, he slept in 10 minute spurts in between bouts of vomit. We had to take him to the ER yesterday where all they did was give him some Motrin, so that will be a fun bill. Kids being sick is a nice dynamic you don't realize until you're a parent. "I want you to get better so you can stop being sick, but I also want you to get better because you're being really fucking annoying right now."
Welp. Both of my 18 yr olds are in boot camp now. Whole house is sad. Even my nerves of steel 10 year old is emotional. Wife has been crying. Sucks. Got a letter from Chris though and he's doing well On the fun side the 10 year old had his first basketball tournament last weekend and they tied for 1st. I forced him to take a picture and he's clearly excited about it
I guess I can post this in the dad's thread since there's no swingset thread. I built my girls a swingset last year.
And I stole it from them to put a bench swing on. i moved the bench swing and planted some confederate jasmine on each side. It should grow up the swing pretty quickly. It's an evergreen with a fragrant flower.
Now I'm in the process of building my girls a "replacement" swing. It's 2, 4"x6" beams that are 16' long, bolted together to span the 20' gap between trees. I should have it finished tonight.
Anyone have any tips with teething? Our baby didn't fall asleep until midnight last night and was up at 345 and has been ever since. Nothing has worked for us.

Neither has worked. Tried the frozen rag/fruit/paci etc. Tylenol or advil hasn't either. Just went and found the teething tablets and that has seemed to help a little. fiancé refuses to use baby orajel so thats off limits. We were lucky and have had a good baby, hardly any crying or anything but this teething mess has been a nightmare.

just got back from getting her 4 month vaccinations and she only cried for 30 seconds and was smiling and back to normal after that.
My wife got some teething tablets that helped. I think she dissolved them in water and rubbed them on the boy's gums with her finger. Also, we definitely alternated ibuprofen and acetaminophen for a while. They're different drugs, so you can alternate them like every 2-3 hours. If he's in that bad a shape, I suggest both the teething tablets and the pain relievers.
Is rubbing bourbon on a baby's gums taboo now? My grandma told me to do it when mine were teething and it was a godsend.
don't think so, any alcohol works from what I've told. Also, supposedly pure vanilla extract works the same way. basically numbs the area.
We use teething tablets and I find they work well. They dissolve right away so even if your kids doesn't have teeth you can feed him a few of these one at a time to help with the pain. Also, my whole family got some sort of mouth sickness a couple weeks ago. It was fucking terrible. Like one of the most painful sicknesses. A sickness like I have never had before in my life. So I ate almost an entire bottle of those teething tablets and they do work lol.

My parents' church was replacing their playground set. We asked them what they were doing with the old one and they were just going to trash it. We've gone out and taken what we could down and the contractor putting the new one in is taking the poles up for us. Apparently whoever put it in found a sale on concrete so he had trouble getting the poles out. They're broke one, but the rest are out. Now we just need to put it up at our house.

The stuff at the bottom of the slide is duct tape. We think we can do a fiberglass repair on it and not have to replace it. The chickens won't normally have access to it but it would be interesting seeing them climb all over it.
Hey everybody. New to the thread. I always saw the old one and wanted to get in but I have a thing about joining a thread without reading it all and I didn't want to read 300 pages. Wife stays home with our 10 month old in Minneapolis. Her folks live in Rochester MN so we see them all the time. My folks are in Nebraska and have only seen her on four occasions. I love being a dad but I'm always bummed my folks keep missing her milestones. Anyway, cheers.
Yes. Some dr. Told us it wasn't hand foot and mouth if there wasn't any sores on the hands or feet though. So idk what it was. I had originally assumed that it was hand foot mouth but that the virus strain must not have been one that causes hand and foot sores. I got no clue but that shit was fucking terrible.
Jealous of you in 2 ways. First I want to move back to the best city in the country and my home of south MPLS and second because my wife was a stay at home mom until we admitted that to accomplish our goal of eliminating all of our non-student loan debt in the next 2 years we need 2 incomes. Sucks your folks aren't around as much as you'd like though
My wife goes back to work tomorrow. I am terrified of being alone with the kid for 14 hours at a time, but it's time to get this show on the road. The air is thick with sadness/passive aggressive cuntiness/disdain because her time off is over. I certainly have sympathy, but I can't take the extra crazy much longer.
So my wife promised our 3 and 5 year old that we would take them to Chuck E Cheese today if they slept all night in their beds all week. Well, they did and we had to pay up. Normally, I dread that place because it's insanely crowded. However, most people think they open at 10am every day. Turns out they open at 9 on Saturdays, so I made sure as hell we're walking in that door at 9:01. Turns out this is AMAZING. We were the only people in the place for at least a half hour and it turns out that they have to test every ticket offering machine every day before they open. They all had at least 4 tickets sticking out...and the staff said they're always first come first serve. So, my 5 year old spent about 10 minutes gathering about 100 tickets. Cliffs: If you have to go to Chuck E Cheese, go as soon as they open.
