What kind of tippet do you guys use for your fly rods? Have you switched over to monofiliment in lieu of tippet?

i use nylon tippet. i played with fluorocarbon but always broke my knots with it. trouthunter is my favorite. i only keep 4x, 6x, and 6.5x. if i want higher i have a spool 8lb mirage mono.

i use a 7' or 9' 4x leader with a tippet ring. for dries and nymphing i start with that on my 4wt. i'm gonna start tying tight line leaders soon and i'll pre-tie them onto spools for a quick change out.

i think fluro is supposed to be stiffer and sink faster, but your cast is going to determine sink rate more than anything.

Correct. You can tell by the black stripe near it's eye. A northern pike doesn't have that.

i've seen osprey, herons, and eagles in this area, but never any of those( i had to google them tbh). we're a few hours from the coast, do they range that far inland?

i did see an otter swimming around yesterday and that's a rare sight.

I've seen them pretty far inland, though they do typically stay in and around more coastal waterways. Hard to tell a bird where it can and can't go, though.

I always get really excited to see an otter, even if it means fishing is shot. I could watch them do their thing for hours.

Nothing like a slot snook! Last one I caught was last May so had to throw it back. Going out on the 27th of this month to try to get one before the season ends. Had a slot or over slot one break me off on my dock yesterday on a shrimp. Almost impossible for me to get one that big when I'm the dock without breaking me off.

We were fishing off a jetty with live croakers that we caught earlier in the day on Fish Strips (was skeptical at first, but those damn things work).

My buddy caught the first, was 31.5. Tore about 30 yards of line out as it made a run up the jetty.

Caught mine no more than 10 minutes later. One hell of a fight and I totally understand the hype around them now.

Frying mine up tonight. I am excite.

Went looking for Cobia around the manatee and had no luck. Brought shrimp and switched it up for some trout. Currently being smoked on the egg.

Finished 2nd in my first bass tournament today.

    1.55 lbs

There was no bite. A hard thunderstorm pushed through that started at blastoff and lasted 90 mins. We waited until the lightning cleared in the truck. Missed two bites. One old man turned in a 1.91 fish and won it all. Less than 10 boats.

Sometimes you only need one fish.

2 or 3 years ago, there was a pro muskie tournament on Green Bay in Wisconsin. There were 50-60 boats, each boat with 2 professional muskie fishermen. Over the course of the 3 day tournament, a grand total of ZERO fish were caught.

Had a charter out of Tampa bay a couple months ago, with little cooperation from the weather we only caught a few trout.

Going surf fishing this weekend in Rosemary on the panhandle. This novice is open for advice. Probably just going to get some live shrimp and see what happens at dusk and dawn.

Surf fishing is tough. Best bet is to go expecting to sit in the sand with a beer in hand and that's about it. It's so incredibly hit or miss. I usually just buy pompano rigs with pyramid weights, then peel the shrimp so they're mushy shrimp nuggets. Whiting and other fish love them. Flip side is that taking the shell off the shrimp makes it easy for the smaller fish to suck them right off the hook

Buy fish bites in sand flea flavor if possible. Pompano have been crushing them up here.

Have they spawned there yet? All of ours were caught in the creek mouth, males were milking and all the females still had eggs.

Was wondering. Our water levels at Texoma have been low, think they've been staged up waiting for rain/current.

thunderstruck you know how to read the wave breaks and whatnot to find the troughs, right? That's key in having any sort of success in surf fishing.

Also, clams do relatively well if you can find some. But as Norm Peterson alluded to, anything sand flea is money

Yeah, I know down here you can find snook in the troughs but I'm not sure if snook are up that far north.

I'm guessing they will be pretty rare up there. However, pompano, whiting, etc all hang in the troughs. Surf fishing is weird because the fish are often closer to shore than you'd initially expect. I usually bring 2 rods and fish the first 2 troughs

Yeah not many snook in this part of the state. That would be quite rare. Pompano have been running though. A few bull reds as well.

Yeah there is a brackish lake that, depending on tides, dumps into the ocean and has had some decent reds caught. Probably going to set up shop there if it's flowing.

I have a 10. Not great at throwing it but enough to catch what I need. Learning how to throw is invaluable.

A couple lady fish, a couple catfish, and one (under size) flounder.

No clue where the original fish came from way back when, but all of the browns currently in the river are wild/stream born fish. They stopped stocking them in either 02 or 04. And I agree, they're the best looking browns I've ever seen.
