This guy just had his first fish hooking experience
By hooking it in my leg
Luckily he reacted properly and just sat his pole down so it didnt get worse
Barb was just barely in, so I didnt even have to cut the hook
Any of y'all been offshore out of Galveston?
A SoCal big bass "legend" exposed as a cheater.
i didn't remember the guy until i saw the bassmaster magazine cover from 2001. i was a member back then and had that issue.
So kayak got a hole in it. Flounder have been on fire and I have a lot of video to edit and post.
this was a fascinating read. fuck that guy.
never knew how they restocked lakes so fast before
thats one method they use.
local fb group had a post of an osprey they thought needed to be freed on the beach down here - turns out he wasnt stuck, just had a talon inside an adolescent tarpon
Caught my first red off top water and been doing really well with flounder. Gonna target some juvenile tarpon soon.
Spoiler: Photo dump
it took a year of trying but i got a freshwater drum on fly. also another smallie
You need to put all of this on the insta and become a fly fishing influencer HOOSINSC
i do have these on insta, but i don’t think im the brand ambassador type
Booked a charter fishing trip for sunday for redfish. they guy fishes the area i kayak fish in so im interested in learning what he uses during the tides etc. There are also some 1 foot to 5 foot tarpon in the ICW where i fish, we may try to target them as well. Im stoked, taking my dad and my FiL.
I feel like im hitting the next step fishing my area, can catch fish at high or low tide, but its too damn hot to put a full day out there. Hopefully, i can figure it out before my kid comes. My fishing days may be limited.
Good luck. Baby tarpon are the hardest fish to figure out, imo. Fly fishing for them is the best way, but still need to figure out the pattern. I’ll take a 5-20 pounder over an Oceanside migrating fish any day.
Supposedly a white swimmming mullet or mirror lure will catch them. I have only seem them swimming, i havent seen them swirling like the big boys. I also had spooked a manatee recently and he almost flipped me.
Report back pls. We're just getting settled in Fernandina and I need to scratch this itch before our second comes
Reds but anything really. I've seen a few guys on insta pulling a lot of tarpon out of the Satilla lately
ive been catching some reds, im about to attempt to cut up a youtube of that last few i caught. Will post it in a bit, I fish from a kayak but would be more than willing to answer any questions on them.
If they are what I call happy rolling, and holding to a spot then I think you are on the right path. If they are rolling and going to the bottom, they are tougher. Try mirrodine minis. Swap out the crappy trebles for some good in line single circle on each end (google or YouTube).
somehow my SD card isnt reading and saying i need reformat and ive lost all my files from the past 10 or so fishing trips.
from your gopro files? dang man
Yeah I had about 10 videos of redfish and a ton of flounder and a bunch of me cussing when losing a flounder.
I was very close to buying a kayak a few years ago, then found a couple of guys that had boats and befriended them.
Just bought a truck and seeing your pics/vids is making me consider getting one again. Catching flounder is incredibly underrated imo
I love the kayak, especially in the waters where I fish.
They are tough as fuck to catch. I feel them bite, keep the line remotely tight and let them chew for 15 seconds or so, them set the hook and hope the fish has chewed it enough.
Redfish litterally engulf the shit out of the bait.
What do you use? We usually throw gulp shrimp on a jighead and catch just about anything. Of course, my friends have been hooked on offshore for the past few years so I haven’t done inshore in a good while.
Snook is really the only thing we target specifically and that’s an entirely different approach.
Gulp shrimp on a jig head.
im glad i don’t film myself. i lost 5 flies in 20 minutes today. then the wind picked up and made casting a bitch. so many f-bombs.
Most flounder will annihilate the shit out of your bait if you're fishing artificial. They dont blow their cover for the fun of it. Youll have to be patient if fishing live or dead bait though.
They hit it hard but a lot of times they grab the tail and let work their way up. I am landing way more by being patient and letting them gnaw before setting the hook.
Yep. I’ve had some be aggressive as shit and hit hard, other times it feels like you’re caught on a plastic bag.
Had one hold the tail of my bait on the bottom for 15 seconds, set the hook and left the flounder with the tail. They aggravate the shit out of me, but the big ones are fun
I’ve watched some ambush my gulp before, cool as shit to watch them chase
I had one come out the water. Dude was is 6 inches of water just waiting
Picked up a new Sage Foundation 5wt off ebay, planning to sell my recon once it gets back from orvis (over 2 months at this point) and buy a good 5 wt. Love the Radian but not sure I should go that hard. Mid-range Sage or Scott may be the ticket.
Love hate relationship with orvis continues. I love my 8wt H3 and hydros reel. Picked up another hydros (5-7) reel last week off the 50% off table at local fly shop. Good upgrade over my mid-access 5wt, glad I now have full backups for the Healing Waters vets who don't have full gear.
Heading to Apalachicola in November in my kayak. Anyone fly fished the flats down there?
ive always thought they got good marks for their returns. thats sucks.
how often are you taking vets out?
Not in a few years. You got a guide or bringing a boat? If bringing a boat, I can provide a few spots that were good for fall/winter redfish
I'm pretty bummed. Reinforced the the idea that they are retail clothing shop first, fly rod maker second. Had a nice conversation with the guy but the lack of urgency is frustrating. It wasn't even looked at for 7 weeks.
Twice this summer, they've been taking them every weekend the last month or so. Had a guy who defused roadside bombs catch an 18' striper on the 5 wt recon I mentioned above.
Sage Foundation I ordered Friday arrived today, took it out in the back yard to cast and I really like it. Can only imagine how sweet the X is.
Im wanting a new 2500/3000 reel that is light, i have a 4000 on an ugly stick and the thing ways a ton. I dont want to break the brank either though.
Pflueger is a great option.
My diawa BG is great, kinda want to try a stradic but that would cost some money
Stradics are sweet. Just depends on what you want to spend. Might be able to find a good end of season deal.
Penn Fierce III Reel
Coming from a big Stradic guy. Stradic’s are absolutely outrageously priced now and I like this reel compared to Shimano’s mid priced reels. Get this and spend a little more on the rod, imo. Rod is more important unless you are just bait soaking.
The new Daiwa BGs are nice also
I have a 2000bg and it has an issue with the anti reverse sometimes. You like the fierce over the battle?
