Yesterday I hiked into the Chattooga. Caught over 15 rainbows, many on dry flies, so great fun. Also had my first double, but the double was a chub. Spoiler
Today I decided to go to Panthertown Valley vs the drive to the Snowbird. Caught 15-20 little brook trout all on dry flies. Was able to get my first successful bow and arrow cast and sight fished several of them. Also found these light cahill's flying around. I had one I had tied when I first started and put it on and caught 3-4 on it. Then on the way home I stopped where I knew there were native wild brook trout in SC. I managed to catch one and had several others briefly on. Got him out of this spot between the white water. Could only dab with about 6" of tippet due to the logs.
My FIL gifted me a guided fly trip. Going on Friday to the dream stream in Lake George, CO. This will be my first guided trip and I'm super excited! If anyone has tips/advice for a better experience I'd love to hear them.
Just listen to the guide, ask them to give you pointers on your casting. Maybe even ask to watch them fish a stretch to see if you can learn anything in how to approach it (assuming it's not a float trip).
Wading trip. I already talked to the guide and told him I'm a fly fishing novice and just want to learn as much as possible. It's a 1 on 1 guided trip and he seemed more than willing to explain everything. Any idea what the average tip is for these trips? Google seems all over the place.
good thing you are going on a weekday, although Friday is sort of the weekend. when i fished the Dream stream it was a madhouse, like 20 anglers stacked up in a 100 yard stretch.
well the guides are pretty good at getting to a spot and staking their claim on a stretch. they should take care of you.
Recommendation for a decent (sub $100) spinning reel? Ultralight, mainly panfish. I'm still loving my Zebco 11t's, but am curious what's good out there. I'm using 5' and 5'6" Rapala ultralight rods. Maybe a reel for my bigger Ugly Stik, too. Bass/walleye type stuff. Up to a couple few pounds. Good luck with the fly fish wading trip, we have good trout water up here and learning fly fishing is something I'd like to do someday.
Damn, I just looked at my oakleys that I use for fishing. Lens are so fucked. I also lost my smith Croma pops apparently or my kid found them and hid them. I have some bolle I got off slick deals, but I’m debating on replacement lens for the Oakleys or trying to find some inexpensive yet quality ones for the water bc they take a beating with saltwater and and random shit in a kayak. I’m really pissed about my smiths lowdown 2
Guides have been pushing these recently on social in my area. Wonder if that are actually good https://bajiosunglasses.com/?gclid=...FMI0ehuGDZU6FS1tB8jdtEd8VM3HQcWEaAp61EALw_wcB
that’s great. follow a few ig accounts that snorkel and film fish. i can watch hours of that. the pair of smiths i just replaced were lowdown 2s. i love wayfarer style glasses.
If neither of y’all have been to the Conasauga snorkel hole, I highly recommend it. I usually make it up there once a summer and it is a truly remarkable experience.
I’m a cyclist and have a pair of Oakleys that look awful but I swear they’re the best set of lenses that I have...even for fishing.
Tried something new today. Cast netted some mullet and used it as cut bait bc I was sore from working out lol.
No bump board, the two mallee ones around 24 and the bigger one around 30 is my guess after measuring the kayak when I got home.
Check out the Bass Pro line of reels. They have models all up and down the price range. I have two that I have had for a long time as my lightweight reels. The new ones always feel good to me in the stores.
Went to Deep Creek this morning. Had the river to myself and got several browns and some pretty little rainbows.
It was fucking awesome! Caught 5 or 6 trout. Lost a couple BIG ones. It was definitely an awesome and worthwhile experience. I learned a ton about reading the water and picking good spots to fish in. Had an awesome 15 minute fight with the fish in the first pic. Can’t wait to get back out there and use the stuff I learned on my own.
So I'm going fly fishing for the 1st time this weekend in North Georgia on the Taccoa. Bought a random fly rod on amazon, going to a fly shop Friday to get the right current flies. I've always been interested in fly fishing. Grew up doing a ton of saltwater fishing and fresh water lakes just never interested me at all.
Practice casting before you go! Best if you learn from someone with experience. I tried to learn casting from watching youtube videos and had a hard time picking it up. 5 minutes with a buddy who had fly fished before and I was fine. I would also really recommend a guide if you're serious. I learned so much on my trip I'm positive I'll be 1000X more successful now.
Yeah we'll see how a time or two goes solo. I've watched some videos on youtube. I'm going to try a few casts in the yard
Took last week off. Fished everyday except Monday and Saturday. Fished the beach T,W,R with nothing to show. Fished with my kid Friday he wanted to catch a fish on a lure. This was his big fish of the day on artificial Netted some bait and then got this big girl. This is about as big as they get around here
I started after the bridge where the tubers have to stop and fished my way up to the last bridge, so about 2 miles I guess? I had to quit at noon to get home since it's nearly a 2 hour drive. I'd like to go back and probably start at the last bridge and go up a few miles.
The DNR is having a youth fishing day this weekend where they stock areas and only let kids fish it. Taking my 8 and 3 year old up, should be a good time.
use prescription sunglasses from zenni and they're great, lasted a few years and starting to take on scratches
this is from one week after install. AVL Greenworks has one on Mud Creek and the amount it picks up is absurd. here a video of the mud creek trash trout in Hendersonville
I’ve helped with installs of those in several GA streams. They’re awesome and fairly easy to get through grant money. Just have to have some dedicated volunteers/students/employees to clean them out.
i saw those posts. i think its been repaired now. ive been on some lakes when trash slicks rolled in from creeks. was unreal seeing what comes flowing in.
