I exclusively use braided line with a fluoro leader pretty much. All in-shore. Can use a swivel (my dad always did) but I just tie line to line (double uni knot).
I use braid and use a double uni knot to connect to fluoro leader. Works like a charm. I don’t like using swivels because a double uni is easy to tie and prefer to use as little tackle as possible.
Double uni is what I use for braid to fluro. Double the braid before tying If im being proactive the night before I'll tie FG knot, but it's too much for on the water. Double uni is quick and super strong
I love and hate the fg knot. But tbh it’s actually easier to tie for me than the uni to uni in the wind on a kayak. If my leader snaps sometimes I get lazy and fish with straight braid if it’s close to the end of the day or the bite is hot
Favorite braid? I’ve got super slick V2 moonshine on one reel now and it’s nice but expensive as hell
Braid + fluoro leader 100% freshwater fishing here, as well. It's the best imo. I like Powerpro braid
I have power pro braid on one of my light rods right now. I guess braid is supposed to be more sensitive than mono and more durable.
If you want to get technical, it depends on what you’re fishing for. For example, you don’t need a long leader for topwaters and you may want a short one on some twitch baits as your hooks will hang up on the line if the leader is too long. I also tie mono to braid for topwaters and also on jerkbaits if I want to change the ascent rate. On average, cut 3’ that way you won’t have to re-tie a leader as often. ETA: I had a goddamn shark eat my trout and take my $25 jerk bait this morning. Still pissed about it.
Yah I suppose it depends on how deep the water is where you're fishing and where the fish are in the water column. They were on the bottom of 15 feet of water last weekend. I guess you just want a long enough leader of fluro so they can't see the main line.
I don’t use leader on topwater and haven’t noticed any issues. I just tie the lure straight to the braid.
Just booked our AirBnB for Blue Ridge, GA in March and booked a guided fly fishing trip with On The Fly Excursions that Doug will be joining me on. Doing a half day private wade trip and our AirBnB has a private lake so we can kill time fishing it, too. Planning on buying my own setup in a month or so and booking a bass fishing trip with a childhood friend of mine who’s now a fly fishing charter captain. Going with a 5 wt. High Cotton billdozer Skiddly
Sounds awesome! Ask the guide a ton of questions. I learned so much on my guided trip. It’s a really good opportunity to learn as much as you can and apply it to your own fishing.
Yep that’s the plan. Guided trip is the first morning we’re there so we can fish the rest of the trip on our own and use whatever knowledge was passed along. I was already told to work on roll casting if I’m going to try to learn ahead of time.
Sounds like a good time. The only comment would be on the size rod for bass, depending on what size flies you are planning on using, it may be tough getting them out there with a 5 weight. And horsing bigger bass around.
Yeah I’m going to have my gear and my friend will have whatever he uses for his usual charters. Big thing for me is learning how to cast it and get the feel and if it turns out to be too light, I’ll bump up to whatever he brings. I plan on buying cheaper waders, too, just because I won’t use them more than a couple times a year.
. They were all over Gulfport Harbor this morning too in case you need a place to fish this weekend. I like to think that most people pay that for live bait every time they fish. It served me well for 3 or so years.
Buy the lower end Orvis, Simms, or Redington waders. They're worth it. My Orvis waders have lasted 6 years and I'm about to upgrade tomorrow. Most equipment makers are raising prices 10/1 related to supply chain issues. Orders are showing up at fly shops nationwide half filled. No idea what is coming in or how many.
We sort and enumerate them, then take that data and incorporate it into an index of biotic integrity which is a series of 13 metrics used to grade overall stream health in relation to fish community structure.
Owsley one of the last days i got to fish the lower chattooga i was flipping some rocks and spooked a really big madtom. i wish i could have snapped a pic but it was gone fast. i haven't heard of other species of cats in this region, so maybe it was something else. it was around 6" long and i've only seen tiny ones a couple of inches.
There are also a few species or bullhead (snail being the most common) but it was likely a madtom. Probably a margined or speckled.
Here’s a snail bullhead I literally just collected. Notice how flat and skinny the entire body is. They’re designed for rock living in creeks.
Gonna be honest with y’all. I don’t particularly like the direction this is going. Catfish eat cut bait I get excited then sad
Picked up the Simms Freestone in Dark Gunmetal. Can also use for duck hunting. $300 but used Christmas and BD gift certificates to make it palatable.
Trout season is here so time to wader up. Gonna hit North Ga this weekend or next, then fishing the Eagle River in Colorado in 3 weeks.
slime/spine and because sail cats feed throughout the entire water column so they are practically impossible to avoid.
They opened up snapper fishing in MS this weekend but the offshore forecast is calling for 3-5 footers Inshore it's 1-2 feet, so I loaded up on Matrix Shad and bought a stradic to get after the trout and reds
I have the old wood handled stradic, FG, fh, fi and one fj Most of those have been retired What's an xg?
