Any team that loses more than 3 games in a season has an OC that is loathed by its fans.
Tony, please enlighten us on your superior wisdom
I don't remember anyone hating Al Borges
Sorry to hear about your dementia.
Unlike my Gator brethren, I prefer Chip to Frost
I think he was just in a bad position
That escalated quickly...
I'm just a big Frost fan since he ended the Jameis era like this and made our favorite Nole reporter sad
Frost did that huh?
Hey guys have you seen frost win 13 games at ucf? Definitely better than Chip Kelly
I don't think the fanbase in general prefers frost to chip. I 100% prefer Chip.
is this relevant somehow to the conversation?
This is also The Mainboard where coaches are incapable of learning and improving in the eyes of whatever fan base they disappointed.
If we are picking between the two straight up? Yeah Chip is the man.
we lost 2 games in each '13 & '14 and people didnt like Frost
Was just trying to impress the Oregon State fans on TMB
Both of them rest their nuts on your chin constantly
Yeah, I know. I just wanted to make a general comment about fans’ opinions of OCs.
Think the main concerns with Chip are primarily due to comments from our Duck brethren in that he won't put the effort needed into recruiting, won't do well with the booster/media stuff, and that he'll dip for the NFL if given another chance (he won't be).
But if that's all overstated nonsense, then I'm ready to push all my Chips in for Kelly.
But I’m pretty excited for Frost - but I’d be excited for any of these head coach names being thrown around, even Mullen.
I think the recruiting stuff is overblown. He had tons, for Oregon, of nfl players here. He was bringing in top 25 classes in a state with no home base. He also developed talent like crazy when here. He was also great at finding underrated talent.
Buddy sent me a YouTube yesterday of Frost’s comments on NSD. He hates it. He hates the idea of making it a celebration or providing any kind of fan fare about it.
That’s not going to go over well with our recruiting crazed fan base.
I’m not worried about Chip’s recruiting at all, more him leaving in 2-3 years. If he sincerely wants to get back in the college game, we’d be fools not to make him our #1 target.
A coach leaving in 2-3 years would suck ass
Frost didn't recruit, either. He would literally have his grad assistants grab his dry cleaning and his golf clubs for him instead of fill up a call sheet/watch tape for recruits. There was a culture that existed for decades (...one of the downsides of hiring in-house) that you couldn't recruit at Oregon and Frost was definitely apart of that.
And he (Frost) can be just as gruff and rude with the media and, presumably boosters, as Chip.
Everything you said about Chip is true. He doesn't give a shit about boosters. He probably wants to be in the NFL (so much so that I doubt he'd accept the Florida job, tbh). He's not a Dabo or Urban recruiting. But he's a far better coach than Frost. He's a far better coach than just about anyone; when he left Oregon, he was probably a top 3 coach in CFB. And if he leaves in a few years but gets you an SEC title and back in the CFB playoffs, is it really that bad?
No personal attacks
This is from an outsider perspective but my non trolling thoughts on chip
-every coaching search where his name was mentioned the Oregon fanbase talked up how much he hated to recruit. As has already been stated that isn’t going to mesh well in the SEC especially when he’ll be going up against guys like Saban, Jimbo, Kirby or even Coach O who are known as relentless recruiters. We just got rid of a guy who didn’t care much about recruiting and you can see how popular he was
-how much juice does he have left or is willing to give? Granted the NFL is an entirely different animal but he seemed to be burned out in the end and his offense hardly was effective as it was when he first showed up
-the personality factor. Again we just got rid of a guy who was a smartass, condescending prick to his superiors and the media/boosters and they probably won’t stop dancing on his grave for awhile because they hated him so much. I’m getting the impression chip has a lot of that personality himself
Where would he leave Florida to go? That's a destination job unless you're going to the NFL where he's not going to be in demand maybe ever again.
Or if he did get another NFL gig, they’re sure as hell not giving him control over personnel (well, the Browns might be dumb enough to do that), and I don’t think he’d go back to the NFL where he’d have to work with a GM
It's not ideal, but it's a step in the right direction we'd gladly take.
I think everyone is hoping whoever we hire is good enough to get us back to that level, but also be willing to stick around for a decade+.
Basically we want the college football version of Billy Donovan.
I don't see him getting another offer. I know NFL owners are sometimes woefully stupid about giving bad coaches too many chances but Kelly flamed out pretty bad at two different gigs. It's not like Pete Carroll though I guess owners are dumb enough to think he could be.
Yeah I think as a whole we don't want another short term hire
3 coaches this decade with 3 years to go
without the burnout
You're acting like he's about to die. He's 53 and a proven winner
I would totally take Chip over Frost. That isn’t a discussion.
That’s true but he still appeared to be burned out at the end of his NFL tenure
Hopefully this year off gave him the time to recharge
I get that but my opinion was formed by my brother playing for Scott Frost
To be fair, not liking recruiting is not the same as not being a good recruiter.
Dude is fucking nails as a coach. Surround him with assistants who are stud recruiters and he'd dominate.
Damn sounds like he and Rex Grossman would have had a blast together
Despite him saying that his main goal was to coach at Nebraska while he was at Oregon?
Ha, that was actually Frost’s mantra. It was just too difficult!
Taggart has a top 5 class, so maybe seeing is believing...
Oregon fans hated Frost so much that any time the offense was struggling it was because Frost was calling plays. But whenever the offense was doing well it was because Helfrich took over playcalling duties at that time.
this smells like bullshit because it's the first time i've ever heard it
Okay, well that class will probably end up outside the top 10 given all the players uncommitted so it won't be that different
I said this when Frost was at Oregon, but if he was 5’9” 300 pounds, and not some blonde guy they remember watching play in the 90’s would the media be fawning over him?
Chip had them 10-15, he leaves, they end up in the 20’s. Weird.
