I hate a good amount of our fanbase
Cringed because it reminded me of the entire Tennessee fanbase during the Kiffen era.
we also have a guy who knows someone at the eugene airport that said chip was secretly flying into eugene late in the night during the coaching search
Fuente, Taggart, and Campbell so clearly focused on possibly being considered for the job. Pretty sure I heard Chip stutter while discussing UF today, too.
Good to see that Frost was able to pull through for his team in the end. It’s pretty clear why he’s the lead candidate.
i can't comment on that conversation chain but i'm not sure how much credit frost should get for herbert's recruitment considering that herbert was going to commit to oregon regardless. i'm not sure if any of the coaches even went to see herbert play, despite the fact that he's from eugene. iirc the first time helfrich saw him in person was when he went to one of herbert's high school basketball games.
this isn't some insider stuff either. i heard it from oregon's radio guy.
You can have high level recruiting with a poor recruiting hc if the hc values recruiting and understands how to staff and organize recruiting. The concern I would have with Kelly is he seems to be very loyal to his staff, would he bring in some outsiders with some heavy ties to Florida. The laid back recruiting approach that exists in the pac 12 isn’t going to work in the sec.
Ducks fans told us he was forced to keep the old staff there that had been there since apparently 1940
Would hope he’s smart enough to understand the SEC is a whole different ball game and he’d need to bring in some great recruiter$ but who knows
Gary Campbell - RB - 24 years
Steve Greatwood - OL - 32 years
Tom Osborne - TE/ST - 16 years
Nick Aliotti - DC - 24 years
Don Pellum - LB - 28 years
John Neal - DB - 14 years
Our coaching staff had been at Oregon for a really long fucking time. Old, lazy, and complacent may be an understatement.
Chip got to bring in three coaches, Helfrich, Frost and Jerry Azzinaro.
Did they have dirt on Belloti or something?
Google Oregon PERS.
I'll Bing it thank you very much!
Florida can get the recruits UNC could never get. Fedora is your man.
When Chip became HC he let Pflugrad and Gray go. He brought in Frost for Pflugrad and Azz for Gray. Then he hired Helfrich from Colorado to take his vacated OC spot.
None of the criticism of Chip as a recruiter should lead one to conclude that recruiting is "laid back" in the West, cmon now
I thought Helfrich had been a long time Oregon assistant for some reason.
Here is what I never understood, why didn't Oregon conduct a coaching search when Kelly left for the NFL?
I'd say there was still a fair amount of belief in that staff as a whole. I mean they had been a part of all of the recent success at that point. And Helfrich was endorsed by Kelly, so... That and the obvious money savings of course.
A national search would lead only to a coach that would want to bring in his own guys. Oregon was overly loyal to the assistants and didn’t want to lose the culture they had helped craft. Kelly recommended Helfrich to take over and Helfrich was okay with keeping the staff as is.
It’s definitely much less intense than it is in the southeast. Among a lot of coaches recruiting out West is perceived as more laid back than other parts of the country. There simply isn’t the craziness for high school or college football and usc is the only blue blood program.
theres only one thing Pflugrad was good for
His name got thrown around a bit during our last two hiring processes. Can't say for sure if he would have been better or worse.
His wife was dirty
but seriously Amanda Pflugrad is probably the best thing that Oregon has ever produced
Phil Knight, maybe? Also, known cross country running enthusiast, user 941Gator, will literally fight you for not mentioning Steve Prefontaine.
i'm impressed at the SEC SEC SECing in these posts
