FV Preseason top 25 in the state:

    1. Miami Central

Every fan thought a year ago that after the departure of QB Jeffrey Godfrey, RB Brandon Gainer, and WR Josh Reese that there would be a drop off for the Rocket program. Hardly, if anything, the Rockets are even more talented than a year ago. They have one of the most impressive defensive fronts in the state led by Miles Pace, and Dwight Jackson. The defense will also showcase big talents such as LB Oliver Vigille (Syracuse commit) and DB Thomas Finnie (South Carolina commit).

On the offensive side of the ball the Rockets will have plenty of fire power at their disposal which includes standout RB Devonta Freeman (Florida State commit), and a tremendous one two punch in WR Charles Gaines and Tommy Shuler. The Rockets also provide plenty of depth on the offensive line in Marquis Lucas and John Miller (Louisville commit). Powering this talented offense is former Miami Springs QB Rakeem Cato, who threw for over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns a year ago. In total the Rockets have close to 12 Division I prospects and on paper the top team in the state. So far, Central hasn't been able to take that step, but will this be the year?

    2. Dwyer

The defending 4A State champions are back. The Panthers have plenty of excitement in 2010, with the return of DE Curt Maggitt, QB Jacoby Brissett, and TE Nick O'Leary. The Panthers will need to replace Matt Elam at running back. However, the defense will be just as lethal yet again with the return of one of the most feared pass rushers in the state in Maggitt, along with Mike Minns at defensive tackle, Keith Bowers DT. The Panthers also have two talented defensive backs returning this year in Shawn McClain and Darrell Hunter.

    3. Plant

When you have won the last three out of four state championships, the target gets a little larger on your back. This year, the Panthers look for a third straight title behind the arm of Alabama commitment Phillip Ely and RB James Wilder Jr. who committed to Florida State earlier this week. The biggest question for the Panthers will be filling the holes departed by LB Mike Mirabella, DB Javonte Martin, and WR Allen Sampson. The Panthers might get upset early, but this is a team that will certainly battle for the top sport near the end of the year as they mature with experience at linebacker, receiver, and the secondary.

    4. Pensacola

The Tigers probably have the least amount of respect on a national scene as any team in the state, despite showcasing arguably the most talented defense in the state a year ago that posted five consecutive shutouts in the playoffs. Most of that defense returns again as the Tigers return 7 starters, including standout defenders Cordivido Grice who last year racked well over 100 tackles for the Tigers in their state title run. Top safety prospect Joseph Hunter also returns. The offense should be a little more dynamic with the return of RB Quan Johnson and QB Jalan Spencer.

    5. Armwood

You could certainly boast the argument that the Hawks are a year away with one of the most impressive young secondary's in the state headlined by junior Quinton Brown, and Eric Striker. The Hawks also return all their linebackers with Jermaine McKinley being the biggest returning star after leading the team in tackles and sacks in 2009. In the trenches, DT David Tinsley should be a name to keep an eye out for the Hawks defense. Offensively, the Hawks are loaded with one of the top junior prospects in the state in RB Matt Jones. QB Josh Grady should also be a huge threat both on the ground and through the air. WR A.J. King will be a strong candidate for a big breakout season.

    6. Jefferson

This could be the year of the Dragon with Jefferson returning one of the most balanced teams in Hillsborough County. Tampa Jefferson will return the county's leading passer, Quinton Williams who lead the county in passing with over 3,100 yards. Two of his top targets will return as well in Chris Moore and Andre Davis. In addition, linebacker Ramik Wilson will help bring even more diversity to that offense at tight end. Joining Wilson will be top junior DE Tyriq McCord, Rodney Mills, and Brandon Simmons.

    7. Dr. Phillips

Although they are in a loaded classification with the likes of Miami Central, Northwestern, Deland, and Mainland, the Panthers will certainly be one of the top favorites to possibly end up playing for the 6A title in December. Dr. DP returns QB Nick Patti, a very talented junior who settled in nicely halfway through the year. The Panthers also have one of the most electrifying athletes in the state coming back in RB Demetrius Hart. Also, expect a pretty significant role for WR Chris Gallon. The defensive side of the ball is even scarier for the opposition facing the Panthers when you consider returning for Dr. Phillips are nine starters. Five-star DB Hasean Clinton-Dix, LB LaQuentin Smith, and LB Roderick Ryles also return for already a stellar defense.

    8. STA

Revenge is certainly on the mind of STA after their stunning loss to Manatee last season in the 5A playoffs. The Raiders will have all the pieces to make another strong run if they can replace the departure of two of their talented backs in James White and Giovanni Bernard. However, the Raiders will return Iowa commitment Jake Rudock, and two of premier receivers in the state in Rashard Greene and Phillip Dorsett. The Raiders also once again should have a stellar offensive line led by Bobby Hart. Defensively, the Raiders should be stellar yet again with four-star DB Marcus Roberson, Khambrel Garland, and Linebacker Ken Hankerson.

    9. MNW

The Bulls are back to claim county supremacy this year as QB Teddy Bridgewater returns, along with his top target Eli Rogers. However, the biggest question mark for the Bulls may be, who takes over for graduated and current Louisville Cardinal Corvin Lamb. Enter RB Israel Linder, who is more shifty than Lamb but will he be able to carry the load? Defensively, the Bulls have a stout group of linebackers returning in Lyndon Edwards and Demetrius Allen. The Bulls return five starters on defense and six on the offensive side of the ball and should once again be a heavy factor for the 6A crown.

    10. Glades Central

The Raiders show no signs of slowing down under second year head coach Jesse Hester. Glades Central will put most of their emphasis on their talented wide receiver group of Jamie Wilson and all everything Kelvin Benjamin. Wilson feels the void left with the departure and graduation of Greg Dent. Davonte Allen should also provide plenty of depth for the Raiders. LB Jamarious Rowley will take over at quarterback. The Raiders defense, which is annually one of the most furious in the state will once again be stellar with the return of LB/DE Robert Way, who last season racked up 24 sacks. Dominque Gibson will join Way on the defensive side of the ball, along with Albert Likely.

    11. Manatee

The Hurricanes might have lost two game breakers in QB Brion Carnes and WR Ace Sanders, but those departures don't appear to be shielding the excitement coming out of Bradenton after a strong spring. The Hurricanes will certainly have the services of RB Mike Blakely, and a very talented defense that returns five starters from the 2009 squad that finished as the state's runner up in the 5A Finals. QB Cord Sandberg takes over at the quarterback position. Sandberg threw for five touchdowns in the spring game for Manatee. His top target this year should be WR Quinton Bundrage, who has emerged as a top weapon in the Hurricanes offense. Manatee will rely on a very impressive defensive front led by Quinton Pompey and Drakkar Wilson to make a strong impact again in 2010.

    12. Cocoa

The Tigers are the defending 2A state champions after a very impressive win over Glades Central in 2009. Clearly the offensive side of the ball will be the focus for Cocoa with the return of electrifying tailback Chevelle Buie. The Tigers will also get a big boost in the backfield with the return of running backs Devonte Jones and Tyrelle Colston. The Tigers will use Rick Rivers on offense more this season. Defensively, Cocoa should stout again with the return of seven starters including linebackers Grady Redding, and Tyrell Denson. Demario Gilmore should round out the impressive linebacker core for the Tigers. Rick Rivers and Datorius Allen should help as well.

    13. Lakeland

The Dreadnaughts have one of the most lethal weapons at wide receiver in Javares McRoy, but where the Naughts go this year will depend on the emergence of a very talented group of young offensive lineman led by juniors Evan and Devin Goodman. Both prospects are 6-foot-3, 260 and 6-foot-4, 270 pounds respectively. Tim Evans takes over the quarterback position for the graduated Scooter Haggins. The Dreadnaughts will lean more on their offense early in the season, with young talented prospects like Kareem Givens and Teddy Wright. Make no mistake the Dreadnaughts will be one of the top teams out of Polk County near the end of the year.

    14. Kathleen

The bitterness of having their season cut short because of an ineligible player still stings for the Red Devils and they look to make up for lost time with 14 starters returning this year. The offensive side of the ball starts with two of the premier receivers in the Polk County area in Aaron Baysdon and Jacques Mackeroy. Many forget this team is coming off in reality a 9-1 regular season record and expect an even more talented defensive squad this year with the return of linebacker Gionni Paul, Victor Troutman, and Otis Buford. DB Sam Rancy, and Terrick Colston also return for a Red Devils squad that could very well end up being the top team out of Polk County by seasons end.

    15. BTW

Last season, the Tornadoes finished with a 10-2 record behind a strong defense led by top junior DT Elkino Watson. Expect much of the same much of the same this year with the emergence of LB Jonas Clark, DB Denard Turner, and LB Tellas Jones. The Tornadoes return 12 starters in total, six on defense and six on offense. QB Jeremiah Hay returns yet again. Joining him on the offensive side of the ball will be big weapons in Derrick Moise and Tony Gallon. The Tornadoes will have plenty of speed on either side of the ball but the key comes down to their offensive line where Washington will need time to develop.

    16. Deland

It's business as usual for the Bulldogs, as they once again have high hopes for 2010 with the return of all-everything athlete DeA'nte 'Pop' Saunders, who last year rushed for over 1,500 yards. He will be joined with plenty of weapons including former Seminole QB Brain Kush and speedy back Jo Jo Kemp. TE Aaron Commeens and OL Trey Pettis help anchor a stellar offensive line. Defensively, the Bulldogs will have to replace Mark Joyce, but enter young standouts Angel Campos, Maroa White, and Damian Davis. Tevin Gordon will be one to watch for 2010 on the defensive side of the ball as well.

    17. Lincoln

Last year, the Trojans were one win away from the reaching the 4A State Finals. This season, Lincoln returns one of the most loaded squads around the Big Bend. RB Javarius "Buck" Allen returns from a tough leg injury that cut his season short. Allen is now back and 100% and without question one of the top athletes in the state of Florida. Lincoln also has a very talented but young quarterback taking over the helm in Ronald Butler. Also, keep your eye out for Keondrick Daniels, who is dynamic anytime his hands touch the football. Defensively, the Trojans are loaded with eight starters returning which include South Florida commitment Chris Garye. Lincoln also should have a huge weapon returning on special teams with kicker Carlos Gaston back.

    18. Chaminade

Shock is probably the best word to describe how the Lions ended their season in 2009. However, the Lions have one of the most talented junior classes returning powered by Orlando David and WR Fred McRae, not to mention the emergence of top quarterback Jarred Randall and explosive wide receiver Curt Evans. The Lions return 13 starters from a team that most consider the best team in the 2B classification. The ingredients for a title are all in place, especially on the defensive side of the ball led by Jonathan Aiken and Max Raymond.

    19. Apopka

The Blue Darters have been one of the most consistent teams in the 6A classification and we certainly don't see that trend changing in 2010. RB Tom Smith returns, coming off a strong 1,000 yard season. Also returning in the backfield is FB Keon Brooks, as well as wingback Quay Barnes. With top junior OL Ty Darlington returning, the rushing game should be outstanding once again. Defensively, Apopka will have several holes to fill, but the secondary should once again be a strength with the return of defensive backs Keenan Williams and Spencer Waseem.

    20. Mainland

It hasn't been a great off-season for the Buccaneers with the departure of OL Garrett Clark and with the uncertainty of RB Marlin Lane heading into the 2010 season. However, there is still plenty to be excited about, especially when you return six starters on the offensive side the ball, that includes QB Austin Parker who has started to settle in with the Buccaneer offense. Cortez Davis should help pick up the slack left behind by Lane until he returns. Davis also powers a strong defense that returns five starters including Jarvis Mott and Kelvin Lee.

    21. North Marion

The Colts have rode the success of their talented 2011 class just for this very moment heading into this season. TE Sean Price, WR Latroy Pittman, and RB Jamie Gilmore could arguably be the best in Northern Florida. Pittman, a top wide receiver prospect on a national level may be the best of the bunch and just recently committed to the Florida Gators earlier this week. Sophomore QB Reggie Wilkerson could be a breakout candidate this year. The key for the Colts may come in the trenches where they are hoping DT Rakeem Bess leads the charge.

    22. Miramar

The Patriots did the unthinkable last year, shocking everyone by capturing the 6A State Title. Obviously the losses of quarterback Ryan Williams and Ivan McCartney are substantial, but the Patriots hope their stingy defense can carry the load early as the offense matures. DB Steven Montgomery will provide the leadership and Tracey Howard should also help out the secondary at both cornerback and safety. As far as the offense goes, Miramar has high hopes in new wide receivers Malcolm Lewis, and Devonte Mathis to help ease the burden early into the season.

    23. Robinson

What a turnaround at Robinson by head coach Mike DePue. But now the Knights are ready to take that next step. The offensive side of the ball looks very strong with QB Blake Rice returning and a load of talented wide receivers that include Ruben Gonzalez and Frankie Williams. Helping out the offense will be the underrated skills of JJ Hubbard a very elusive back for the Knights. The Knights are also expecting a stronger performance on the defensive side of the ball with six starters returning led by LB Tevin Newman and Andrew Meddaugh.

    24. Bolles

Most of the time when you lose your entire backfield that includes running backs, and even your starting quarterback, that would be a challenge for any program. But Bolles seem to be a team that reloads each season. While the Bulldogs do have inexperience in the backfield, they do return a very strong offensive line led by John and Nathan Theus. Nathan has already committed to Georgia. The Bulldogs should have some emerging standouts in D.J. Stewart at running back, but also keep an eye on Milton Revell. On the defensive side of the ball, Taylor Betros returns at safety, along with Michael Spence.

    25. St Augustine

While you never can put the Yellow Jackets as an under the radar team, expect another big year for head coach Joey Wiles despite not having that star power most are used to. At quarterback, Kyle West is back and so is top wide receiver target Markis Merrill and Wallace Archie. Jerry Blount takes over at running back and the Yellow Jackets will also have one of the bigger weapons in the state in kicker Mark Sturgis who is the younger brother of Caleb Sturgis who is currently at Florida.

I think people are really overrating plant. Supposedly they only return 3 starters(wilder, posada, ely) and although those are 3 very talented players that is going to be a lot of inexperienced players starting for them. Knowing plant they brought in a good amount of talented kids from other schools and they likely will be in the hunt for states but for rivals to have them ranked as the preseason #1 overall ranked team IN THE NATON makes them very overrated IMO

if the FHSAA dropped the hammer on sofla recruiting like this, so many coaches would be fucked

Gulf football coach Jay Fulmer resigned Monday, the result of a Pasco County investigation for recruiting two athletes to its program, principal Steve Knobl told the St. Petersburg Times.

Knobl and Gulf administrators met with the football team to share the news Monday before practice. Knobl said no decision has been made regarding a replacement.

"We have a classic Friday against Tarpon (Springs)," Knobl said. "...We're trying to keep the task at hand and minimize this as much as we can. It's not going to be an easy situation."

Knobl said a member of Superintendent Heather Fiorentino's staff, and possibly the superintendent herself, will meet with Fulmer at a morning meeting Tuesday. Knobl said the meeting is not unique, and is afforded to employees in similar situations.

Pasco County athletic director Phil Bell said he expects the investigation to wrap up in the next day or so when Knobl sends a self-report to the Florida High School Athletic Association. At that time, the FHSAA would look at the report and determine if violations occurred and what - if any - punishment is warranted.

"I met with school administration last Wednesday," Bell said. "I met with them and spoke with student athletes and coaches to make sure we're following FHSAA guidelines. I have a concern we may have some student athleteswhose eligibility is in question."

Bell would not name the students other than to say, "It's been publicized of who the kids are."

Ty'Shon Peters and Kris Aratchiysky both transferred from Anclote to Gulf three weeks ago.

Peters played at Gulf last season before transferring to Anclote during the offseason. He was expected to battle for the Sharks' starting quarterback position, but fell behind after an injury kept him sidelined most of the spring. At Gulf, Peters would have to compete with Will Fulmer, Fulmer's son, to play quarterback.

Aratchiysky was Anclote's top running back last season, and expected to carry an even greater load in 2010. Anclote coach Matt Wicks was caught off guard by the transfers, but told the Times after his transfer, "I think if a kid doesn’t want to be at my school then don’t be at my school."

Bell said it's a concern that violations were committed, and that the eligibility of the two players is in question.

"I have a serious concern for their eligibility," Bell said.

The development is similar to the one Zephyrhills faced last year when Jerrell Cogmon was fired two days into preseason practice after he was charged with illegal recruiting. Cogmon's dismissal led to one of Zephyrhills' worst seasons. The Bulldogs used co-interim head coaches, Greg Mathis and Troy Hochstetler, as a Band-aid until Reggie Roberts was hired to bring stability to the progam.

Fulmer was enetering his fifth season after compiling a mark of 31-22. He led the Buccaneers to the program's first playoff berth and guided them to a Class 3A state semifinal in 2008 with a program-best 10-2 finish.

At least 10 varsity players skipped out on practice after the news of Fulmer's resignation, including Will Fulmer.
