The Phillip Ely connection! Dbl’s favorite former Bam.
He’s tired of the FHSAA bullshit apparently
Weird move but I guess if he wanted to move up somewhere like that was the best he could do. Would've been interesting to see what happened if he'd stayed with Taggart at USF.
Plant certainly has the infrastructure to continue as an elite program, maybe the next coach will allow players to go to UF.
I’ll never forget the 02 title game Bolles vs Chaminade Madonna. That Chaminade team had Jon Beason and about 10 other kids who went D1 and their defense was nasty. Just ran through everybody on their schedule
they play Bolles in the title game and I knew nothing about Bolles. They come out of the tunnel and looked like a bunch of tiny surfer dudes.
A bunch of badass sofla kids vs these Jacksonville surfer dudes. I thought it was going to be a bloodbath.
shit was a gridlock the entire game and Bolles ended up winning like 6-0.
First time I had ever heard of Corky Rogers
Thanks I’m glad u could add to the corky tribute
That guy had some great sideline attire with those polo sweaters.
Looked like a senator or something.
Was at that game. Remember beason absolutely leveling the QB on the sideline because he didn't get out of bounds quick enough.
We turned the ball over so much. 3 turnovers was uncharacteristic and I remember we couldnt convert a 4th down for our life.
Wake me up when Joe Kinnan dies.
He isn’t the GOAT
nobody will care
I attended a Tommy Bartlett basketball camp one summer at Bolles School. Was awesome. Before then I didn’t know there were schools like that.
Lol at 2A football.
George Smith passed away?
smith is #2
Smith had so many amazing players over the years and a lot that went on to play in the NFL
How many can u name that corky had?
I'm all in on him being remembered as a really good/great coach, but let's pump the brakes on calling him the goat. It's not like he was just trotting out bums on the field. He always had an unfair advantage over everyone in their classification and area. He was at a school that could recruit as much as they wanted, without fear of punishment. 90's and 00's bolles could basically do no wrong in the eyes of the FHSAA.
All that being said...I do think he was a hell of a football mind, and used to go with my dad to watch their practices/talk to him. A lot of the football knowledge I have is probably in part influenced by him. My dad never coached with him, but coached for 20-25 years with one of his closest coaching buddies. I just understand that there's a huge asterisk that goes along with his success.
You just described Smith as well
guess that doesn't change the rankings between them, both incredible football coaches though and with that comes talented players who want to play for them
That's fair on it describing both of them. I just feel like there's plenty of coaches out there that could/would have had the same success at Bolles.
Having success at Bolles I can agree with, having the same success idk if I can jump on board with that. But I will admit I'm not fully educated on Bolles and duval HS football.
Could make the same argument against Smith though. Since he left 2 different coaches have won 4 titles at STA
Yeah that might be a little bit of an exaggeration by me, but there are great coaches throughout the years that would have had similar success I think.
He did it at Lee before Bolles- I’ll give him the GOAT for the area. It’s about all you can compare it too
The program is also run a lot differently than it was under George Smith.
Ex. He didn't allow Senior transfers until the last few years of his tenure.
While he did win at lee, it wasn't close to the level of what he accomplished at Bolles. He had less losses in More years at Bolles, and never won a championship at Lee. I definitely think you could give him Goat for the area. Only other one I can think of in the conversation would be Pruitt (not sure if I'm missing one or two more that could be included). He had 4 championships at University Christian (same type of deal as Corky at bolles) and 3 at Union County in the span of a decade.
Meh. He won ten conference titles at Lee.
Bolles had a stretch when they recruited a ton of players. That disappeared in the early 2000s and he still won. I think Bolles has 11 state championships with ten of those under Corky. He was a great freaking coach.
Pruitt wasn't in Corky's league.
Not gonna lie, I always laugh at small school ball because most of the powerhouses at that level get fat off shitty teams and stack their roster. But Bolles ran the Wing T to PERFECTION under Corky and would beat seven shades of shit out of 8A schools because it was unstoppable when run right.
The man was a phenomenal coach and a mentor to hundreds of kids and coaches. This is a big loss for high school football.
Can still recall how he would collect all the mail from colleges for his players and put them into shoeboxes and gave them to the players after the season was over. Back in the day no STA kids committed until after their HS seasons were over. And once an STA kid committed there was no decommitting. Towards the end things started to change with that and he started to lose that type of control with cell phones and social media becoming bigger. I'm not sure he would survive if he was coaching during the height of these social media recruiting sagas
Yup. And kids always qualified. Now it’s hit or miss. Better than 95% of schools but not a lock like it was before.
what STA kids didn’t even qualify?
They’ve had some issues lately. Huff for UM had to take a grey shirt.
I find 1 thing surprising
That Yusuf has a HC job
Did everybody snitch on each other? Seems like a nice example of mutually assured destruction
Not sure they violated intentionally but whatever
I mean, probably
The grind never stops
Until you’re fired for breaking local orders
Boy I can’t even imagine what type of threats she’s getting now for posting that and getting the staff fired
They should just hire Taurean away from the Chevy dealership to coach the team.
