So we have three goats now. I just sit there with a glass of wine and watch them eat. It is so relaxing.
Anyone ever grown eggplant before? My plant is quite unhappy and doesn't seem to be growing. The leaves are curling up and it's only had two flowers, dropping the first one.
if you have space in your home for a planter or two, you can trim them up a ton and wait out the winter google "overwintering peppers" if that applies to your situation
Already have 3-4 local farm stores and several restaurants interested in carrying our lamb, so it's starting out well so far.
It's still alive and now adding to its bloom. About 1 month ago: Today: I'm thinking about collecting the seeds, and growing tons of these fertile, year-round strain of bluebonnets and making some money selling the seeds. Spoiler not really though
I picked 9 lbs, 7 oz of green beans last night, bringing my year-to-date total to 24 lbs, 9 oz. If everything goes as planned, I'll easily hit my goal of 50 lbs.
I know you're in MN like me. What's your preferred variety (or varieties) of green beans? I normally just do the simple Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder. Trying some Carson bush beans for a fall planting this year.
I first tried Cantare beans a few years ago and they are now my go-to. I did a few rows of blue lake bush because I had some seeds left over from last year, but the bulk of my beans are Cantare. They're smaller than blue lake bush (max size is about 4" long and about as thick as a #2 pencil), but they just don't stop producing. I have 20' rows in my garden and I'm getting a good 2-3 lbs more per row out of the Cantare than I am the Blue Lake Bush. Last year, the same plants that first produced beans in June were still producing beans in early September.
Went to Home Depot today and was shocked to find they had Bonnie Bell Ghost Pepper plants. Back in business.
Extracted another 12-13 gallons of honey today. All darker honey. These three bears are from this year. The two on the right are from today.
My wife has been interning at a big farm nearby. They just gave us 2 ribeyes, 2 fillets, and a sirloin. They sell their ribeyes for $23/lb usually. They also have a young berkshire pig that has an infection, but they're one of those farms that is no antibiotics at all. If it's still doing poorly on Sunday my wife's going to see if they will let us take it so it doesn't die. Already been looking at pork meat charts in hopes we get it.
One of our pregnant ewes died today, from what we believe is polio of all things. Was due with triplets in October.
Does anyone know anything about oak tree diseases? One tree on our property is losing its leaves already, most of the ones left on the tree are almost translucent, there's a few that are still green. The north east side is almost entirely the clear leaves, the south side toward the bottom has the green ones.... doesn't look like lightning, really can't tell anything is wrong by looking at the truck or limbs.
Possibly burr oak blight Can't tell from the pic if that's a white oak or burr oak. Where do you live?
He hasn't responded to the text I sent. He may have changed numbers. Call your local Ag extension office tomorrow for a rec on a local arborist. From looking at the one pic, it's worth trying to save that tree
picked my first brandywine tomato this weekend and now I know why they'er so highly liked. Just amazing
Planted two new Hass Avacados a couple months back, have to wait 5 years till they produce something but they should grow well here.
Starting my first veg garden next weekend at our new house. Starting small with a 4X8 raised bed for a small winter garden.
We had our first frost about 2 weeks ago, so I pulled my tomatoes. I got a late start because all of my seedlings damped off. Around late August/early September, half of my tomatoes got hit by late blight. Then we got the early frost. I only got 54 lbs of tomatoes this year. Normally, I get 130-140 lbs.
Anyone make hot sauce? I’m fermenting some peppers in a mason jar with some garlic in a saltwater brine. Probably about ready to be done. Next step is to blend and bottle - can I just put it into a washed out old hot sauce bottle? Or does it need to be pressure canned?
I’ve done both. If you’re using vinegar it should be good for a few months in the fridge because of the acidity of the vinegar. Though I think the fermentation process would keep it safe as well. If it’s not very acidic and you’re making a lot, I would can.
I don’t have any vinegar in it now, could add some when I blend it. Not making a ton, just a quart jar. Planned on just starting to use it if I can dump it into a washed bottle and not have to worry about getting sick
One of the lambs was a runt (half the size of her brothers, only 3.5 lbs) that the cold was affecting, so my wife did this: The mother was walking on her and mostly ignoring her, so we had to bring her in and will bottle feed her for 3 weeks until we can wean her.
Also, we just closed on a new house that has an enclosed courtyard in the front right by the kitchen. Super excited to pull everything out of the beds and make it my kitchen garden.
