About 1/4 of the way through it and I have little doubt it is one of the best pieces of fiction ever. Not sure I have encountered something that could please so many different categories of people.

You will get roasted for this comment but I also enjoyed the movie contrary to what seems to be the prevailing opinion on this board.

Extremely good. I've read about 10 graphic novels and it was the best. Excellent artwork, cool narrative flow, Easter eggs in some of the frames, chapters in between that give extra detail with the fake case files and stuff, that pirate comic that makes a story within a story, etc.

So far I just think the book does a better job of weaving through the individual characters...I can appreciate the movie, but I don't think it is on the same level as the graphic novel.

Book is amazing. You need to watch the four hour cut of the movie with the Black Freighter spliced in.

Book was ok to me, movie less so. That said it was the first and only graphic novel I've read and it wasn't much what I expected.

Ok I think my tags make it seem like I hated the movie. I liked it. I didn't like it as one of my all time favorite movies though.

The book will easily be in my top 5.

I recommend watching the movie first then reading the book. For me, at least, the plot was a strange concept to grasp, and without having seen the movie I don't think I could have followed the book as well.

Re: Late to the party...but how damn good is watchmen (the book)??

That was my favorite Batman graphic novel and generally considered one of the GOATs of the genre

    http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Knight-Returns-Frank-Miller/dp/1563893428

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.

Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome.

    "graphic novel"

kind of a combination of the 2. The traditional sense of the word comic doesn't do it justice.

It's the only graphic novel I've read an it was great. I only watched part of the movie and it didn't seem to great. The movie seemed a little slow but I plan on re-watching it.

Kinda want to read some more graphic novels.

Yea, it is one of the reasons I really need to read it.

The more I read good graphic novels the less I separate them from the good fiction books. The literature term, "less is best" becomes even more instrumental in a graphic novel.

Been wanting to read that for a while but our college library only has a partial set so I didn't want to get halfway into it. Another one I really want to read is the graphic novel version of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." I bought a couple single issues and was waiting for the full volume to come out, but when it did it was missing stuff that was in the individual issues (each one contained a prose part at the end after the comic.) That pissed me off. Another thing I've seen that looks really cool is some graphic novel adaptations of some of Shakespeare's plays. "The Tempest" in particular looked badass.

One problem with reading "Watchmen" first is that it's hard for other ones to measure up to it. In particular it's crazy how detailed every panel in it is. Like in "V for Vendetta", each panel is sort of a sketch that is sort of colored in. "Watchmen" has these awesome ass drawings that sometimes take up a whole page and are always done in vivid color.

Speaking of sparse drawings, another one that looks really good is "From Hell." Anybody read that one? It's super long and was made into a movie; it's about Jack the Ripper

The movie was meh, but I was in high-school when I saw it so that could be young-naive thinking on my part. Will have to read graphic novel.
