I'm a DRF guy, I'll use Formulator unless I'm on track at Canterbury, where I'll just get the paper. That said, TimeformUS has a good product, too. Will look at their PPs occasionally.

Pace does worry me with Sharp Azteca a bit, but I don't think Seymourdini has that kind of speed. Comes down to how he can deal with Americanize. Honestly, the bigger worry for me is that the Breeders Cup was his main goal, and that goes for all the Breeders Cup horses in the race (so that is a concern with Practical Joke as well). The closer to the race we get, the more I'm interested in using Beasley at least a little bit.

this is just awful and heartbreaking at San Luis Rey:

25 horses dead, the rest have been taken elsewhere (Del Mar, private farms, etc.)

According to reports from the state's racing regulator and horsemen on the ground, some two dozen horses have died, at least one horseman was injured, and a number of barns have burned down after a brush fire consumed San Luis Rey Training Center Dec. 7 in Bonsall, Calif.

An advisory issued by the California Horse Racing Board late Thursday night said "it is believed that approximately 25 horses perished in the fire." Owner/trainer Joe Herrick has been hospitalized and is being treated for third-degree burns on his arm and shoulder, according to volunteer and former trainer Christina Gindt.

In the evacuation efforts at San Luis Rey. hundreds of horses were shipped to Del Mar, which issued a call for volunteers to care for the new arrivals.

According to horsemen on the ground, it's going to take time to account for all of the horses. Trainer Cliff Sise said horses at San Luis Rey were released from their stalls in order to avoid burning barns and were running free within the facility beginning Thursday afternoon.

"There are horses running all loose down here," Sise said. "People have lost horses. Barns have burned down. It just happened so fast that (we) had to do something."

Trainer Scott Hansen, who was saddling a horse for a race at Los Alamitos Race Course Thursday, said he knows some of his horses have died, but is still waiting for the final total. He estimates 8-10 have died.

"I wish we would have made that decision (to let horses out of their stalls) a little sooner, but to turn racehorses loose on a racetrack is not a safe thing," Hansen said. "It was a last resort. We heard vans were en route, but they didn't get there in time. It still hasn't sunk in."

Later in the day, Sise provided further detail of what occurred at Hansen's barn.

"I heard them screaming, so I was able to get the webbing off of some, but the fire was so bad, I couldn't get to them all," Sise said.

Billy Koch of Little Red Feather Racing said Oddsmaker, an unraced 2-year-old, died in the fire.

"We lost our best 2-year-old," Koch said of the Phil D'Amato-trained Morning Line colt. "I don't know what to do with myself. ... Total devastation."

Trainer Sam Scolamieri, who was on the ground at San Luis Rey, estimates half of the training center's barns have been burned down. Barns closer to the track and at a lower elevation were in the area where the fire was worst, while barns farther away from the track at a higher elevation were safer.

Doug O'Neill's assistant trainer, Leandro Mora, said the O’Neill San Luis Rey string was largely OK, but gave a chilling account of the devastation.

"We’re very blessed that the majority of our horses are fine," Mora said. "We had to let some horses loose and were very lucky to put 10 on two different vans right away. Four are at Del Mar, four are (at other facilities), and some are roaming around. ... I saw two horses burn to death, running around on fire. They were all just running around so wild. We saw one break down, probably his hip, from running around, and we found out later they put him down.

“I never thought in my life that I’d see something like that."

Trainer Dan Dunham also said, during efforts to round up loose horses, some were found dead on the racetrack. He felt they likely died from smoke inhalation. He said he was unsure of the status of several of his horses.

"We don't know. Nobody knows where a lot of them ended up," Dunham said. "It's going to be a while before everyone finds their horses. There were 20 vans in there with us and we were just grabbing horses and putting them in.

"A lot of guys really risked their lives to get in there and get the horses loose, because those barns were going up."

Trainer Richard Baltas said his barn is intact and all of his horses are in their stalls. Baltas, whose main string is at Santa Anita Park, is attempting to get to San Luis Rey, but hadn't been able to as of Thursday afternoon.

"I'm trying (to get there), but my barn is standing and isn't burned," Baltas said. "But my assistant Ruben is on the roof with a hose to make sure everything around the barn is wet."

Trainer Adam Kitchingman said Thursday night that his horses and barn were safe. He also owns a home nearby the training center, and while his family was able to evacuate, he is unsure of the status of his house and is trying to get into the area.

"I don’t even know if my house is still standing, to be honest," Kitchingman said. "I'm sitting here (on the road) and there are 50-100 trucks just waiting to get in. Everyone is trying to get in there to help, but they’re only letting so many in at a time."

Trainer Richard Mandella got late notice Thursday night that his string at San Luis Rey was en route to Del Mar.

"I have horses with Michele Dollase there. I got good news about 30 minutes ago that they’re on the way to Del Mar," the Hall of Fame trainer said. "We’re very lucky, but feel for those who weren’t as fortunate.”

Del Mar chief operating officer Josh Rubenstein said the racetrack is open to any evacuated horses from San Luis Rey and will have no problems handling the full capacity of the training center, which has between 400-500 horses stabled there.

"We will take every single horse we can get," Rubenstein said. "We're open to anything with four legs."

Del Mar racing secretary David Jerkens said vehicles with horses and other animals have been consistently arriving at the racetrack. Feed has been provided by West Coast Feed, while volunteers and staff are working to get stalls ready and bedded for the incoming animals. As of 9:45 p.m PT, Jerkens said about 250 evacuated Thoroughbreds were on the Del Mar grounds.

Del Mar's George Bradvica, who is coordinating the volunteer effort there, said there will be a need for volunteers around 2 a.m. PT at Del Mar. At that time, they'll be assigning people to shedrows to watch horses for signs of colic, and to make sure they all have water.

Los Alamitos announced late Thursday night that its daytime Dec. 8 Thoroughbred racing card has been cancelled.

My early 2018 Top 20 Kentucky Derby prospects. Numbers in parenthesis next to the trainer indicate their current Derby odds at the Wynn.

    1. Good Magic (Chad Brown, 14): Very impressive when winning the BC Juvenile, and he only figures to improve with racing and increased distances. He's the horse with the least amount of question marks.
    2. Bolt d’Oro (Mick Ruis, 7): His FrontRunner is still the best performance by a 2YO. I do think it is fair to question the trainer, as he’s never had to handle his own horse through the Triple Crown trail.
    3. Principe Guilherme (Steve Asmussen, 20): Has won easily in both starts and has been fast in doing it, with his allowance win around two turns; he's a son of Aubby K, who won the G1 Humana Distaff at 7 furlongs.
    4. Solomini (Bob Baffert, 18): Good 2nd in the Juvenile, and followed that up by finishing first in the Cashcall Futurity but was DQ’d to 3rd (which I don’t totally agree with that decision).
    5. McKinzie (Bob Baffert, 11): Ultimately placed 1st in that Cashcall Futurity, but you can argue he could have been DQ’d as well. Still showed some greenness in that race, and with only two starts, there is still room to grow for him.
    6. Montauk (Todd Pletcher, 22): Thought his maiden win was the best performance by any 2YO in New York. Would be in the top three if I wasn’t a little concerned with how slow he has been to return to the races since breaking his maiden.
    7. Enticed (Kiaran McLaughlin, 20): Still needs to get faster, but he already has a win at Churchill in the Kentucky Jockey Club; and he has a fantastic pedigree (his dam is multiple G1 winner It’s Tricky, and she was very much a two turn horse).
    8. Instilled Regard (Jerry Hollendorfer, 65): The horse that took the worst of it in the Cashcall Futurity, but thought he ran a very game 3rd (ultimately placed 2nd). Sounds like he is headed to the LeComte, which is kind of intriguing to me for Hollendorfer to ship him out there rather than keep him at Santa Anita.
    9. Catholic Boy (Jonathan Thomas, 30): Looked good in winning the Remsen. Distance looks to be no problem, but I still wonder if he ultimately does his best work on the turf.
    10. Marconi (Todd Pletcher, 40): Very expensive colt (upwards of $2 million), as his dam is a half to Mucho Macho Man. Both of his races have been at 9 furlongs (with one win), so he seems to be a classic distance type of horse. Biggest negative is that he really hasn’t run a fast race yet.
    11. Tiz Mischief (Dale Romans, 40): Solid 2nd behind Enticed in the Jockey Club. He’s the Romans horse that interests me most, as I think he has more upside than Free Drop Billy or Hollywood Star, and he doesn’t have the injury questions that Dak Attack has.
    12. New York Central (Steve Asmussen, 100): I do have some distance concerns, but I thought he was very impressive breaking his maiden at Churchill last time out, and he’s been competitive working with Principe Guilherme. Asmussen has a pretty strong group this year.
    13. Nero (Bob Baffert, 75): Still a maiden, but has only run once and only at 5 ½ furlongs, where he finished second to a horse in Beautiful Shot that should be a very nice sprinter. I do wonder if he is more of a middle distance type of horse than a true classic distance horse, though.
    14. Greyvitos (Adam Kitchingman, 175): Had a strong 2YO campaign, punctuated with the win in the Springboard Mile (which now earns Derby points), and has been running fast races. Of all the horses on this list, he’s the one I have the most concerns with regards to going longer distances.
    15. Vino Rosso (Todd Pletcher, 40): He has faced absolutely nobody, but at least has done it the right way. The way Pletcher is handling him at this point sort of reminds me of how he handled Stradivari a couple years ago and Always Dreaming last year. Whether he is as good as those two remains to be seen.
    16. High North (Brad Cox, 125): Ran a better than it looks on paper 4th in the Kentucky Jockey Club, as he had a troubled trip, especially going into the first turn. Could see him becoming the local horse to beat in Arkansas, in what doesn’t seem like the strongest group at this time.
    17. Lone Sailor (Tom Amoss, 65): Another horse that I think ran better in the Kentucky Jockey Club (he finished 5th) than it appears, as he had to go at least 5-wide around the far turn. He was making up ground fast at the end.
    18. Peace (Richard Mandella, 25): Looked professional in breaking his maiden last time out, though I think it was arguably the least impressive of his three career races. It impressed somebody, though, as his odds crashed from 150-1 to 25-1. We’ll learn more about his form in the Sham, as both horses that beat him (Shivermetimbers and Mourinho (both of whom I prefer sprinting)) will take a shot against McKinzie.
    19. Avery Island (Kiaran McLaughlin, 45): I don’t see distance being a huge problem with him. I do wonder how good he actually is.
    20. Analyze It (Chad Brown, 60): He’s the best 2YO turf horse in the country, and should run all day. The dirt is a massive question, though, and Brown may think so highly of him as a turf horse that they don’t want to ruin his development by running on dirt. I honestly hope he does keep him on the turf, as I think he could be a star on that surface.

    Honorable Mentions:
    Dak Attack (Dale Romans, 50)
    Flameaway (Mark Casse, 125)
Free Drop Billy (Dale Romans, 50)
He Hate Me (Horatio DePaz, 125)
    Meistermind (Steve Asmussen, 225)
    Mendelssohn (Aidan O’Brien, 40)
St. Patrick’s Day (Bob Baffert, 40)
    Strike Power (Mark Hennig, 60)
    Tap Daddy (Steve Asmussen, 100)

Sham Stakes (Saturday Race 5, Santa Anita, 1 mile, 10 points)

Won't go too in depth here, as I think McKinzie (6) is just better than the rest of the field, and expect him to win at what should be something like 1-5 or 2-5. I probably won't have a dime on the race, but if I did, the way I'd probably go about it is to connect McKinzie with My Boy Jack (1), who could close in to 2nd or 3rd at a bit of a price if there is a hot pace. The logical other horses to use underneath with My Boy Jack are Mourinho (4) and Shivermetimbers (5), of which I prefer Mourinho of the two.

    Sham selections:
    1. McKinzie (6) 3-5
    2. Mourinho (4) 4-1
    3. My Boy Jack (1) 12-1

Not sure how I missed the news about Greyvitos having bone chips removed. With that to go along with the distance concerns, I'd bump him off the list. I'd bump everyone beneath him up one spot and put Dak Attack 20th, though I am very concerned about his shins.

If I were to put them in tiers, I would have my top 3 in one tier, horses 4-8 as my second tier, 9-12 as my third tier, and then after that it gets murky. More horses will emerge, but I think it is a pretty top heavy group right now.

i kind of like us navy flag as a long shot if o'brien brings him back and tries to win the derby.

the cashcall futurity was a total cluster; i wouldn't read much into that race. i don't think there is any chance ruis has bolt d'oro ready to go, which is a shame because that horse would be a beast in the right hands.

I wouldn't have much of an interest in US Navy Flag if he came over. He didn't do much of anything in the Juvenile to make me think he'd have a shot. I'd keep him on the turf. If I were to have any interest in an O'Brien horse, I'd rather see Mendelssohn or Saxon Warrior. I think Saxon Warrior may be the more talented of those two, but Mendelssohn is probably safer to try on the dirt given his pedigree.

I'd agree the Cashcall Futurity was a cluster if you were trying to determine who ran the best race out of the top three. But I think you can at least take out of it that the top three horses are all pretty solid. It was a fast race, and they were so far out ahead of the other two horses. I sort of compare it to the Los Al Futurity a couple years back with Dortmund, Firing Line, and Mr. Z, just with a more erratic finish (and I wouldn't put any of the McKinzie/Solomini/Instilled Regard trio on the level of Dortmund or Firing Line given where they are at right now). I think it was the 3rd best 2YO race last year, behind the Juvenile and the FrontRunner.

I still want to see him do it one more time on dirt before jumping all in on him, especially against a better field. He didn't beat much in the Remsen, as his chief competitors were Avery Island, who I have some doubts on how good he really is, and Alkhaatam, who is still a maiden.

Neither blew me away, but I'd go with McKinzie if for no other reason than I though Mask had a really easy trip, setting a soft pace by Gulfstream standards.

Not that McKinzie had a tough trip, but it wasn't the absolute candy trip that Mask had.

The Lecomte should be a fun race this weekend. Has a couple high-end horses in Principe Guilherme and Instilled Regard and some solid depth behind them as well.

The Jerome, on the other hand, I'm not too impressed with on first glance.

Quick picks for the two Derby point races on Saturday:

    Lecomte:
    1. Instilled Regard (10) 4-1 - Going with him simply because: 1) he'll be the better price, 2) outside draw for PG, and 3) seasoning edge
    2. Principe Guilherme (12) 5-2 - But even if he finishes second, I still like him a bit more longer term.
    3. Lone Sailor (1) 15-1 - Will also be mixing in the 8, Zing Zang, in exotics. Think a hot pace will help both those horses at what should be decent prices. I kind of expect Zing Zang to take more money, as I've heard a lot of Creator comparisons to him. I like Lone Sailor's upside a touch more of the two, as well.

    Jerome:
    1. Smooth B (5) 30-1 - I'm planning on there being moisture in the track, which should help him at what should be a big price. Going with him is more a statement of the rest of the field, though.
    2. Firenze Fire (7) 3-5 - Clearly the horse to beat, but take out his Champagne, and he's only a slight step better than everyone else.
    3. Old Time Revival (6) 10-1 - Improved last time out off of a long layoff.

I heard it on one of the podcasts yesterday that I pretty much agree with. If PG wins today given his outside draw and the big step up in competition, he's definitely the real deal.

For those that don't remember, Firenze Fire is the horse that beat Good Magic and Enticed (Jeremy Plonk's #1 horse right now) in the Champagne but then got buried in Breeders Cup. I liked his Champagne because he had to go wide on the turn to get it done. He has to put up or shut up today.

For the Smarty Jones Stakes, I like Combatant (1) to win. Runners from the Springboard Mile have historically had success here, and I thought both he and Greyvitos ran well in that spot when they were well clear of the rest of the field. Hoping he goes off at second choice behind Mourinho (4), given Baffert's history in Arkansas. And to be fair, if Mourinho were to win one of the Arkansas races, this is probably the one, since I think he'll be a sprinter. Maybe he can get the mile, but I think 6.5-7 furlongs will be best for him. Navistar (6) is the other horse that will take money, and he probably has more long term potential than Mourinho does, at least going longer, but I haven't been that impressed with either of his first two races. Not a race I would play in the exotics, but if Combatant goes off at second or third choice, he might be worth a win bet.

    Smarty Jones:
    1. Combatant (1) 2-1
    2. Mourinho (4) 3-2
    3. Navistar (6) 5-2

    Pegasus World Cup post positions:

    1. Singing Bullet (30-1)
    2. West Coast (8-1)
    3. Stellar Wind (30-1)
    4. Sharp Azteca (6-1)
    5. Collected (8-1)
    6. Gunnevera (15-1)
    7. Fear The Cowboy (30-1)
    8. War Story (25-1)
    9. Toast of New York (20-1)
    10. Gun Runner (4-5)
    11. Seeking The Soul (25-1)
    12. Giant Expectations (30-1)

Two also eligibles: Giuseppe the Great; Game Over

Of all the big names in this race, I think I'm most interested in seeing how Toast of New York runs. He's only run once on dirt, and that was the time he finished 2nd as a 3YO in the Classic in 2014 (the Bayern/California Chrome/Shared Belief year). However, he was retired, and didn't run for three years before being brought back in December, where he won at 1 1/4 miles on a synthetic track in Europe against a weak field.

I think he's the only horse in this race that has a chance to beat Gun Runner if Gun Runner runs his 'A' race. But who knows if you'll get anything close to Toast of New York's 'A' race. He's very much a high risk, high reward type of play.

texas; texas racing will be terrible until they legalize gambling at the racetracks and advance deposit wagering

i dont think either will happen any time soon because of lobbying by louisiana and oklahoma casinos and baptists--mostly the out of state casinos, though.

i got a suite at sam houston this sunday for the races. two grade 3s, including the 400k houston ladies classic. jose ortiz will be in town.

Haven't handicapped the full Gulfstream card, but for the Pegasus World Cup, I just think Gun Runner goes out a winner.

    Pegasus selections:

    1. Gun Runner (10) 4-5
    2. West Coast (2) 8-1
    3. Gunnevera (6) 15-1
    4. Sharp Azteca (4) 6-1

Going to throw out Collected (really didn't like his last race), and will also mix in Toast of New York (9) in exotics on the off chance that he runs close to his best race.

Gun Runner had a perfect trip and made it look too damn easy.

And to be honest, Gun Runner didn’t look great in the post parade. But the race set up perfectly for him, and he just made Asmussen $700,000 (if not more). He’s not a Super Horse, but he’s a great horse.

Gunnevera beating Fear the Cowboy cost me a lot of money

pretty epic comeback he had. from probably DFL to winning on one race. seems like someone else wouldve had that. didn't take much imagination to have gun runner over west coast in the exacta.
