I’ve gotten old. 5 Years ago I went to cook off and you lost service immediately, lost my friends in the ruckus a few hours later and you had to take a cab (uber hadn’t caught on yet) to Jackson’s to keep it going cause I knew someone would be there. Now I had service the whole time, my wife told me not to drink so much,I complained about it being packed and Jackson’s is closed. The weather was nice and so was the bbq. I will probably be puking in a few hours.
For the record I think I typed cookoff and then when it autocorrected to the space between the words I went back and lost track of what I was typing
It sucks Jackson's is no longer, enjoyed watching the LSU games there. I did try the BBQ place that they built next to it, The Pit Room. I'm gonna say it...best bbq in Houston!
If you haven't had their chicken tacos yet, try them next time--my favorite thing to get there, as well as a favorite dish among some of the newer BBQ spots around town. I always like to support Pinkerton's and Gatlin's when i can due to some school connections (although they're certainly not hurting for business by any means), but we live a few blocks from Pit Room so it's definitely the easiest option to get to among these more recent additions to Houston BBQ. And a quick random Jackson's connection, our 2-year old daughter is in the same preschool class as Buck Baker's son (Buck owned Jackson's before selling it to the Pit Room); Buck is a really nice guy and very outgoing/personable, which certainly had to help a lot when running a bar. Some of the bar staff is the same between Jackson's and the Patio--and i'll always remember being at the Patio for Game 7 of the World Series with a crew of close friends from HS--but it definitely seems like there were some Jackson's regulars that haven't quite stuck around for the new ownership group, especially during SEC football games last season.
i live at the hanover down the street from pit room. i'm there probably 2x per week. their green beans are unreal.
I have not tried the chicken tacos but I will when I go for lunch on Friday. They had wagyu brisket a couple weeks ago and it definitely moved the needle. I never met Buck but I knew Ginny Jackson well, who was the other co-owner, I guess.
is this the hanover across from disco kroger on montrose at hawthorne? I used to live in a duplex next door to griff's on roseland, which wasn't ideal for law school, even if griff's rarely had much of a crowd. Regardless, i assume you've heard the news that a texadelphia will be going in across the street where that yucatan taco stand had been? And a shake shack is going in where that burger king was on westheimer between the valero and hay merchant.
I never met her husband. She sold my friend his house and she was at a couple of their parties. Too bad you didn't make the connection earlier...you could have enjoyed some drinks on the bro discount
Yes, that's her, she's a pretty successful residential broker, while her husband does commercial real estate/land work and is a great guy. And yes, that is too bad sir. I have 2 young kids and don't make it out nearly as much as i used to, so i probably would've been too tired to make it over there half the times anyway. But I'm a lifelong Houstonian and should check out this thread more often. I did make it out for a bit last night to catch up with some friends from school at the Kirby Ice House and it was pretty good night... at least until i decided to walk to the jack in the box down the street once the rockets game was over, not one of my better decisions...
I used to live right across the street from Kirby ice house. I have made that shameful walk to jack in the box several times.
shit mang, just seeing this. I finished the night with QOTSA, left early. Festival wasn't too bad though, weather was great
did you go to the website and make an appointment? i think that's what I did and was in and out of there in 20 minutes.
also if anyone wants to buy my Astros tickets for the day game vs the Orioles on Wednesday 4/4 let me know. 4 tickets club level even with first base. They're on stub hub for 68 right now--will sell to someone on here for $200 total
