Did I ever tell you guys about the time a grouse tried to kill my buddy and I?
We're coming down from the mountain after a long day of shooting. We stop because there's this grouse about 40' away in the middle of the road hiking our way. We put it in park and discuss our next move, which was to sit idle and wait it out. This cunt walks all the way up to the truck, stops, and jumps up on the hood. At this point we start laughing. This guy is angry as fuck and he's looking for a way into the cab of the truck. He hops up onto the door's mirror. Our windows are halfway down. Being the bright guys we are reaching out the window to pet him is the obvious choice given the situation. Bam, he bites, blood drawn! We're now laughing hysterically.
I don't know if this guy thinks were here to fuck his girls or he simply doesn't like being laughed at but around that time he jumps off the mirror and tries to fly into the cab of the truck through the driver side window. It's only halfway down and he can't fit while flapping his pussy little grouse wings. He turns away from the truck and flies about 15' down the hillside. We can no longer see him from the truck so we exit the vehicle. We're standing on the side of the road and the grouse is hiking back up the hill towards us. My buddy thinks our next move is to lay flat on our stomach to see what he does when he gets back to the top of the hill. I say hell no and get back in the truck. So my buddy is laying there on his belly waiting for this grouse. The grouse reaches the top of the hill and heads straight for him. My buddy starts to put his hands up in front of his face while pulling them closer to his body. The grouse doesn't even hesitate to jump over his hands and go straight for my buddy's eye. I have a front row seat for this and that grouse was only about two inches from blinding my buddy in one eye. I don't know how he knew to go for the eyes but that was clearly his intention. My buddy jumps up and gets in the truck. We have clearly lost the battle and decide it's time to leave. While driving away we could see in the mirror that psycho was walking down the road after us. I'll never forget that bird. Does anyone know what kind of grouse it is?
I was reminded about this story when I was sent an article from earlier this year about a grouse attacking firefighters (same state).
Pretty cool pic from a couple days ago. Not sure I’ve ever had a pic of or seen a bachelor group this big.
I took this guy last year- can’t wait to get back out
Anybody kill any birds this last weekend?
Sunday was the opener for early goose here in MN. We have exclusive permission to hunt a gravel pit where hundreds of birds stay overnight on the pond. 5 guys, 5 limits. It really isn't fair.
Our season starts Saturday.
Had a weak start yesterday but hoping to get out some more in the coming weeks. It’s been years since I’ve hunted and it was fun just getting back out in a field.
Was already planning on doing a bit of deer hunting on our 40 acres in Arkansas this year. Been watching 2 doe with 2 yearlings.
But a few weeks back went fishing with my dad at the White River Refuge. To fish there had to get a use permit, $20 for the year, and can fish all you want and bow hunt. But they also had quota hunt lottery for muzzle loader and modern gun, 2 3-day runs. Well emails got sent out today and we both got permits for both hunts.
I haven't been hunting since I was a kid, so I'm pretty excited to get out there, especially this area that we've been fishing all my life.
But, now we gotta start getting our shit together. Any recs on some good GPS devices to use? Can't take ATVs off trails so there will be some trekking involved.
Shot 6 doves during our hunt. That's an improvement over the 3 I shot last year. Missed 5-10 that I should've had. Dove hunting is really fun compared to other types of hunting because there is a lot of action.
Use the OnX Hunt Map or Huntstand apps on your phone. Both will allow you to mark all kinds of things like deer trails and sign, access points, stand locations, etc. I use HuntStand mostly because it can be shared with my friends and co-workers (I think OnX can too but I just started using it). From a mapping standpoint (especially public land), OnX is top notch. I think it might cost $9.99/year or something like that while HuntStand is free for what I use it for. But OnX has hybrid mapping with topo overlaying the satellite images and a bunch of other features that I don't use. One of the YouTube channels I watch is The Hunting Public, and they pretty much swear by OnX.
OnX is awesome and if you hunt just one state the $29 annual fee is worth it.
Best part of OnX for me is it gives property lines and property owner names.
Yeah had another buddy tell me about OnX this morning. Said you can download the maps so you don't have to worry about cell signal. May be the play, but I'll look at all the options.
so does Hunt Stand
I use the free version
That’s why I got HuntStand originally. Gives you 10 free parcel checks per month to get owner info.
For anyone who's interested in the peopling of the Americas and the extinctions that happened towards the end of the Pleistocene, Meateater Pod 178 with David Meltzer is unbelievably interesting.
Hey there big fella.
Sat for the first time this year and got a 6pt. I knew I won't get but maybe 3 weekends all season, so I went ahead and stocked the freezer. I can wait it out the next time I go.
This guy has been hanging out around the neighborhood eating the walnuts
Any of you boys ever do warm weather bunny hunting? Was going to go this AM but everyone is telling me after the first frost.
I’ve heard first frost kills some bacteria they carry or something. Eating before that gets ya sick.
That’s a myth. Just check for worms (particularly in the liver) and cook it through.
Any of you guys hunt woodcock? Possible to without a dog?
I haven't but had a timber manager tell me he and his wife did riding logging roads
Just bought a little 14ft John boat with a 9.9hp to get on the bay for some ducks this year. Very stoked, got it for a steal.
This weekend will be my first hunt of the season after putting my stand up last weekend. Downside to hunting on agriculture land, access revolves around the harvest.
Here I am. Got my bow. Got my arrows. And my release is at home.
It was nice catching the sunrise and my throw and grow is looking pretty good. Those are about the only positives from the morning.
That’s sucks, but at least you’re in the woods without anyone or any bullshit to bother you. One of the best parts of hunting is the peace and quiet, IMO.
There's a short modern gun season right now on private land in our zone in Arkansas. Antlerless only. Been getting ready to go down and do some muzzle loader hunting at the White River, but gonna go sit in the stand I set up the next couple days. But drove to the other side of our pond and sat in the truck on the levee just to watch this afternoon. My dad sat for a bit and then decided to walk back to the house. I'm out there waiting and he texts me that the deer are about to come through. The way he worded it though, I though he was talking about the backside of our property. So I told him to shoot em. And then he sent back "Just watch." When I look up 2 doe are in the field and the big one is looking right at me. I had my earplugs going in and bullet in hand to load up sitting in the truck and take this broadside shot at 50ft or less when she started hissing at me. Then she bounced her happy ass outta there into the woods. Shit was funny. Not like I expected to shoot a deer today, but damn I was gonna try. She saw that truck and knew something was fucked up haha
Going on Saturday up to the Delaware water gap in NJ for a week of deer hunting. First time going very excited. Got a stand and have to figure out how to use the damn thing.
Sounds like you need a harness, just in case
Safety first, unless you plan on landing on the back of one with a knife
Was planning on landing on it’s back with a rear naked choke, knife clenched in my teeth just in case.
Rambo style, I like it
Season opened today. I’m at work.
Was planning to go early Thursday and hunt from Thursday afternoon until Sunday. Haven’t had rain in about two months so we couldn’t plant green fields a few weeks ago when we had originally intended. Well, a big storm decides to roll through today. So now we’re planting green fields all day Thursday and part of the day Friday. Slightly aggravated but at least we’ll get fields planted and they should hold up for later in the season.
Headed out into the deep shit for the weekend. White River Refuge quota hunt. 2500 people on each unit out there, gonna sound like WW3. Hope to see something at all but not counting on it. But worse case fish a few hours a day and enjoy the wilderness.
Any recommendations on a duck call for beginners and any guides on how to learn? Looking at calling Mallards.
YouTube to learn. Calls depend on what you want to spend. Duck Commander makes pretty solid cheap mass produced calls, but they’re tough to support.
Wear your orange.
Had a giant deer under my tree stand that turned out to be a big fat squirrel. The search continues.
Pro tip: if you can hear him, he isn't there
So I’m getting my first hunting rifle on Monday. My father gave me his old recurve now — Ben Pearson Javelina. I took it to the owner of a local archery range to have it refinished and he apparently gave it to the wrong customer. He feels terrible and told me he’ll get me a new bow, whatever I want. Instead, I suggested a hunting rifle since I already own a bow and use it to hunt.
Anyway, he’s getting me a Marlin .30-30 lever. Already bought a scope for it. I’m stoked.
I don’t know anything about your dads recurve, but I’d be more upset than you seem to be. And a marlin?
I mean, I’m disappointed, but being upset isn’t going to solve anything. He was upfront with me about it and I understand that mistakes happen.
He has a background in ballistics and is a big time hunter, he suggested a Marlin
I use a Marlin 3030 love it
The Marlin has a side eject so a scope is possible
