That guy is so damn lucky. Would've been so hard not to panic in a situation like that but it seems cooler heads prevailed.
Happy to provide free advice to either. Just send me a DM. Or just send them the post storm long post I do.
i'm running for governor of florida and my message is simply that I plan to build a mountain range 100 miles away surrounding the entire coast
Well AC company just came out. Compressor got fried during the storm. He has no clue when a new one will be in with everything going on. Looks like we’re going to be a house of fans for a while. Certainly blessed with what all others are dealing with.
A disgusting portion of America is surrounded by a wall - effectively turning it into an open air prison - and a president is also trapped in there? I like this plan. You just need to keep this guy away from it.
It doesn't help now, but we've started keeping a compressor on hand bc they have a bit of a shorter shelf life in FL and they're relatively easy to change out. Winds up saving a $100+ visit from a tech.
My house held up reasonably well, and thankful I put impact doors and an impact sliding glass door in the house in the past year. Our roof lost a ton of shingles, so I’m probably looking at a new roof. Thankfully, there is no water damage in the house, but it’s a damn mess in the front and back yard now, and I’ve spent all morning cleaning up. It’s definitely going to take a while to clean this mess up, and I have no idea how long it will be until I get power back. Glad it’s cooled off a little down here.
It’s apparently a nightmare with little to no gas available, sounds like that should start getting fixed later today. Of course I’m sure a lot of gas was wasted by idiots driving around for no reason.
Anyone in the area who's in need of some supplies DM me. Got gas, propane, water, battery fans, and one of these puppies
I would recommend getting a surge protector when you get it fixed. NEC code got changed in 2020 to require all new builds to have a whole house surge protector. You can also get a separate one for just your ac unit.
SC has reopened most of its National Forest today and Nantahala National Forest in NC also reopened. Below is an update from GSMNP on the eastern side. The National Park Service continues to assess conditions and address damage following the impacts from Hurricane Helene in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park experienced substantial damage particularly in North Carolina, including Balsam Mountain, Big Creek and Cataloochee Valley. Within the park, the Cataloochee Valley saw the most significant impacts from Hurricane Helene and will be closed until further notice as staff address damage. Flooding from Rough Fork Creek washed out several roads in the valley. Upper Cataloochee Valley Road saw the worst damage and is not drivable. Various levels of erosion and flooding impacted all trails in Cataloochee Valley and nearly all footlog bridges in the area were washed away during the storm. Cataloochee Valley also experienced fallen trees, flooding at campsites and damaged power lines. There were impacts to historic buildings, particularly the Caldwell Barn, which park staff are currently working to stabilize. The Balsam Mountain and Big Creek areas are also currently closed until further notice due to storm damage and safety concerns. Most trails on the Tennessee side of the park are open; several trails on the North Carolina side are closed. The park continues to assess the trails on the eastern end of the park to find the western edge of the damage in the backcountry. Examples of trails that were severely impacted include Big Creek Trail, which saw damage throughout its length and lost a 70-foot steel bridge and its abutments. Gunter Fork Trail experienced a landslide that took out 100 feet of trail. While there has been some significant damage in the eastern area of the park, many miles of trails in western sections of the park have low impacts and few downed trees. Visitors planning to hike in the Smokies are encouraged (as always) to check the park website and/or talk to staff in visitor centers or the backcountry office about current trail conditions. Most park roads are open with a few exceptions including Foothills Parkway East, Lakeview Drive, roads in Cataloochee Valley, roads in Balsam Mountain area and Parsons Branch Road (visitors should check the park map). US441/Newfound Gap Road is open 24 hours a day. Commercial vehicles are prohibited in the park, with the exception of the Spur. All park visitor centers and most park facilities are open. All Tennessee park campgrounds are currently open. North Carolina campgrounds are currently closed, and park staff continue to assess for when they can be safely opened. Had to come back tonight, no power for me in south Tampa. Feels so creepy. Was weird passing like 30+ of those power trucks going the other way (east toward Orlando). I’m sure there are reasons that make sense it just seemed odd, they’re needed along the coast.
Rutherford County (where Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are) has located all 1,107 missing people safe and sound. Only 3 deaths reported. There is 16 acres of debris to clean up in Lake Lure. Yancey County's sheriff's office says 9 people have died in the storm and 4 people are still missing. (Burnsville, Mt. Mitchell) Buncombe County (Asheville) has reported 72 dead. Unclear on how many are still missing, maybe still up to 200.
Gas shortages in Tampa are being fixed but still not sure where Meatball Ron’s “50k linemen” are. Patted himself on the back about it at every news conference, no one to be seen in Tampa. Tampa Electric says Thursday for power, hope they’re lowering expectations.
The network that coordinates moving all these contract linemen all over the country when disasters strike is nothing short of amazing. It works very well and is very efficient and has absolutely zero to do with local or state governments or elected officials and anything any of them do or say
It’s all OT. 24/7. Neighbor is a fire inspector, he spent a week on the west coast after Ian and came home with 15k.
