Miami Dolphins (Current projected cap space: $42.3 million)

On the chopping block: LB Koa Misi ($6.5 million cap hit; $2.3 million dead money). Misi just wrapped the seventh year of his NFL career, all with Miami. But a neck injury limited him to three games and he turned 30 in January, so the price tag for him—even keeping in mind that he played well back in 2015—is steep. Misi also has not played a full 16-game regular season since his rookie campaign. The only thing that may hold Miami back from cutting him loose is its relative lack of depth at the linebacker position.

Ndamukong Suh is cornerstone of Dolphins' recent run in free agency

The Miami Dolphins have been among the more active teams when it comes to signing big-name free agents over the past three years. Here’s a look at how those decisions have panned out on the field:

Total signings: 32* (tied for ninth in the NFL)

Total contract value: $282.625 million (sixth in the NFL)

    Three-year W-L: 24-24

Biggest hit: The Dolphins had to break the bank for Ndamukong Suh in 2015 to the tune of $114.375 million. At the time Suh was the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle, but he also was one of the safest bets in free agency in the past decade. Suh has produced individual numbers -- 133 tackles, 11 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in two seasons -- and there have been games where he's downright unblockable. For example, he had a career-high 12 tackles last season in Week 2 against the New England Patriots. However, Miami’s run defense hasn’t improved much since signing Suh. The Dolphins were 30th against the run last year -- but it takes 11 defenders to be good against the run, and Suh’s teammates have not held up their end. Still, Miami made the playoffs for the first time since 2008, and Suh led the way with his fifth Pro Bowl campaign.

Biggest miss: Miami thought it was getting a dominant pass-rusher last season when it signed former Pro Bowl defensive end Mario Williams to a two-year, $17 million contract. The Dolphins lost 2015 sack leader Olivier Vernon to free agency and figured pairing Williams with Cameron Wake would make for a dynamic pair coming off the edge. However, Williams turned out to be the team’s biggest free-agent bust of 2016. He lost his starting job early in the season and recorded a career-low 1.5 sacks. Williams suffered through injuries, and often the effort level wasn’t there. Miami cut him after just one season.

Sneaky-good move: The Dolphins went under the radar when they signed cornerback Brent Grimes to a one-year contract in 2013. Grimes was coming off a season-ending Achilles injury and signed a short-term contract to prove he was healthy and could return to Pro Bowl form. Grimes did that and more by making two Pro Bowls during his three-year tenure in Miami. He signed a $32 million extension in 2014 and played two more quality seasons, and he remains one of the best corners Miami has signed in the past decade. He recorded 141 tackles, 13 interceptions and missed one game over that span.

Verdict: The Dolphins get an average grade in free agency. Previously they were among the “offseason champions” by making splashy signings. They spent more than $150 million and $97 million in free agency in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and that didn’t pan out as Miami continued its lengthy playoff drought. But the stars aligned in 2016 as the Dolphins mixed very good coaching in the first year under Adam Gase with prudent signings to help round out a 10-win season and first playoff berth since 2008. Miami spent approximately $29 million in free agency last year but made good moves to get quality contributions from players such as Isa Abdul-Quddus, Andre Branch and Jermon Bushrod.

    Miami Dolphins

    Approximate space: $36.7 million

For the immediate future, the Dolphins' cap space will be limited by the decision to pay two players high-end "quarterback money." The actual quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, will count $20.3 million toward the 2017 cap. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will count $19.1 million. General manager Mike Tannenbaum likes to be active in free agency, and he has the space if desired, but he also has some emerging players to take care of soon. Among them: receivers Kenny Stills and Jarvis Landry and safety Reshad Jones.

Damn Phinsiders is saying Branch may get 7-9mm a year which would likely price us out. That would put us in dire straights at DE.

Even before the Branch news, just reading between the lines, I would be stunned if we went anywhere but DE in Rd 1

Way too early but Carroo looks to be pretty bad too. Gave up a ton for that guy. One of the few bad draft days moves the last two years or so. Feel we've done a lot better on draft day the past two years

    Latest Headlines

Dolphins making 'push' to keep Kenny Stills
    [IMG]
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Dolphins are making a "push" to keep free agent Kenny Stills.

For a while it looked like Stills would be headed elsewhere, but apparently the Dolphins don't feel that Leonte Carroo is ready to be an every-down player. They've reportedly offered Stills a deal in the range of $8 million annually. Last week it was reported that Stills could eclipse $12 million a year on the open market, so he'd be taking a significant discount to return to Miami.

I have no idea why we would pay Stills 8 million but oh well. I don't think we skip much of a beat without him. Trust in Gase I guess

I would much rather spend that kind of money at DE or LB

Wow that's a gross overpay. I guess our back was against the wall and maybe we had to. I know it's all about the structuring and we don't know much about the deal but we just gave him more money than Pouncey

Dude he is a QB. Get out of here with that comparison. It's a gross overpay but we can talk about some other team grossly overpaying other players like Glennon if it makes us all feel better

Ok. Pierre garçon got 16 million in year 1. Contracts are out of control. Yes the fins overpaid. But when you suck in the draft and continually miss on picks, you have no choice

I think the Stills re-signing was pretty important. We were looking for a competent deep threat that had good chemistry with Tannehill for how long again? 4 or 5 years? Stills isn't Megatron but good, productive deep threats don't grow on trees either.

    DE Andre Branch, Dolphins
    Grade: D+

Let's review: The Dolphins have one of the league's most expensive defensive lines, anchored by two elite players in Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake. They wanted a third pass-rusher last offseason and paid a premium for Mario Williams while quietly adding Branch, a former Jaguars bust, on a one-year, $2.5 million deal to serve as a backup. Williams busted in spectacular (if predictable) fashion, while Branch was a useful reserve, racking up 5.5 sacks and 12 hits on 430 pass rush attempts.

You would think that the Dolphins would figure that most players are going to look effective playing next to two Hall of Fame-caliber defenders and allow Branch to leave while signing the next buy-low opportunity to play alongside Suh and Wake. Instead, the Dolphins paid a hefty premium to keep Branch around, giving him $27 million over three years. Much depends on the structure of this deal, but in a draft exceedingly deep in pass-rushers, Miami likely overpaid to hold onto a player whom it could have replaced at a fraction of the cost
