Notable, but not surprising, that DEs Dolphins bringing in --- Ayers and Jason Jones -- are starters. They don't want Wake playing too much.

This was my thinking three stacks. Elliot screams to me of a RB who will get stuffed for a short gain/loss on a good amount of his carries but will eventually break one for a long gain/TD.

I like Alexander ok too, but it concerns me to take a press-man corner that doesn't have good length by nfl standards. He and Apple are close, Hargreaves and Ramsey better than both by miles IMO

The Dolphins have lined up multiple visits while also holding discussions with cornerbacks, guards, linebackers, backup quarterbacks and No. 4 receivers.

    First, to recap the visits:

    • Denver running back CJ Anderson, a restricted free agent, signed a four-year offer sheet during his visit at Dolphins headquarters today.

The Broncos would have five days to match and would not receive compensation from the team that signs him.

The Dolphins believe Anderson could give them exactly what Lamar Miller could, if not more.

He has averaged 4.8 yards per carry in three seasons, all with Denver. Conversely, Miller has a 4.5 career average.

Anderson started seven games in 2014 (when Adam Gase was Denver's offensive coordinator) and six in 2015.

Last season, he had 152 carries for 720 yards, a 4.7 average. He ran for 234 yards on 54 carries in the playoffs, including 23 for 91 in the Super Bowl.

As Denver reporter Mike Klis noted, Anderson was on the verge of flying to Chicago to visit with the Bears yesterday before the Dolphins convinced him to come to Miami.

    • With Robert Ayers canceling his Dolphins visit and opting to go to Jacksonville instead, Jason Jones looks like the logical choice for Miami’s vacancy at defensive end, as part of a three-man rotation with Cameron Wake and Mario Williams.

Jones. 29, started 15 games for Detroit last season and had 31 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus rated him the 43rd best edge defender last season.

He had five sacks for Detroit as a starter in 2014. Jones, 29, has played eight NFL seasons: four in Tennessee, one in Seattle, three in Detroit.

He was a second-round pick out of Eastern Michigan in 2008.

At defensive end, the Dolphins also have Terrence Fede and Damontre Moore under contract, and Dion Jordan is eligible to return from suspension next month.

    • Though they don’t have a need for a starting tackle, the Dolphins are bringing in Jermon Bushrod, 31, who started six consecutive years (four with the Saints, two with Chicago), before starting only four games in Chicago last year. The Bears released him in February.

He had labrum surgery in mid-February and the recovery timetable is about four months, ESPN's Adam Caplan reported. The Bears cut him in February, citing a failed physical. Bushrod, who also had back problems last year, is visiting Minnesota as well.

Bushrod isn’t under the impression that he’s coming here to take over for Branden Albert or anything like that. Miami likes Albert. The Dolphins are merely looking for depth.

    OTHER STUFF

    • The Dolphins have shown interest in veteran quarterback Luke McCown in their pursuit of a new backup to replace Matt Moore. The sides have discussed him visiting, perhaps in the next couple of days.
McCown, 34, has nine touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in 12 seasons, with a 71.3 passer rating.

But he was very good in his one start last season, completing 32 of 39 passes for 335 yards in a 27-22 week two loss to Carolina. He attempted only one other pass all season as Drew Brees’ backup.

McCown has started 10 games in his career, including four the Saints as a rookie, and also has played for Cleveland, Tampa, Jacksonville and Atlanta.

Moore reportedly is visiting with Dallas today.

Other veteran backups available: Tarvaris Jackson (visited Miami last year before Moore resigned), Branden Weeden, Charlie Whitehurst, TJ Yates, Jimmy Clausen, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson, Ryan Lindley, Dan Orlovsky, Scott Tolzien, Mike Vick and Joe Webb.

Logan Thomas said he was told he will have a legitimate chance to win the backup job.

The Dolphins don't want to spend much money on a backup QB.

The Dolphins had interest in Drew Stanton but not at the price Miami gave him (two years, $6.5 million).

    • The Dolphins lost out in their efforts to land Vincent Rey, who re-signed with Cincinnati, but remain in the market for a veteran linebacker. Among those they’ve expressed interest in: Atlanta free agent O’Brien Schofield (16 games, 10 starts, 2 sacks last season). There’s no visit scheduled yet.

    • The Dolphins, searching for a No. 4 receiver, have inquired about Oakland free agent Andre Holmes, among others.

Holmes has played all five seasons with the Raiders and has 88 receptions for 1336 yards (15.2 yards per catch) and nine touchdowns.

He had 14 catches for 301 yards and four touchdowns last season in 16 games, including one start. He started 13 games in 2014 and caught 47 passes for 693 yards.

    • The Dolphins have inquired about a bunch of veteran guards, from Geoff Schwartz to Ted Larson and others. Louis Vasquez is on their radar, but Tennessee --- where he’s visiting in the next few days --- has been more aggressive.

Kiko Alonso signed a contract that adds an additional year to his current deal, which was set to expire after the 2016 season. He had a $991,418 salary cap number, but may have seen that increase some based on the new contract. The new contract will pay Alonso an "average $2.5 million per season." How exactly that $5 million is broken out is not yet clear.

    Dolphins finally address guard position

Here are the most interesting Miami Dolphins stories Friday from around the Web:

    • Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald writes the Dolphins signed guard Jermon Bushrod to a one-year contract.
Morning take: Bushrod played under head coach Adam Gase with theChicago Bears. The Dolphins need someone to compete with Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner and Jamil Douglas.

Oh ok Bushrod is a guard now I guess.

It may be the case that he plays G, but wouldn't strike me as too odd if it's tackle depth. Albert's injury history is not great, and Gase has used 6 OL sets effectively (with CJ Anderson no less) in the past.

A look at who's potentially in play for Dolphins' first-round pick after moving down five spots

Lots of Dolphins on a Friday:

    • The Dolphins’ decision to drop down from 8th to 13th in the first round of the draft --- compensation for acquiring Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell with Philadelphia --- significantly lessens the chances of landing UF’s Vernon Hargreaves (perhaps the draft’s best cover corner) or UCLA’s Myles Jack, the top linebacker in the draft and the player ticketed to Miami in Mel Kiper’s mock draft.

But falling five spots isn’t a setback in this particular draft, NFL draft guru Tony Paulineinsists. And privately, the Dolphins were comfortable doing this, believing there will be several quality players available at that lower pick.

“You can forget about Myles Jack,… but the Dolphins put themselves in a better position because the guys they wanted at 8 would have all been gone,” Pauline said by phone.

“Other players would have been reaches. [The 5-11] Hargreaves still may be there; there are a lot of teams that won’t draft corners that aren’t six feet. Any of the cornerbacks are good value there at 13 --- Hargreaves, [Ohio State’s 6-1] Eli Apple, [Clemson’s 5-11] Mackensie Alexander. [Alabama linebacker] Reggie Ragland would be a consideration there if they want to shore up the middle of that run defense.”

So who else could be available for Miami?

For perspective, the players that Kiper has going 10th to 13thh in his mock draft are Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson (“underrated as a complete defensive end in that he's good against the run” ) Georgia outside linebacker Leonard Floyd (“big time upside”); Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (“quickness to create havoc in the backfield working from the interior”) and Michigan State offensive tackle JackConklin (“if you just go on tape and forget pure potential, you would put Conklin much closer to the No. 1 and No. 3 picks in this mock draft”).

Kiper’s players going 14 to 17: Apple (“high-upside cornerback with size… impressive combination of size, athleticism and natural gifts for the position”); Mississippi receiver Laquan Treadwell; Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson and Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee.

Of that group, Lawson (a skilled pass rusher) would warrant consideration if he slips to 13th. So would the linebacker Floyd and cornerback Apple, because they play positions where the Dolphins could use help. Among the corners, Kiper doesn’t consider Clemson’s Alexander a first-round pick, though Pauline is high on him.

“Apple and Alexander aren’t as explosive as Hargreaves but they’re more well-rounded,” Pauline said.

Ragland also would be in play at No. 13, though Kiper has him 21st.

“When you combine that football intelligence with natural straight-line speed and toughness, you get the best inside linebacker prospect in this class,” ESPN’s Todd McShay said of Ragland, adding he’s “a great all-around player [who] routinely beat running backs and o-linemen around the edge during pass-rush drills at the Senior Bowl.”

The Dolphins’ haven’t identified defensive tackle as a need –-- despite their shortcomings against the run. So it’s questionable if Miami would select the 6-1, 299 pound Rankins (six sacks, 13 tackles for loss last season) or the 6-4, 312-pound Robinson, who had 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.

“You have Ndamukon Suh making all that money; you drafted Jordan Phillips high,” Pauline said. “Do you use another early pick to a third defensive tackle?”

Conklin and Treadwell wouldn’t seem to make sense for the Dolphins because they aren’t looking for a starting offensive tackle or starting receiver.

And there are size concerns with the 6-1, 218-pound linebacker Lee. “He’s more of a 20 to 32 guy,” NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said.

The Dolphins would like to add quality players at cornerback and linebacker and are always open to upgrading the defensive line.

So to me, the names that would make the most sense at 13 would be Hargreaves (if he somehow falls), Apple, Alexander, Floyd, Ragland and Lawson. And others could rise or fall into that range.

    • The Dolphins are hosting defensive end Jason Jones and cornerback Josh Robinsonon free agent visits today. Miami usually signs players it brings in for visits, or at least makes an offer. See the last post for more on both players.
