isis thinks the taliban is too soft and would love nothing else then to get the us or the global community re-entangled in afghanistan against the taliban they've fought each other for years and years
True. So I guess that post did age well! My mistake. We find ourselves, once again, in the precarious position of dealing with multiple warring factions that all want to kill us, and each other. You'd think we'd have considered this as a possibility and had some sport of plan. But I suppose if we just listen to the White House briefings every day, we can rest assured that despite reality, things are going really well. Guys, we are in contact with everyone who wants out. It's not a problem. Also, it's Trump's fault anyways.
My main question is how many Taliban soldiers and members were killed in this attack and how will the Taliban respond. This is their country now whether we like it or not, and I don't anticipate the US making a decision to extend our stay in Kabul due to this attack. We knew ISIS was planning something and this was a huge target for them. The goal is to minimize US and Afghanistan casualties going forward and its regrettable, but those soldiers died working to protect those who are trying to flee that country and their deaths are not in vain. Everyone over there had to know this was a possible threat and I wish there was a better way to ensure the safety of both the troops and those civilians.
all the western state departments started warning about an imminent attack yesterday, told their citizens to leave the airport area, etc
I think it was talked about earlier this week, more than 24 hours ago. Here are a couple tweets talking about intelligence reports of potential threats
Apparently it was known that this isis-k group had been video taping the area for awhile as well I heard this on a podcast from either yesterday or the day before
State Department has been clear about it for a while. They clearly had pretty good intelligence that this was coming. I don't generally like throwing the term hero around very much, but those Marines helping people evacuate who knew that this was coming, fit the bill.
While I could be way off here and i will admit I'm not following this as closely as some, my guess is these aren't the type of people the Taliban are after right now. They are more than likely after the Afghan nationals that helped US forces like interpreters or villagers or what not who gave our troops information. I'm not sure who would all be left there by this point and why we are giving them a list but now the Taliban have also been attacked are gonna be pissed so my guess is we are just trying everything possible to get the fuck out of dodge before this happens again. With the attack my guess is we will resume drone strikes on ISIS and possibly have teams in and out of country hunting and doing recon.
Yes, which could be afghan nationals that moved to the states to be doctors or engineers or what not and go back and visit family. It could also be our help over there I'm not sure, I've known our government leaders to do dumber things so I won't put it past them to name who helped us.
The list was people who have not yet made it through the security at the airport, so anyone who has moved to the US would not need to get through security at the Kabul airport. These are a list of people still in Kabul who are trying to evacuate. With our deadline to leave in less than 4 days, I would anticipate that a large number of names of those Afghan allies and green card holders, COULD, be targeted for attacks or to be sentenced to death for supporting the US and ANA. This could essentially be a kill list for every single person on those lists who does not make it onto an evacuating aircraft. At the rate we are going, there will be quite a few people on that list who end up staying in Afghanistan I would assume.
yea, congrats, you win. The Americans were killed by a different group of maniacs, which we could have had no way of predicting could happen. This is quite a victory for you.
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/us-...s-carry-daring-mission-save/story?id=79670236 Think quite a few people here know some SOF guys who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. These guys think of the interpreters as brothers and are going for them like brothers. Pretty inspiring to read.
We all know that the Taliban are the ones performing screening outside of the airport perimeter, correct? So we're all saying there's a 0.00% chance they let these individuals through knowingly with straight faces?
We assume that because ISIS is a common enemy, and because the Taliban have a vested interest in the US leaving, that the Taliban and the US will work together to help each other and thwart attempts by ISIS. And, of course, that presumes that terrorists will act logically and out of self-preservation. But we forget, I guess, that ISIS and the Taliban have a common enemy as well. And the US and ISIS have a common enemy. It seems precarious at best (and deadly at worst) to trust any of those groups to provide any safety or security of our troops, citizens, or allies.
He's suggesting the Taliban, who are performing the screenings, might "accidentally" allow some nefarious characters in. By "accidently" I mean not by accident at all.
28 Taliban fighters were amongst those killed in the recent airport attacks. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-...-afghan-evacuation-deadline-looms-2021-08-25/
What is the long game from doing this? Are they trying to get more US forces in the area? This doesn't help them get us out of Afghanistan.
I was just coming to post this. Really incredible story of men volunteering their lives to go try and rescue people who helped them in the past. Plus it’s hilarious they used the code word “Pineapple” for their password to get into the base. Some had pictures of a pineapple on their phone lol.
I'm not saying that's what happened here, but that's what VASooner suggested. I was just clarifying. That being said, I think it's a mistake to trust that any of the actors involved here will act logically or in their own best interest. These are people who literally blow themselves up. They demonstrate regularly that they are willing to operate in a way that's destructive to their best interest.
theres a very simple case for this being in the best interest of their ideological goals which people often put ahead of their personal well-being, see covid!
Ascribing any unified “long game” theory to any of these groups is pretty useless. They literally might have let a guy through in exchange for a couple months wages. Turns out he’s the guy that blows himself up. “Why would the Taliban take this strategy?” Meanwhile Joe Taliban takes 250 bucks and buys a cow and two goats for his family 200 kilometers away. That’s why. not saying it’s the case, but it’s as likely as any of the 25 other explanations as to why.
