I have a buddy heading overseas today. Is there anything particular he should be looking for over there that we can’t get here? I have him covered on the rum and bourbons but don’t know enough about the scotch.

To scotland? Or from a duty free perspective? If the latter, if you post the prices he can get, I'm sure we can chime in on the good deals.

He will be in Scotland briefly. But also just from a duty free perspective. I feel like we have a great ability to get scotch in the US and am not sure what rarer stuff would be over there.

I'm ready for a new bottle. Going to go unpeated (or at least less peated). Any recs? I was thinking about a glenmorangie nector d'or, oban 14, or dalwhinnie 15

I got a bottle of the Yamasaki 12 year and it is great for this. Nice change of pace from the true scotch impressions.

Glenmorangie is really low peat as well.

Anyone try the longrow red series? It looks like the 2018 isn't getting great reviews, so I may try to find an older one.

Went to a friend's house recently and let tried his vintage 1992 JW Blue. Neither of us are big JW fans but he was gifted this and it fine. Like all JW Blue just not worth price.

He also had a Cutty from 1946 and that stuff has gone way downhill over the last 70 years. It was really good even with all the cork bits in it.

I gifted myself Ardbeg Oogie recently and have been enjoying it but don't think I'll ever buy it again.

I'm thinking my next bottle will be Glenfarclas 25. It's consistently mentioned as one of the best buys out there - some places have it $150 range. Anyone tried it?

Never tried that one. That's sherried, right? Glendronach is releasing some new px finished 15 year this fall that should run about $100. I think I'm going to get that.

I totally forgot about this thread.

We just did a 10 day trip to IrelandScotland. The guys I was with really enjoy Glenmorangie when we are drinking scotch and one of the guys works for a distributor, so he setup a private tour. It was great to try a few of their "expressions" and to see the area. Really a great trip.

It was, it was fantastic, a much more full bodied flavor. It was fantastic and my favorite. We also had the Spios which had a bit more spice to it. I really liked the Signet and we ended up taking a bottle of that and the 10 year back to the house and drank that with dinner and around a fire pit that night.

Local store has Johnnie blue airplanes for $15 each. Not a huge fan of the stuff but since a pour is typically $50 I went ahead and bought a few. Just wish the 50 ml options around here were better than Glenlevit 12 and blended garbage. Would much prefer find some other bottle that's normally $200+.

Edit: also want to acknowledge that I'm now a big fan of Monkey Shoulder. As far as $30 bottles go it's my new favorite. A bit sweet and drinking a bunch will make you feel bad the next day but a great value overall.

Look at a a Glenmorangie. That’s a good lighter scotch. They have a mass produced version which is fairly inexpensive. You can get some nicer ones which can get closer to your budget.

Yes...scotch can be very different regionally. Generally:
    • If he likes unpeated sherried scotch (i.e., macallan), I'd recommend the glengoyne 21 or 25 or the glendronach 21.
    • If he likes unpeated and less of a sherry bomb, the glenmorangie signet is an interesting special occasion bottle. I wouldn't get this if this will be his only scotch in the collection.
    • For peated, you should be able to find any 20+ year old ardbeg or caol ila.
    • If he has a big collection, I'd recommend an independent bottling of a distillery that he likes as something unique. My favorites are cadenhead, gordon and macphail, exclusive malts, or signatory. They all make great stuff.

No, you guys should just make this one more active. I’ve had scotch a couple times and imo they are nothing alike.

I first saw this a few days ago and thought it interesting. Sucks how many scotches I love, especially all the Islay varieties, are owned by Diageo and Beam.

I don't think you can say nothing alike. I drink and enjoy both and they are both whiskey's. Sure they don't taste the same but neither do some bourbons and some scotches. I am fine keeping them separate but let's make this more active then.

Bought these Japanese whiskey's and scotches this week. Sorry some bourbon thrown into the second image. Nole0515 the second picture features a glenmorangie signet which is priced between $175 and $200 and it is a delicious highland. If he likes Macallan then this is a better priced alternative, IMO.

I just don’t like scotch at all and know a few of the other regular bourbon drinkers don’t either. I think it would suck for the bourbon thread to turn into a pissing contest between pro and anti scotch guys especially when there is a dedicated scotch thread.

Their appeal seemed to be more around the collector's market than the juice itself. Nothing undrinkable, but you'd be paying a premium for some entry level scotch.

I got a buddy in our annual christmas exchange. He really enjoys Lagavulin and the Talisker Distiller's Edition. Any suggestions on a bottle I could get for him? Preferably not wildly expensive as we try and keep gifts under $50. Can be a smaller bottle if that's an option (though I assume it won't be).

I'd probably go with a ledaig 10 for a full bottle (ardbeg and Laphroaig are also good cheaper choices). A lot of liquor stores carry a variety of these guys, which are a lot of fun to try something new without committing to a full bottle. They don't all come with these bottles
