It's going to be a mess though - I doubt most people have much of a plan until they're able to get back to their home and see what level of disaster they're dealing with.
4 college buddies have houses in the palisades. 3 completely gone. 1 was still standing as of Tuesday night, but last image he saw was house next to him and across the street were fully engulfed.
Vegas sent over 24 firefighters and several firetrucks last night. KTLA said we're at 0% containment as of a couple minutes ago.
Not close to as bad as those that lost their home but power continues to be out and don't think it's coming back anytime soon. Trying to figure out longer term options. Hardest part is figuring out where.
If there is a Southern Calirfornia fire thread, I missed it. got this text from my aunt. Their son (my cousin) lives in Sierra Madre. This photo is from their backyard. they vacated south yesterday. terrible. feel for all you guys! please let the TMB know if anyone needs help down the road.
idk if its some weird offshoot of survivor's guilt but watching this all unfold from 60 miles away where everything is mostly fine while my hometown and neighborhood specifically burns is the weirdest fucking feeling man
I work at an animal hospital in the Pasadena area and the amount of people calling in saying their homes are gone, their records are gone, they need meds, is insane. Got a 90 year old lady here who just made it out with her cat, we're getting a health certificate going so she can go be with family in New York. My best friend was about to close on a house up on Altadena Dr. that's gone now. The stories are endless. Fuck this. 2 of the animal hospitals in Altadena burned down too.
New fire in West Hills / Calabasas. 20 acres and growing fast. Fuckin' hell. Gotta be arson at this point
You were in Encino Man?? Evac orders coming likely for Oak Park / Kanan Rd. If you are in Agoura Hills time to be watching your phone
Worked on it start to finish. West Hills backyard location was where I nearly kicked Pauly Shore's head the morning of the first day of principal photography Might be west of the fire area, but Miles Dyson's house in Terminator 2 is 30068 PCH, very close to where Morning View Drive hits Zuma Beach. Spent a few weeks out there on location around Christmas 1990
Yea just got one for the Runyon fire and it's reduced in size during the day - was wondering wtf could have happened.
got the evacuation alert on our phone about twenty minutes ago. scrambling to pack up our 3 week old baby and eight other people when we get another alert that it was a mistake. It's a relief but God damn that was an intense few minutes for nothing
That was ridiculous . I’m in Manhattan Beach — no way I’d be able to go anywhere if there was a mass evacuation. I’d have a better shot swimming to Catalina.
My older sister (who I don’t speak to or see) house in Altadena burnt down. Weird feeling because while we don’t have a relationship she is my “sister” I share childhood memories with her and had some nice times in that house before we fell out. I don’t want anything bad to happen to her but idk how I should feel or if i should reach out.
Not that important in the grand scheme of things whatsoever but still made me feel good to see this pop up in my inbox just now, especially considering Altadena's clubhouse burned down completely
With the amount spent on military, this seems like something that should they should already have in their toolbelt
For those in the valley west of the 405 Here is an update for Tarzana/Encino families from LAFD for those of you looking at the smoke that’s getting very close now. This is coming from a LILA mom who is a journalist. I wanted to share with you. “Finally just walked up with my press badge as a lot of producer friends at CNN are looking for info and our neighborhood is exhausted from seeing the fire progress toward us with no updates. What we are seeing at the top of Braemar is the controlled burn that Cal Fire decided to let progress north days ago. Winds ARE expected to change this evening toward us, but they have known that for two days now and have been preparing. The Hub is gone and Gizmo peak is gone, but the Mulholland dirt road is their hold line. The report of arson at the top of Braemar is false, it’s just the controlled burn. They have fire retardant lines laid all along the ridge, I was able to see them. They have crews stationed above Braemar, at the top of Greenbrier, at Vanalden Trailhead, above Reseda and along the ridge that I personally saw. They have brush clearing bulldozers, tankers and teams in place, access to all the water tanks along the ridge, and the Encino Resevoir. Air support will start again around 4pm, so we may get a show this evening, but he believes we are safe and he has family in Tarzana that he has told to stay put. We will get alerts if the situation changes, but I really feel like it’s all hands on deck up there and they have it incredibly under control.”
Stay safe Fidelio but since you’re east of the 405 I guess you’re safe. JK just wanted to lighten the mood. Seriously be safe. My son lives in the valley too a little west of the 405. He sent a picture from his balcony and the fire just seemed too close for my liking.
yea man. this Santa Monica mountain area has seen fires almost every year but it’s been pretty controlled thankfully. The homes don’t really start until north of Mulholland/the valley slope but the wind isn’t supposed to go north
So is the palisades fire still going into Malibu/SM mountains? Seems like the city of Santa Monica is safe for the moment? I’m out of the country and not sure what’s happening in the area
Seems like it's gonna get dicey for Encino tonight. Fire has jumped into Mandeville. Amount of evac warnings and notices is not great. Be safe to the TMB Valley crew
aok set up in Westwood and been watching the news. Fire blowing in SW direction and SFV seems ok for now, as they’ve done a good job setting a perimeter at dirt Mulholland. National guard is at Ventura / Hayvenhurst in the north and sunset / Mandeville on the other side. Unfortunately, I think some more homes in mandeville canyon are going to go this weekend edit: national guard is there as a deterrent for looters to a large extent. Encino is more accessible than the mandeville canyon entrance how about you and close ones?
my son is near CSUN and he is okay so far him and my daughter in law both work in Santa Monica and other than work being canceled 1 day they are pretty much normal. Today is the first day that I saw a little more blue than grey (smoke clouds) in the horizon. It gave me a little optimism. How are you doing today? Have you gotten any news any updates on when you’re able to go home?
cool man, glad it’s relatively ok. Nothing new on going home. Took my oldest to ojai for a run and lunch. It’s her happy place. Drove on Ventura blvd on the way back to west LA and it’s blocked off still at Hayvenhurst and surrounding areas. I’m optimistic that we’ll be back Wednesday or Thursday
This is where I might struggle with the idea of a heavily armed neighbor. In general, I think less guns are better and would be concerned by the dude next door and his one man militia. However, in a situation like this it would be reassuring to know that a "motivated" gun aficionado was next door and living out his police dreams while protecting our property. It's an interesting thought experiment brought on by an incredibly difficult natural disaster.
LAUSD is opening back up tomorrow. Seems premature but at least (selfishly on my part) I think my wife and youngest will be safe.
