Finn's origin story bugs the fuck out of me. We know from dialogue that stormtroopers of the First Order are taken as infants and raised to be stormtroopers. You're telling me that after ~18 years of brainwashing and training; 1. This is his first combat action!? You have a really shitty system if you are willing to pull babies away from parents for a life of combat training but you aren't OK with sending kids into combat? 2. FN-2187 sees one dude die and just immediately breaks and can't do what he's been trained to do? I don't care if it's supposedly his friend, that is shitty training and brainwashing. You had 18 years to get this kid ready. Stormtroopers die, it's part of who they are. Yeah, yeah, he was a garbage man on Starkiller. He was still trained as a stormtrooper. They obviously rotate guys in and out of jobs like that because FN-2187 is no longer on Starkiller, he's pulling combat duty on Jakku. Weird situation that bugs me.
1. Perhaps they feel it takes that long to train and brainwash before theyre ready for battle. I doubt they care about throwing kids into battle, but if they've found that they're not effective until then, sure. 2. Perhaps the brainwashing just didnt take with Finn. It never did and the trauma of that first situation was the straw that broke the camel's back. Plus it was a matter of opportunity. What was he going to do about it until he had someone that could get him out of there?
Also, Phasma better do some amazing shit in Ep. 8 to make up for the letdown from Ep 7 The way that character was hyped and then ended up a dud is fucking awful. If Kylo is so prone to outbursts, he should have murdered her after they found out Finn went to her division for reeducation and then still helped Poe, BB-8 and Rey escape.
The way Phasma says this was his first deviation and the way Ren questions the soldiers loyalty makes me think they've had this problem in the past as well.
She orders Finn to her division, but I don't remember any indication that he actually did report/receive reeducation.
I don't know why, but I find it cool that Amin El Hassan is a SW nerd who watches rebels like the rest of us
Got my ticket. Don't get to go until Monday, but get to see it in a Dolby GXL theater, which is amazing.
I think so user Shocker. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high but I think it'll be better than TFA, prob top 3 at worst all time SW film.
Maybe Finn is resistant to brainwashing because he's force sensitive. But I'd put my bet on deviations being more common than they showed in the movie.
The fact that they felt the need that this was his first issue makes me think this sometimes happens. Hell, even a few of the Clones started to resist the brainwashing at the end.
unfortunately, the princess leia and chewbacca comic series don't seem to work on that site. those are the only ones i haven't read
Something I would like to see in Rogue One or future movies is the fanatical loyalty the Stormtroopers have to Darth Vader.
I thought they liked him...? From the canon novel Lords of the Sith: She shook her head, her lekku squirming in agitation. “Not much. Second- and thirdhand stories. I’ve heard that the regular officers hate him, but the Stormtrooper Corps almost worships him.” From the canon novel Tarkin: Later, observing the rapport the Dark Lord shared with the stormtroopers who supported him... Tarkin grew more and more convinced that his suspensions were right. Vader might very well be the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker...
That was much earlier in the timeline and referring to the stormtroopers that were remnants fo the 501st Clones. The 501st clones were fiercely loyal to Anakin. The further we get away from clones and more into stormtroopers, that adoration for Anakin is probably replaced by fear as new troops that didnt serve him during the Clone Wars come under his command
So hard not to click those spoilers. This must have been how Kylo felt trying to decide whether or not to kill his dad.
***** HEADS UP ***** The Rogue One world premiere is tonight and while formal reviews are embargoed, they're allowing social media reactions. My position is to have the social media reactions in spoilers since they're usually not revealing enough to be spoilers but didn't want to take chances with people who are adamant about not seeing any reactions/reviews.
For your consideration https://www.cultofwhatever.com/2016/12/lets-talk-about-blowing-up-the-death-star/
Use the movie thread imo https://www.the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-official-trailer.163167/
please? It's just asking for something to get spoiled imo. I guess I can just tap out of the thread until I see it.
Whitaker is a really bad actor. I saw Arrival and he just completely takes me out of every scene with his obnoxious New York accent and eyeball fuckery
The whole ewok thing completely ruins ROTJ for me. And then Lucas turned right around and did it again in Ep I with Jar Jar
