let me see what facebook is saying. Oh god, facebook is cancer, how do you even navigate this anymore.
Update: apparently downtown cairo got hit pretty bad, took out a water tower, a few businesses etc. No casualties so far.
holy shit, i know that guy in the tweet. I know exactly where that is. I used to work at the drug store there. let me text him.
My parents used to take their van to a Cairo dealership for service. A cousin ran the service department there. I hope he and the dealership are ok.
In Lee County there are reports of buildings moved off of their foundations, trees scrubbed bare of leaves and moderate ground scouring. Would this typically indicate F4?
If you start seeing trees that have been stripped of bark and all limbs and all homes completely flattened or mostly wiped off the foundation, that’s typically EF4 damage. Everything I’ve seen seems to point toward EF3. Still extremely strong and will be interesting to see what the survey says.
Depends heavily on how those homes were attached to the foundations. If they weren't at all, can't rate much higher than ef3.
That town was apparently 8 miles from where my sister lives in auburn. Had it formed just a little bit north this could have been a huge disaster
Beauregard is definitely a rural area, and it didn't actually hit Columbus. It basically skirted all of the more populated areas. North of Columbus/Phenix City, south of Auburn. It went right between mine and my parents' house, which are about 10 miles apart just outside Columbus.
Because they’re searching for bodies and it reads like buzzfeed clickbait. “Woah look how far this billboard flew!” I’m probably over sensitive because my hometown was destroyed by a tornado.
It’s anecdotal to the power of the storm. It enhances the argument for how we should pay attention to weather. It’s the opposite of inappropriate, it’s essential those stories get out.
Agreed. I find it fascinating that a billboard could fly for 20 miles and does a better job of showing the power to me than looking at some flattened houses.
I'll drive right by here Thursday. That's the gas station and bar that had the roof ripped off that were posted earlier up there on the left. I'm interested to see it in person.
I keep seeing the typical "this hit without warning". Such a difficult thing, cause this was pretty well forecast with good lead times on the warnings. Highlights the need to be weather aware/have a plan. Tornado warnings will activate wireless emergency alerts. This event also highlights that despite a good forecast and timely warnings that people still die. I fear my first fatality while on the warning desk. Have had a few significant injuries, but thankfully no deaths. Those were definitely a "oh fuck, I'm not prepared for any deaths"
I was thinking the same. Cleaning a slab like that usually indicates an EF-4 or higher. Maybe I am wrong.
Need to see more of that home. If the debris cleared the slab and it was of good construction with anchor bolts it qualifies as EF-5 damage... unless Tim Marshall is making the call
