I got lucky with my tornado siren alarm last night, there was some half dollar sized hail the fell maybe a mile or two to my northwest but I only had little tiny pieces. When I realized it was the sirens I flipped on the news and the top local met was saying something like “the circulation here is pretty weak so the warning will expire but you can see how it’s trying to organize; I’ll just say I’m glad this isn’t happening in May.” Cool, thanks Travis. Something about waking up to tornado sirens made it tough to get back to sleep
I was sick as hell last night and slept through the storms. Pretty disappointed in myself. It sounded cool :(
From the outside it seems the communication on bust potential (capping, large scale sinking of air) wasn't communicated or wasnt highlighted properly. A quick look at satellite, observations, and a few model soundings clearly showed it was very conditional
I had a feeling it was going to be a bust. Maybe its my history of being a Hog fan that I figured all the excitement would die off quickly. I think the biggest reason of the miscommunication was the selective listening. The forecasters say it could be big hail in addition to the rain and lightning, and people hear hail is on the way. Specifically because we just had some seriously damaging hail a few weeks ago. That factor compounds on the forecast and it becomes a big threat when in reality it was a real possibility instead of a probable result.
i went back to the nfl thread and half of that post was still saved in the reply box of that thread must have had too many tabs open on my phone when i was flipping back and forth from the schedule to tmb
I wasn't upset it didn't get hail, I was hoping to avoid that. I was just saying it got all worked up saying it would be extreme weather, and it was really nothing more than a thunderstorm.
oh not you in particular, but i’ve heard it mentioned several times today already. they talked about it on the ticket this morning about how all the local meteorologists are taking it in the shorts on twitter as if those guys wanted to cause them harm
Tornado touching down in Clinton MS headed to Jackson. I may need to find a little better shelter than the boat I live on.
Someone on that Twitter thread said Harvey was a horrible forecast. I seem to remember seeing the enormous totals before it started and people saying it was too high
Lol. Not me. It’s my sponsors. He’s renting it to me till I get married. Been living on it for 6 months.
I do not envy NWS guys on days like this. By the time you pull the warning trigger the rotation has already spun out and three more spots have popped up along the line
Dropping this here because I love weather history and today some was announced. Hurricane Michael was a Category 5.
I'm sure I've shared this book before, but it's free and pretty great. If anyone's interested (nerds!) and wants a free reference from a reputable source on weather basics, this is good https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/books/Practical_Meteorology/
