Named my kid Rory. Is that odd-ball enough to fit in this thread or nah? If it helps at all his mom’s family is legit Irish—like, half the aunts/uncles/cousins speak w an accent and still live in Ireland, Irish.
We considered naming our son Grayson. I really liked the name until someone politely reminded me that the name origin is “son of the gray haired man.” I started going gray at 21, and I’m way more salt than pepper now. I quickly nixed the name.
The origin of a lot of these names matter. There's a huge difference between naming your kid Hickson because it's his mother's maiden name and naming your kid Hyksyn because you want him to be super unique.
If a couple is that enamored with the Hickson name why doesn’t the mother just keep her name or give the child a hyphenated last name? The last name as a first name trend needs to be halted.
It's not a trend. It's a traditional naming pattern across a number of cultures. And, it's normally the middle name.
Brother has my mom's maiden name as a middle name. I have my dad's middle name also as my middle. Both mine and my brother's first names are from great great uncles or something. Also, biblical.
As the middle name is fine and as you say, relatively normal. But, within the context of western world naming customs, in what cultures are last names as first names traditional?
It's typically the middle name (e.g. English, Irish, German naming, particularly immigrants from there). I guess I missed the "first name" part. But, it's also somewhat normal for people to go by the middle names (or a derivation thereof). The Welsh traditionally always used the father's forename as the son's surname, so most of their names are all surnames.
I wanted to name one of my two youngest Wolfgang (before I found out they were girls) everyone thought I was crazy. I wonder if I’d belong in this thread if I did.
Theres a local guy called David Davies. Here, David is commonly shortened to "Dai", so he's known by everyone as 'Dai twice'.
Had a female patient come through my worksite yesterday whose first and middle names were Charlemagne Augustus. Parents must have been big fans of the Roman Empire.
Naming a child is hard! Choosing between Kacyn and Maveryck is something no parent should have to do.
My oldest has a unique name. It’s spelled very different even though it’s a common name. I sometimes wonder if folks think me and my wife are trying to be hip. Fact is the name was my great grandfathers
In news of the whites, my wife has a high school friend who just named her kid Cash Diesel. kentucky as fuck
tbh could be. I literally deliberated how to spell it in the post because idk and the dumbest reality is usually true.
If your name is Cash Diesel and you’re not packing a python in your pants it’s gonna be a disappointment.
Kolter Apparently some country guy they like has that name but my first reaction in my head was "... like Ann Coulter?"
Taking a name and then spelling it wrong because you like a guy but just have to be different is peak stupid trash. It's after Colter Wall, I assume.
poor kid wasn't going to nail the SAT anyway but still, tfw you can't bubble your name because your name is a bad hangover from an AIM handle
I'm trying to explain to my wife that Bexley feels pretty try hard for a unique name. She loves it as a potential boy name.
