Seems like I am seeing more and more articles about vehicles hitting pedestrians and cyclists, often ending in fatalities. Seems like we have grown numb to the fact that there are so many motor vehicles deaths each year and people killed simply walking. And many of our roads don’t have proper cycling lanes and sidewalks. Pretty fucked up imhv. This seems like a good enough thread for these type of stories / articles. Also, anecdotally, I live by a pretty busy street in my neighborhood. If I look outside for like 3 minutes, I’ll no doubt see someone doing something insane on the road.
Three cars crashed off the road in three separate incidents last week within a half mile radius of where I usually walk. No longer walking my neighborhood.
re the cars blowing the stop sign in the third video where the 5 year old girl was killed in the crosswalk --- that's Maryland drivers for you. There's absolutely no traffic enforcement in DC (traffic cameras that no one bothers to pay), so you can literally do whatever you want. Pretty much the only thing that gives people pause is the thought that they might get their teeth kicked in or their ass shot if they run into someone who can kick ass or has an illegal gun.
There is a ridiculous amount of bad drivers in Denver and many of them are on motorcycles. I feel like I see 2-3 every week and it's only a matter of time until I see something awful.
Right outside where I was is a high pedestrian 4 way stop. The amount of cars that don’t stop or roll through and miss people blows my mind. I have no idea why the city won’t post a squad car there
Cars are getting safer every year. Despite our ridiculous domestic policy of focusing only on easily quantifiable/prosecutable offenses like speed and seatbelts, instead of accident-causing behavior like lane camping, improper passing, etc… it’s never been safer to be on the roads. What’s surprising is that there aren’t more fatalities given the tens-to-hundred millions of 4000 pound guided missiles rocketing down our crowded, crumbling roads at 90mph every day.
When I used to walk 20 minutes to work in Toronto I would experience at least one dangerous interaction per day. Awful drivers. That being said, in many cases you can find fault with drivers, pedestrians, and/or cyclists, but it’s poor urban design that leads to these groups having to interact in unsafe manners.
no shit dude, information flow is instantaneous. You’re seeing more articles because more articles are able to be seen. I’m a fellow cyclist and appreciate awareness. Over my 15 years on the road bike, I’ve seen 5x increase in bike lanes, greenways, smarter traffic systems. Each year I’ve felt more safe on the roads. it’s getting a lot better, saddle up
Now do pedestrian deaths. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.st...7194/pedestrian-fatalities-in-the-us-by-year/
What would’ve mitigated all of this AND helped save the environment at the same time is if the auto and O&G industries didn’t spend billions of dollars over the last 60+ years “lobbying” against public transit
Was just talking to some neighbors the other day. There are 3-4 Dodges and Mustangs that do 65-70 down our narrow streets where kids play. I am trying to get the police to sit in a spot and catch them, but it’s not an affluent neighborhood so they don’t care. We are talking about putting in our own speed bumps.
I’ve biked 2900 miles this year so far, much within Minneapolis city limits. I mostly stick to paths but when I’m on the street it’s easy to find a bike lane or neighborhood streets dubbed “bike blvds“ that have more cycling infrastructure. Anecdotally, I also recently had a first. Someone cut right in front of me to turn right. I hollered something like “thanks man, glad you for to that turn so quick” as we entered the intersection at the same time. Kept riding and he turned around snd caught up to me and apologized. When I saw him I thought it was a confrontation but I got the opposite.
Unfortunately we do allow Wisconsinites in Minnesota still, though. Just read that this one is dead now after doing this last night.
I kinda want this to be 3 separate incidents, but holy fuck that would be insane if it was. Would mean that many people are just speeding down that street and have no idea what is coming up
I’ve noticed people blowing through stop signs more frequently just anecdotally. And people blowing past me on a two lane road. Literally going around me into oncoming traffic to speed around me in a neighborhood.
I feel like that was an episode of home improvement or some shit where Tim installs a couple speed bumps and then is forced to get rid of them
Well I’ll be damned… Vestil SBRY-72-C Black Heavy Duty Speed Bump, Concrete, 72" Length, 11.75" Width
That has to be highly illegal. There is a creek crossing on my road, naturally the road is downhill on both sides. It’s amazing the speeds that cars accelerate to both approaching and exiting that crossing.
That’s my only issue. I just assume one of these cars hits one and goes barreling into a house and then their shitty driving is my fault.
While some of it is just terrible drivers, I’d say the vast majority of accidents now are because people are in their phones and not paying attention.
I live on a one way street with a similar problem (cars doing 75 down our narrow af street with kids and dogs everywhere). City has told us numerous times that they can't put in speed bumps because of emergency vehicles (doesn't explain why they can't put in speed bumps in the alleyway -- where cars also do 70 mph)
Two times in the last month, I've been first in line sitting at a red light at an intersection, and when my light turns green the cross-street cars just keep continuing through the intersection at their normal pace for 5-10 seconds. Not speeding up or slowing down, just...normal. Seems like society is on the precipice of total anarchy in those moments.
Incidentally, I enjoy nothing more than coming to a complete and total stop at stop signs (and also not jackrabbiting it after the stop) and then watching the person behind me having an aggro melty because they had to actually stop their car.
Throw a basketball or mannequin or something out in the street when they drive by. Or shoot the cars with paint balls
Additionally, cars are increasingly and incredibly effective at protecting passengers. The incentive structure has been decreased to focus on the task at hand.
I know I’ve gotten old because i wanna fuck people up that drive fast in neighborhoods. There are god damn kids out here. Nothing makes me angrier
wait. what? coming to a complete stop is a dick move? so if I roll the intersection and hit someone out for a run because I didn't see them, what then?
H-Town checking in. Just flipping your car in rush hour and bouncing. That exist is stupid because people try and ride it down in exit lane/shoulder then whip back onto the interstate. The reporter mentions how they are seeing a huge increase in reckless driving accidents. That’s a ton of local news here now. https://www.khou.com/mobile/article...ideo/285-0a8dc31b-bd08-4185-a449-16e24968b397
Cyclists shouldn't be allowed on/near busy roads. It's dumb that we ban skateboards from even sidewalks but we allow people on bikes to be on roads with cars. My neighborhood caters to them and one gets clipped every couple months.
Agree. Our community has huge cart paths for them but you still see people in the roads. And people let their young kids, like 8 yrs old, take then out to go to Publix and shit like that. A 10 yr old shouldn't be crossing a super busy roundabout in a golf cart but I see it almost daily.
has less to do with cars themselves and more to do with poor urban design mixing pedestrians and vehicles nearby each other and cities tendencies to design city streets like six lane highways where people go 20 over the speed limit, not to mention lack of any coherent public transport options in most American cities
There’s no way I’d ride a bike in a bike lane around Houston. Fuck that. You’d get hit because just because someone is hungry and they’ll pass you on a sidewalk here.
Cities should do better jobs making spaces for cyclists and encouraging cycling commutes where feasible. … Dudes that bike down major thoroughfares at regular commute times should be tarred and feathered.
I disagree completely. Why should our streets be the domain solely of motor vehicles? If a cyclist is “clipped” it’s an indictment on motorists and they shouldn’t be gifted sole use of the roads as a result.
